Walking in the Yorkshire Wolds with Vicki

The weather didn't look too promising when I set off at 9am this morning to go to Market Weighton and meet up with Vicki, one of our Walking Group members. I couldn't see the Humber Bridge for the fog, until I got close to it. As I was going over it I couldn't see the water below.
We met as planned and set off for a walk, Vicki leading the way, she had the map. We took the Yorkshire Wolds Way, an old railway track, out of the town, which is a regular route for dog walkers,
Eventually the fog lifted and in the afternoon it became quite bright. Two walkers going the other way.
Walking through a farmyard we came across this lovely tractor, well I thought it was lovely anyway. The farmer came walking by so I quizzed him about it. I would love to have a drive of it, but had to make do with a photo session.

The Wolds around here are lovely, gentle rolling hills, not too strenuous. This is the church at Sancton, it has a very unusual octagonal tower. We tried the door to take a look inside, but sadly it was locked.

We crossed the main road at Sancton and went down a tarmac road past Houghton Hall. I rather liked the look of this tree with all it's lower branches gone. By now the weather had greatly improved and we were walking in brilliant sunshine.
We came back into Market Weighton and I couldn't resist taking this picture of Granville's general store. It reminds me of David Jason and his character Granville from the TV comedy, Open All Hours.

We finished at about 3.30pm. A lovely walk, and a catch up chat, in fact we never stopped talking. We plan to do it again sometime, maybe in the summer. Nine miles today to add to the total.

  2. We don't have walkways here going through farmland like you have (I would love it if we did), and certainly not passing through farmyards. My brother-in-law would have a fit if he found someone walking through his farm or anywhere near his machinery.
Granville's reminded me of Open All Hours as well - one of my favourite comedies of all time.

    1. We can't just walk through any old farmyard when we feel like it, would get chased away by an irate farmer. But we can walk through if there is a legal footpath, as marked on the OS map. Some farmers can get a bit miffed, occasionally someone will have tried to block the way by not maintaining a stile over a fence, or not cutting back the undergrowth making it difficult to get through the brambles. If a path goes through the middle of a field the farmer has to mark it with sticks if he has ploughed it, or run a vehicle over it to flatten the earth. Some can't be bothered to do that. When planting crops they have to leave the path clear. I have walked through fields of Rape where it is shoulder high and I have come out the other end covered in yellow dust.

    1. There are quite a lot of independent shops in Market Weighton. You don't get many hardware shops like that any more.

    1. It rained overnight here, but dry now. I went to bed early last night, which meant I was up early this morning. After a coffee I was out of the house just after 6.30am, and did my 3 mile walk. It was lovely, clean fresh air and birds twittering. Now doing something arty.

  7. What a spectacular day! Looking forward to getting back to England to walk on those wonderful footpaths. We've walked in the Lake District and have 30 miles left to complete the Cotswold Way. Doing an 8 day walk in Alsace this year so hopefully next year. I envy you that path system. We have a lot of hiking where I live, but it's covered with snow now and too hot in the middle of summer, not to mention my dislike of rattlesnakes.

  8. Could the tree be an Italian Stone Pine?

    1. Not sure, it was some kind of pine. There were several more not far away in a wood. All had lost their lower branches.

  9. That looks a great day all round Ilona and especially sharing it with Vicki. It was lovely walking with my dogs today in the sunshine but I fell over in the slippy mud-luckily not hurt though.Yesterday my lovely lily ran off as I took my attention off of her whilst walking and chatting to another dog walker-happily just as I was about to report it to the ranger someone returned her with their dogs lead attached x

  10. Good morning Ilona made my day with the photos again. We have a small cluttered hardware store in our village. It has been owned by the same family for generations but this will probably end when these retire as there is a big box hardware about 20 mins away and their children were very clever at school and ended upas scientists etc. It will be sad and take The quirkiness out of our street!
