I went to have a look at a Vintage Fair on Saturday at the Ropewalk at Barton. It's the first time they have had one. It was very good so I expect they will repeat it next year. This jolly one man band was strutting his stuff, adding to the atmosphere.
The Ropewalk is 3/4 of a mile long. As the name suggests, they used to make rope there, part of it is a museum. There are art galleries, a gift shop, a very busy cafe, and a row of artists studios which are open over two weekends in September.
I browsed the exhibitions, and was shocked to see how much some of the paintings were. I will never understand how the artists price up their work. Smallish picture, on corrugated cardboard, in a wooden box.
Erm, do you think it's not quite finished!
Pluck a random number out of the air.
Two smaller pieces of cardboard, cut up random shapes of tissue paper and stick them on.
Doesn't matter if the cardboard isn't covered and the glue looks messy.
A snip, I'll take it, ha ha.
What a crazy world we live in. I reckon this kind of art could take off. It could be a nice little earner to make a bit on the side, especially for those without a job. Minimum basic materials required, no particular skills needed. Slap it on, stick it on, easy to knock a few out in ten minutes. Might try some for my next exhibition. ilona
Have you ever been to the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield? Sometimes the best view is out of the window.
ReplyDeleteLooks like they were done by a child. I think even with my limited painting skills I could do better.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that as soon as I saw the tissue paper one it did suggest sailing ships to me. Amazing, and not just the prices, I see what you mean. Wasn't there once a painting that was admired and interpreted by experts, until they found out that it was done by a chimpanzee? Strange what passes for "art" these days, but then they probably said that about Picasso. Each to his own.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is in London, you might get people that buy this sort of stuff!,But here in the Midlands,we think...well our 2 year old grandson could have done better, lol.Sometimes, things classed as Vintage Fairs, think that the public will pay the stupid prices that they are asking for things. The people who organize these things charge stupid money, for people to stand and try to sell their stuff. So the only people making any money are the organizers!!We used to have yearly Vintage Fairs in Leicester,£2 to go in a lovely old hotel or they used Leicester Cathedral before that. But although it was an afternoon out,for £2,I noticed not many people were buying anything!Which they are not going to,when there are at least 12 charity shops nearby, that sell the same sort of things for about £4.!Some stalls were charging £45 for a Vintage jumper!..or £65 for an old picture!.I felt a bit sorry for the people who were try to sell, when we saw them loading their stuff up,unsold. But the organizers, must sit there, counting their money. This is why, people try n charge alot to cover what they have been charged to stand...Going off thread, again lol....the fireworks around where I live are in full force again tonight...me and my cats are sick of it.xx
ReplyDeleteI've been missing a trick. I could make a fortune from the pictures Lily brings home from school.
ReplyDeleteWas it the Emperor's New Clothes exhibition Ilona? I love a Vintage fair.
ReplyDeleteI think the top one is upside down. It looks like a tree.
ReplyDeletePricing is difficult. There is a theorem somewhere, but these take the biscuit! The most I asked for a painting was £140. It was big, the frame cost nearly that. But I sold it. It was also a recognisable horse.
ReplyDeleteNot as good as your art work Ilona.
ReplyDeletegot to say, I much agree with you re those "art" (and I use the term loosely), prices. Obscene. On the other hand, perchance someone thinks it great and pays it, who am I to argue. Indeed, if I could benefit like that, I would do so with a straight face. Grin
ReplyDeleteSomeone may like it I suppose Ilona but not my cup of tea. There again I did like Tracey Emmins bed"art"piece as mine is similar Im afraid.Debi my darling dogs are terrified of the fireworks too and the are toileting upstairs x
ReplyDeleteIf thats art, I'm a..........
ReplyDeleteIt looks like there was a great atmosphere at the fair but those prices...eek....your art is so much nicer, Ilona, I do prefer recognizable images too. The fireworks were still going off here last night too. It's about time they were restricted to organized events only. The poor animals hate it all.
ReplyDelete.
I'd need more money than sense to buy that tat passing itself off as art.
ReplyDeleteMy jaw is on the floor with those prices for those pictures . . . that is incredible, and not in a good way :)
