What do you fancy eating today.

Over the years I have been going on about being flexible with my eating, buying cheap, buying whatever there is with a yellow sticker. I never make a shopping list, I decide when I get there what I need or want to buy. I don't look for yellow stickers now because I want my shopping trips to be simple. Go to one supermarket, quickly in and quickly out. No browsing, grab and go.

I am happy to be able to buy decent food. I am still flexible with what I eat, only two rules, no meat, no fish, and limited pre prepared food. I will try different things to add variety to my diet.

In the coming months and into next year, there is a chance that our choices will be limited. With the uncertainty of what Brexit brings, and the food shortages across the world due to extreme weather conditions, we have to be prepared more than ever to modify our eating habits.

Already containers are stacking up at the borders, lorries are in massive queues on both sides, because new permits and paperwork will have to be issued.

On top of this there is the threat of food shortages through cyber attacks. Ice Age Farmer has predicted that there will be empty shelves because the supply of food will be severely disrupted. The drought in Brazil has pushed up the price of soya bean, steering China to buy up all available stocks. Soya is in almost everything. You can read about this on Ice Age Farmer's web site. Check out his Crop Loss map of the world.
We will all need to re evaluate what we eat, maybe make changes to our eating habits according to what is available. Buy substitutes when our usual products have disappeared from the shelves.

Now would be a good time to consider growing our own. I did it a few years ago when money was really tight, maybe I should start again, and wage war with those pesky slugs which invade my garden in the spring and summer.
I don't think there is any need to panic buy, I won't, because I don't panic about anything. What will be will be. As long as I have something to eat, I'll be ok.
Got to take Billy for a walk. Thanks for popping in. Catch up soon. Toodle pip.   ilona

  1. I think one of the easiest ways for government to control us even more than they already do is through food shortages. Frightening! Everything in our lives circle back to government control. I don't totally understand Brexit but I pray that it doesn't upset your ability to get the necessities of life. Growing our own food is a possibility for some but not all. I, too, would be in a daily battle with slugs and also, deer. Not sure i have it in me. In order to greatly limit my grocery shopping, I buy frozen foods. I'm not a big meat eater so I don't need fresh meats . Love the choices of frozen veggies. Take care!

  2. We still get what we can of the stickered goods..means we can afford more of the really good stuff, reduced or not.
The grass on our back garden is fast disappearing under fruit and vege beds..our landlord is happy so long as the grass in the front is ok!

    1. Sounds a bit like The Good Life. I remember them getting a rotavator and churning up the back garden.

  3. Can I recommend sprouting your own seeds? Highly nutritious and would fit in really well with your way of eating? And no slugs.

    1. I used to buy sprouting beans from the chiller cabinet at Tesco, very tasty they are too.

  4. Supermarkets have been stockpiling goods for almost a year and if everyone shops sensibly we will be ok. The only immediate shortages will be fresh goods, but I would imagine they'll be fast tracked at the border. If people panic buy there will be shortages and the price will rise, it's the law of economics.

  5. Just because I have to empty my freezer and eat down the cupboards before moving - typical!

  6. Like you Sue, we have to empty our freezers (can see me giving lots to friends). Keeping the storecupboard well stocked though to see us through our move and into the Brexit year.

Ilona - sheep's wool is a good way to keep the slugs at bay (you could probably find some on fencing on your country walks) and they don't like copper either - so bits of copper piping. Beer traps help too. Nothing like home grown food and Lidl seeds in particular are very reasonable.

  7. I'm quite annoyed that Soy is in almost everything, even our bread now has Soy flour and my digestion suffers from too much soy just as it does from too much dairy. I may have to live on just fruit and veg soon. And meat&chicken.
