Goodbye Freddie

I'm just going to do this post quickly because I am crying buckets. I took Freddie to the vet today because he had stopped eating and was very lethargic. He had his Christmas chicken dinner on Friday and Saturday, but then he didn't eat much more after that. The vet said he had a big lump in his stomach, he took a sample of fluid from him, the vet said it doesn't look good. He started to tell me about what could be done, xray, scan, then cutting him open. It seemed such a lot to put a cat through, with no guarantee that the outcome would give him a good quality of life. He mentioned the words cancer and tumour and I realised what we had to do. I held Freddie while he went to sleep.

My poor little Freddie, he turned up on my doorstep as a stray in a terrible mess, about seven years ago. A fiesty little fella, he ruled the roost and had us all trembling in our boots. Goodbye my little friend, sleep tight.

  1. So sorry to hear about Freddie Ilona. That's really sad. It must have been so hard for you but you did the right thing. At least he won't suffer now.

  2. I am so sorry to hear this. He would say "Thanks Mum, for a lovely life for the last 7 years". I cried buckets too when my old boy went a couple of years ago (old age at nearly 17) it's natural thing to do, but we know we do the right thing when we let them go. You're no mean queen, really, you're a lovely, kind hearted lady with her head screwed on right. Best wishes

  4. I do know exactly how you feel and about crying buckets. I did the same when I had to have my baby Castor put to sleep because his kidneys quit. You are in my prayers and our babies are probably playing together beneath God's throne...unless they are in his lap.

  5. Nite, nite and God Belss, Freddie - you did the right thing, Ilona. Our beloved Tiggy-tiger also had cancer earlier this year, and we had to let him go. I also held him while he went. It helps knowing I was the very last thing he ever saw.

You took him in, gave him a loving home and a wonderful life right to the end - which is so much more than he appeared to have had until your lives touched each other.

Hope you enjoy your lovely memories of his happier days.

    love Ollie xxx

  6. Oh Ilona. I'm so sorry you've lost a friend. But, better this way... I can't think of a nicer way to leave this world - recently stuffed with special treats, my loved one stroking me to sleep... Oh, no, off to cry buckets myself! Hugs. Den (A Full Monte Life)

  8. I am so sorry about Freddie, we still miss Jock our beloved cat before Dave, in fact we were talking about him this morning, and that's a good thing to do, we always talk about our beloved cats that have gone I'm sure to a cat heaven, so Freddie will be with friends.

  11. So sorry to hear this Ilona. Rest assured you have done the right thing. I know if it was one of my cats I would make the same decision as you. I totally agree with you when you say there is no point in putting him through all that with no guarantee at the end of it. I know it doesn't help you feeling the sadness you do at the moment though. How lucky he was to find you all those years ago and settle into your home. He must have had a great life being spoiled by you. How these cute creatures worm their way into your heart and change your life, mine have done that to me too. Take care, thinking of you.

  12. So sorry to read this, so sad for you :(

We lost one of dogs, Lottie, this year to cancer, such a horrid disease and I agree with the above posters - you made the right decision for Freddie, I am sure.

    Thinking of you.

  15. As you know, I am sharing your grief at the moment. It is so very hard even when you know you did the right thing. Freddie looks so like my little Bella too... and she had a lump in her abdomen as well... sadly it must be very common. Blessings to you. x

  16. We lost our lovely Dennis last summer; suddenly after his only seeming a bit 'off' for a few days we found him quite cold in his bed. He's now resting in the orchard but even 6 months later we still hear him scratch at the back door to come in. Time will heal your sadness Ilona, but you'll always have the memories.

  17. Sorry to hear about Freddie, he looked a lovely, friendly cat. Pets are there for you, no matter what, and it's heartbreaking when they pass away. We had a white cat when I was little, he used to lie in at the fireplace, and he had a permanent singe mark on his side. The fire would be roaring and he'd be lying there, had a really loud purr too. He passed away with cancer too, went downhill very quickly. He was very old, but he was a lovely cat, and was sorely missed, as I'm sure Freddie is. RIP Freddie. x
