Proud

Here's a little something I threw together yesterday. Education as it was then, what I learnt at school. Finding my way around with a paper map. No gadgets, no sat nav.
I have a new doggy to walk. Helping out because his owner is in hospital. Hoping it's temporary and the owner will recover. Rocky, another Rocky, common name for dogs, is a lovely boy, big and brown.
Must go. Things to do.
Catch ya later.

  1. Everything you have mentioned was covered by the time I was about 12 and map reading was taught in the brownies and guides for me.

I guess it goes to show that secondary modern teaching was very different to grammar school.

Nowadays I don’t think there is so much streaming…I wonder how that works.

I too like a paper map but with today’s roads a satnav, or maps on a smart phone, is necessary, I think - especially if you are driving somewhere yiu haven’t been before and on the continent.

    1. Satnav can be useful. I always think that if you use it to find your way to a destination, you will have to use it over and over again to reach the same destination, because you have not been taking notice of the landmarks that you have passed. I have gone to the same places a year or more later, and buildings have triggered memories from previous visits.

    2. Having just returned from two weeks in Normandy, travelling without the use of maps on my smart phone would have been a nightmare. Try to navigate your way to 6 Impasse du Renard, Rouen using only a paper map!

  2. Oh exciting another Rocky. Hope you share a picture. On your education art of the post, we started learning to write cursive in second grade. I recently went to a baby shower for a coworkers daughter in law. I wrote best wishes and signed the card in cursive and NO one under the age of 30 could read who the card was from. 🙈🙈🙈🙈 So very sad!!

    1. A year or so ago, I was told by our local postmaster to not address package labels in cursive because postal delivery people often couldn't read cursive addresses. I'm in the US. Guess this might be part of the problem with the declining level of service from the United States Postal Service.

    2. I have not heard the word 'cursive' before. I have always called it joined up writing. My handwriting is a mixture of joined up and printing.

    1. I can't shake off the old habits. They have served me well.

  4. You are very out of touch Ilona probably because you don't have children/grandchildren. Of course they learn the basics reading, writing, arithmetic, they study books and poems, have spelling tests learn Christmas songs but in addition they learn subjects and skills appropriate for the world we live in. You would not survive as a lorry driver today without a sat nav. With a paper map which is out of date the day after its printed you wouldn't know the quickest route, where road closures/roadworks are, new one way streets etc. Old and new learning is essential for kids. Embrace today's world your world is isolated and no world for today's child.

    1. A good lesson. Do not rely on technology to always be there. The brain needs to process visual information, and work out the best plan of action.

  6. I’m amazed that some of your readers either don’t know what cursive writing is or can’t read it. It’s still taught in schools today .

    1. No one has indicated here that they don't know how to read and write cursive. You may be confused by a comment I left earlier about the US Postal Service. At present, only about half of the 50 states require learning cursive.

    2. Retired teacher chose one single, simple comment, and twisted it around to fit their own narrative. That's what people do. They claim the moral high ground to assert their authority. Take no notice.

  7. Love ! Love ! Love ! The sat nav in my car
Been life changing , I can read maps, this is so much better. So many details and it’s always up to date. And you don’t to watch it while you’re driving, you can listen to instructions. I’m smitten , it’s certainly a very helpful piece of technology.

    1. I have a satnav in my car, but I never use it to give me directions. The map sits there on the screen, I only look at it to confirm that I am where I think I am. I want to look out of the windscreen and visually search for landmarks which I will remember the next time I travel the same road. I'm glad you have found something which suits you.

  8. For years I’ve used maps but after buying a new car with a sat nav I’m completely
hooked. It’s been life changing , I’ve even driven in London. What’s great about this , is that you can concentrate on the road and see landmarks, while listening to the instructions. I also love how it shows all the latest information about businesses and traffic alerts. It’s a winner for me.
