Two bridges at Menai

Hello. Onward I went, from Caernarfon to the Menai Bridge and over to Anglesey. Once over the water I parked in a layby on the A5 half way between the two bridges. This is the Suspension Bridge.
And this is the Britannia Bridge.

It was free parking in the layby so I abandoned the car and went for a walk. I followed the coastal footpath which was very well signposted. This is Church Island, it juts out into the water, and has a very ancient small church on it surrounded by gravestones on the steep slopes.

It was very peaceful, hardly anyone there. It has a tarmac path where you can walk across to it.

The little church is very simple and basic, nothing elaborate.

The monument at the top.

There is a massive old tree at the entrance to it, with this plaque attached to the wall below it.

Leaving the island the path goes underneath the Suspension Bridge.

I went up on top and walked across it and back again.

This is the view looking down on Menai town.

I walked further along the coastal footpath and took another route back to the car. I was on my way to Holyhead and decided to take the long route round because I had plenty of time.

Beaumaris looked like a nice place so I parked up and had a look around. It was a beautiful sunny day, very enjoyable to walk along the promenade, have a look at the castle, and watch the world go by.

I followed the A5025 around the whole island and came to Holyhead. I came across a Travel Lodge and went in to ask for a room. Unfortunately they were full, but the nice lady at reception rang up another hotel to ask for me. They had a room so she gave me directions to find it. I was dead chuffed when I saw it, right opposite the Marina, and just where I wanted to be to begin a walk the next day. Couldn't be better. Great view.

Nice hotel, but this is where the Wifi connection was hit and miss, so I had to give up and watch telly instead. I'll show you where I walked, tomorrow.

Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

  5. Well Ilona, I lived on Anglesey for 7 and a half years in Holyhead. The castle at Beaumaris was originally right by the sea!! The hotel you stayed at opposite the marina probably wasn't there when we lived there but our house was on a road off the promenade about 400 yards from the beach. It is 21 years since we moved to Norfolk but we are going to Snowdon next year on holiday with my daughter and her family so we will be doing all the tourist things we couldn't afford to do while living there. The house we are renting sleeps 12 people so if you wanted to go back next year you could stay with us for a couple of days.

  6. What a coincidence Ilona,as myself and my hubby was over on Anglesey yesterday(Sunday)as we went to South Stack on Holy Island to see the Puffins and Choughs that breed there. We then drove all around the outside of the island and then stopped at the same lay-by as you at teatime but didn't go for the same walk as you did as I am recovering from major foot surgery so many thanks for the photos of Beaumaris and Church Island as I don't know when we will be next up that way.We are staying at the moment outside Porthmadog and I went round Portmerion over forty years ago with my ex so nice to see your photos of it on your previous post.It is so nice to read your blog every day and it is one of the first I look at every day and it cheers me up no end when I am feeling down...Wendyx

    1. Thanks. I take loads and whittle them down to pick the best out. It's a small point and shoot camera, I don't understand anything more complicated.

  8. I agree. You take some great pics. You really get around town and see a lot of different places. Does it make you want to move house or are you happy where you are at Tightwad Towers?

    1. I am ok where I am, though it is a bit flat on this side of the country. Would like to be near a few hills. Housing is relatively cheap here and my house is costing very little to run. I am not going to take out a mortgage at my age to move somewhere else.

  9. Walking on a suspense bridge is quite a thing. I did it some two months ago (wrote about it in my blog); I won't repeat the experience, unless I really have to.
