A disappointing post to have to write…
Over the last 12 months, we have occasionally had milk go missing from our early-morning nursery deliveries.
After reviewing our CCTV, we identified an individual regularly visiting at around 4am and taking milk. Initially, this was just one 4-pint bottle. We made the conscious decision to let it go — our thinking was that if somebody was taking a bottle of milk in the middle of the night, perhaps they were struggling and needed it more than we did.
Unfortunately, over time, one bottle became four, then six, and it reached the point where we needed to take action. We therefore installed a secure wooden lock box with a coded padlock for our supplier to leave our deliveries in.
This morning, our regular visitor took things a step further.
The lock box was broken into and eight 4-pint bottles of milk were taken.
While the monetary value of the milk itself isn't huge, that's really not the point. This milk is purchased for the children attending our nursery. When it is taken, we have to find replacements before breakfast and throughout the day. We now also have a damaged secure box that needs repairing or replacing.
Oh my!!!! Wonder why they started so simple then started taking larger amounts and breaking the security box?? Do you think they have found some sort of market for the money?? Strange the way it has escalated. And the poor children and workers at the daycare having to find more milk to get through the day. Something shocking everyday.
ReplyDeleteIt's only a couple of quid for 4 pints, so the guy must be very poor and have lots of kids,.., it's for his family you can only assume,... poor fella. Isla, Sidmouth.
ReplyDeleteHow dreadful, unbelievable. They must know the milk is for a nursery. As the theft has been going on for sometime now and escalated to damage I think the police should become involved.
ReplyDeleteWhen my brother was opening a shop in St Ives in Cornwall 20+ years ago, other shopkeepers came to warn him that some people will steal anything. Literally anything that isn’t nailed down. They were right. Bizarre examples included air freshener from the loos, a cheap rubber wedge for keeping a door open, and one of a pair of potted bay trees that flanked the entrance. Who would be a shopkeeper now? The rent / rates / energy bills / staff costs / rampant theft / lack of police back-up / being undercut by online suppliers. Heather
