Hand on heart....... X 32

Good morning, dullish outside, here in North Lincolnshire. I will get out in the garden today, lots of little jobs piling up. Yesterday I found an hour to recover the wooden shelves at the side of my garage. The plastic was falling apart and rain had got in and damaged the cat beds. A refurb was needed so my kitties have somewhere under cover to lounge in the sun, ha ha, where is the sun?
My latest crafty project is finished. I started this a week ago, told you I was hooked on hearts. I had a spare picture frame which someone had given me, so I thought of an idea to fill it. Sixteen small felt hearts are exactly the right size for it. These are the hearts laid out on a white satin background. I took the pictures before I put the glass front on it so as not to have any reflections. Each one is hand sewn, with beads, sequins, snippets of plastic leaves, and bits of broken jewelry.

Here they are in the frame, just got to slot the glass on top, before I seal the back up. It's a new frame, but a second hand one could easily be used instead.

I am really chuffed with this. Proof that you don't need to spend hardly any money on materials for crafting purposes. Most of the felt was given to me by a friend in the village, and some from the Scrapstore. The beads and sequins are a combination of what I have collected over the years, mostly from charity shops and car boot sales, and some which have kindly been sent to me by readers. The frame was given to me. I cut 32 hearts in two sizes, then mixed up the colours, adding random embellishments from my stash. I really really like this so I'm going to keep it, but will show it at any talks I do as an example of crafting on a budget. That reminds me, I have a talk tomorrow afternoon to do, so I'd better get some stuff ready to take.

Anyone going to have a go at making hearts? Feel free to copy any of my ideas, as I often get inspiration from other bloggers, and yoootooob videos. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday. Thank you for popping in.

  4. That is really gorgeous Ilona, I've earmarked it as something I would like to do and could do. the holiday sound fab, I've never been to Norfolk. It always seems so expensive down there when I price it up, so I will be very interested in your spends when you are there. How's the summer house? Hope I haven't missed any updates on that while I've been away! Xxxx

    1. Hi SS. Summer house is good. Going to add more to it any day now. Tart it up a bit. It has a net curtain and a table and chair so far.

  5. Have you ever recorded one of your talks, as I'd love to hear one.
Love the hearts, it would work with other shapes too - I'm thinking something Christmassy.

    1. Hi. No I haven't My talks last around 45 minutes, with extra time for questions. It would be a long time for anyone to hold a camera, and I don't have a tripod, and I'm not sure the camera battery would last that long. Professional equipment would be needed.

Christmassy would work, little trees, snowmen, gift wrapped parcels, holly etc. Other ideas, fish, birds, and butterflies.

  11. It's beautiful! I can't pick out a favorite heart as I love them all. Would be a great piece or art for a baby nursery...I think I can do that. Do you mind if I copycat?

    1. Go ahead, I am chuffed that you want to make a picture. You could have teddy bears for a nursery, wearing different coloured jumpers.

  17. I like your art, and even more like your generosity with your ideas! I love beauty out of frugality. I occasionally post about my home decor, some I invented, some from the dumpster, all fun and anyone can copy. I think art can fit into most lives given a chance. I taught workshops this summer, kids and adults on making paper jewelry. You'd love it!

  23. That looks amazing, I love how you make things by recycling bits and bobs, crafts can be expensive but you have shown that they don't have to be.
Are you able to do any craft tutorials in the future?

  24. You've excelled yourself with this one Ilona, it is FANTASTIC. And I love that you've made such a lovely piece with stuff you already had. As many have said before you are one very inventive lady and truly original xxx

  25. What a perfect example of making something beautiful for very little cost. Great idea using the jewelry pieces. We don't have Scrapstores here but I find a lot of crafty items at church rummage sales on the last day when you can fill a bag with anything you like for only $1.50.

  29. Beautiful Ilona. The patience you must have in sewing on all the beads etc and the different designs for each heart shows off your imagination. It is something I would like to copy too, but I'm not a neat sewer like you and it would take me forever to do one. Maybe I could try doing a smaller version. Needs some thought.

  32. Hello. The hearts under glass are beautiful.Very nice combinations, textures and handsewing. Also done without breaking the bank.Another lovely project done by you!We enjoyed a nice walk at our local free conservation area today. We avoid the provincial park because it's fee paying to get in during the summer months.( because of their beaches and busy tourist season)A serene woodland trail is more our thing, far from crowds. Our weather has been hot and humid, mostly, but this evening we had a great downpour and thunderstorms. The rain was much needed and it is a great refresher.Thank you for sharing, warmest regards,D.

  33. I haven't read any other comments because i know what we're all saying; what a beautiful piece! You are so talented! I love when you mentioned that you picked colors willy nilly. I did that once with quilt squares; threw everything in a bag and just grabbed one as needed. It turned out lovely, too! Thanks for sharing!

  35. Oh my gosh, I LOVE this. Your artwork is always really beautiful, but for some reason I think these may be my favorite yet. I especially love the heart with the tree on it, and the heart with the tiny pink flowers.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

  36. Ilona, I so love your blog--it's the one blog I can read when the black dog is on my back and I'm wondering what alternate reality we live in (I'm a 69 year old Yank, who had the good fortune to live in England in her teens as an Air Force brat).I know it's a cliche now, but you really do keep calm and carry on, and remind me fondly of much I loved about living in England when I was 14. To get to the point, my favorite part of this post is that you are keeping your lovely picture! I always think any especially successful project must be gifted to a friend or relative, and have had the embarrassing experience (twice!) of admiring an objet d'art in the home of a relative I don't see very often, and being told that I gave it to them. No wonder I liked it. Best regards, Kate in Oregon
