All about Henry

Hello. I went to see Henry today, and of course my friend Helen was there as well. Henry is nine now, I have known him since he was a puppy, he used to come and stay at my house, and I stayed at his house when Helen went on holiday. I have walked him in his own village, and around here.
He has been a bit poorly just lately, the boy has suffered with arthritis for a long time, and has been on medication to control the pain. The tablets which have given him a good quality of life are no longer available, they have stopped making them. The vet prescribed some other tablets but they didn't work the same. Luckily the vet has been able to source some more, but when they run out there may not be a plan B. So now all Helen and Paul can do is enjoy him while he is still here. I have never met such devoted dog lovers as they are. Henry has wanted for nothing.
It was pouring with rain today but we still went a walk.
He still loves his little bimble, sniffing all the other doggy smells.

I've dug a few old photos out from the archives. Friends having fun in my garden.

A flower pot makes a good chewing toy.

Relaxing on the sofa, just chillin.

Tie them to the bench so I can take a photo.

That look, ha ha. It says, this is my house, this is where I live, and I am King.

Walk from a couple of years ago, with his best friends Guinness and Angus. Helen pack leader has the doggy treats in her pocket.

Henry is a character, lets not cry just yet, he's still here.

Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

  3. Just a thought - I follow and help out with raffles, etc, East Midlands Labrador Rescue on f/book. Someone on there was also trying to source some tablets for one of their labs with arthritis - might be worth Henry's mum having a look. They're based in Nottingham and are fab!

  5. Handsome Henry, dogs are so special, we have two.My son gave me a wall plaque. it says "Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole " and that is so true, but that also goes for cats, bunnies or any animal that share our homes, Chrissie.

  8. My dog is older (13) and suffers from arthritis. My vet put him on carprofen. It is the doggie equivalent of ibuprofen. He seems to be doing well and it is not expensive. Maybe Helen could ask her vet about carprofen. Hope it works!

  9. Our 11 year old Golden retriever is on Metacam from the vet, but we also supplement it with YuMove tablets which the vet says are fine to use together. We found that after 10 days on the YuMove he suddenly got a spring in his step, and seemed to be asking to go out to sunbathe in the garden more often. A previous dog was on cartrophen injections every three months and I'm wondering if that's the same thing you mention Cate? We found that very effective too.

  13. Hi Ilona, looks like you are getting lots of ideas for tablets and other ideas. I live in the US but can check to see if the tablets are for sale here. I have no idea if it would be okay to mail them to your friend Helen, but I am happy to look if you would like me too.

  14. Love the pictures! Especially the blast from the past, with the Westie in it (I am partial to Westies--now have two). But I am partial to Labs, too, and have several mixes. Here is hoping for more good living for the boy and his people!

  15. Some dogs seem to get arthritis relief from turmeric, made up into Golden Paste. Check out the U.K. Turmeric Users Group on Facebook.
    Hop this helps. xxx Mo

  16. Henry looks lovely...a beautiful face. We have a
Labrador cross hes 12 years and 8 months...every day counts...when your a dog! Hes on Rhymadyl I know they dont suit all dogs but they seem to work and work better if taken just before and not with his food. Not cheap at around £1.70 per tablet, thankfully hes insured. His top dose is two a day because they are not good for the stomach and are like an ibroprofen. I do hope Henry can get some help, sometimes it pays to get a second opinion could make all the difference. Love and hugs to Henry. Rae x

  17. Hi Helen here, Henry's mum. Thank you for all of the suggestions. I shall mention the other medications to my vet. The tablet that is not made any more is PLT and other pet owners are in the same situation as us, it's a wonder drug and nothing else seems to come close. We tried Previcox and within 3 days Henry had gone down hill. We give him Turmeric, YuMove, he has a magnet collar and we take him for doggie physiotherapy every month too. We will try anything to keep him happy and pain free.
