Hello. It's miserable outside, hasn't stopped raining yet, but no matter, I had an enjoyable morning at the 20 21 Visual Arts Centre, viewing a new exhibition. The artist, Naseem Darbey was in attendance and gave a very interesting talk about her work. I do like to get the background to any art that appeals to me, it adds so much more to the exhibition, and Naseem explained how it all came about from the initial idea to the finish.
The exhibition is called We are Saved by Loss. Naseem was diagnosed with cancer, and had a desire to investigate and understand what was happening to her own body. Her textile based hollow drawing sculptures explore disease through breast cancer.
Naseem uses a sewing machine as her drawing implement, she draws freehand, constantly moving the needle over her base medium of pliable water soluble glue. Each of the exhibits were placed on a black pedestal, in a darkened room, to create maximum effect of the lighting underneath them. The delicate nature of her stitching added a fragile dimension to the colour.

Wish I was up in your neck of the woods, I would enrol for that machine embroidery workshop like a shot. I shall look forward to seeing what you turn out when you start. The photos are amazing.

ReplyDeleteHi Ilona, you are going to enjoy freestyle embroidery, I just love it, I can lose hours doing it and you can do wonderful things with it, I once saw a bag that had a panel in the front, a black tree with bare branches was sewn onto the soluble plastic, then a background of every shade of red, yellow and orange was was painted on a piece of fabric, the tree was then sewn on top giving the impression of a raging forest fire behind the blackened tree, I have never forgotten it, it was absolutely stunning, I'm sure your wonderful teacher will tell you that you can use finger stalls on the end of your fingers to guide the fabric more easily.

ReplyDeleteStunning work Ilona. Like you Ilona I will have a go at anything you never know what you can do until you try. When I was training to be a national WI craft judge I had to learn about lots of different craft - for how can you judge if you don't know what you are judging, it was lots of fun I saw some really beautiful work.. Good luck with the workshop I know you will enjoy it.
