Village people

It's very hot again here today, I've just got the hosepipe out to water the veg. I was going to carry on using the watering can and keep walking up and down, but it was taking ages, and they weren't getting enough water.

My neighbour is being a pain in the bum at the moment, he is 23 going on 6, definately lacking in the marbles department. Nobody needs to have a bonfire these days, there are plenty of options to dispose of rubbish at one of the local council dumps, and we have a very good wheelie bin collection service, but no, he has to burn it in his garden. He gets his mates to come round and they sit round it drinking beer, how pathetic. He got rid of the old wood after he had some building work done, then he got some of his mates to hack a hedge down and threw that on the fire. Last night I looked out of the window to see his front garden covered in Leylandi branches and he was using them to stoke the fire up. When I asked where they had come from he said his dads house. If he keeps this up I will have to ring the council.

There are posters all over our village at the moment asking people to look out for a lost cat, one has escaped from the kennels/cattery down the hill. The family has been back several times to look for it and I feel ever so sorry for them. The little girl brings cat food with her and scatters it on the ground. If a cattery lost my cat I would be sueing them.

They put a leaflet through my door because someone told them I am involved in cat rescue, I chatted to them saying I would look for the cat. Anyway, this morning I was in the woods with Lady dog and spotted a cat in the bushes peeping at me. It looked very much like the missing cat, but then it ran off. I rang the phone number on the poster as I had it in my bag, and the man said they would be there in an hour, they live eight miles away.

I carried on looking for it till they arrived, then they went through the woods calling it's name. The trouble was every man and his dog was around by then, it is a popular dog walking area. There were big dogs running loose, no cat is going to stick around. I am going to look again, later on, and earlier in the morning when no one is around. The people are going to get a cat trap, and I think we might be able to borrow one as well. It's terrible not knowing what has happened to your pet.

I had a nice afternoon. My friend Julie and her dog Jessica blind dog, picked me and Lady up, in her car and we went to Normanby Park. There is a deer park there with a lake in the middle. The dogs loved to jump in the water to cool off. We sat outside the cafeteria and had an ice cream, and the peacocks were making a heck of a racket with their screeching. The little steam train was running for the children to have a ride on. It was a lovely afternoon.

Now I am going round to another friends house to water the plants in her greenhouse, they have gone away for a week. That's what it's like here, people are so friendly and help each other out. Anything you want doing just ask. It's a lovely place to live, apart from my daft neighbour, maybe he will grow out of it, ha ha.

  1. We are not allowed to burn garden waste or leaves - it is polluting - also dangerous in dry weather. Call the council !

  2. I live in a neighbourhood like yours, and feel really fortunate. We don't live in each others pockets but we all know that no matter what the time there is always someone to help out in an emergency. We all take care of each others homes/pets/gardens whilst on holiday.
Hope you are able to get your neighbour 'sorted out' soon.

  4. Unfortunately it is like that where I live, a little bit of sunshine and they like to start a fire. Normally just as I have finished pegging washing on the line, it is so annoying.

  5. It's nice to have such lovely neighbours and to have a support network like you have. It must be quite a comfort when you go away on your trips knowing that everyone looks out for each other and your home/garden/pets are taken care of. Pity about your silly neighbour, but then there's always one isn't there?! If I were you I'd be directing your hosepipe in the direction of his bonfire, him and his beer drinking buddies. ;-) I hope you find the little cat that has gone missing, poor thing. I'd be fizzing mad at the Cattery who was paid to take care of my pet. They are quick to take your cash, not so quick to follow through on the care and attention taking care of your beloved pet. Huh!! Perhaps some catnip might calm it enough to come to you if you see it around.

I had ice cream in the park the other day too. The weather was absolutely glorious on Friday and it was far too hot to sit in at the local pool whilst my son had his swimming lesson so I went to the park and treated myself to an ice cream, was lovely. Caught some sun too, don't get much up here in the North of Scotland. ;-)

    Cheers, Christy x

  6. Every Thursday is "gas out the neighbours day" as the people next door have a gardener and he insists on having a burn-up nearly every week.
I have suggested he piles it up and they can burn it at dusk, but it falls on deaf ears.

  7. Info I came across re bonfires and steps you can take. If the smoke drifts across roads you can call the police as it endangers traffic and they would be fined. See this link. http://www.environmental-protection.org.uk/neighbourhood-nuisance/garden-bonfires/

  8. The Environment Agency hotline is 0800807060

Don't sit and suffer, log the nuisance and call them!

  9. Call the council and explain the drinking going on and that you are afraid they are going to let it get out of hand. You should not have to wait to hope it gets better. Does he own the house? If he is a renter, call his landlord.

  11. I don't know what it is with blokes and bonfires - we have a free rubbish collection service but my neighbour (in his mid 30's with 3 children!) loves the odd fire in his garden. One time he even burnt a 3 piece suite. I dread to think of all the chemicals we breathed in and which also leeched into the soil.

  12. I'm used to the smell of smoke. We live in a grain growing area and the 'stubble' has to be burnt down every year. Sad about neighbour problems though. It spoils the peace we so crave. Makes me grateful I live in the country with only one near neighbour, and she lives alone.
I lost one of my cats years ago. He just literally disappeared one night. I called him every night for more than a month and he never came home. It broke my heart and I still wonder where he went. Maa

  13. Oh, I hope the cat can be found. I would sue the pants off the cattery (and expect a huge chunk for mental distress).

  14. i do hope the little Cat is found,i would be so distraught if i left my cat at a Cat Kennel, thinking it's safe,i would sue them !! and here in Adelaide it is against council law to burn any rubbish,we would be given a hefty fine.

  15. I think there are by-laws against garden fires between specified hour of the day Ilona - you could call your local authority and find out. I must hold my hands up tho and admit that I too very occasionally have large garden fires when I've had to chop down bits of hedging or remove large branches - it's physically impossible to get them into wheelie bins. Mind, I have no close neighbours and always choose days when the wind blows away from the hamlet.

I too hope that cat is found soon, it's horrid when they go awol.

  16. I have been looking after my son's three cats whilst they were on holiday going in every couple of days (we leave lots of dried food and water down), watering his plants etc. One of the cats never put in an appearance but the food was all going. Very relieved was I when they came home and all cats present and correct. Apparently Sally (a boy) does tend to go off a lot during the day.

I hope you find the missing moggie soon, poor little thing.

  17. Well, maybe with a bit of luck, he'll burn his house down and then have to move ;) (NO! I didn't really say that did I?) Hope your friends find their little cat - I feel for them

Thank you for your advice about bonfires, the phone call has been made.
