    1. Hi. I like the tele bit and the radio interviews, but not keen on the newspaper articles because they all get something wrong.

    2. I think they quite often do that on purpose Ilona!

  5. You were brilliant! Well done! I love the way your philosophy flies in the face of materialism/capitalism. One of the best things I've seen on TV this year! I hope more people get on board now, reading the blog, changing their lives.

    1. Hi Jayne. Thanks. We went in the van and replayed it half an hour after it was broadcast. Everyone thought it was brilliant.

    2. Well you could argue that it only works because of other people's wasteful materialism. If there were no waste then there would be nothing to recycle, have yellow stickers put on them, no freecycle, nothing left on pavements or in skips etc. So maybe some appreciation is due to the greedy excesses of the world's inhabitants without whom everything would be full price and with no freebies.

  7. Hi Ilona, just seen the reporter scoffing your breakfast -and loving it! Hope the whole crew doesn't take a fancy to sprout stew for breakfast. It was lovely to see your art I love the bit of car and the boat underneath, also I bet Felix pouch sales soar after seeing your bags. They should pay you for advertising their product. Enjoy your day, good to see you. Elaine

  8. Yes I'm one of those educators who lives 'the life of riley' starting work at 9am lol. I am up at 5.30 every morning as although we don't get paid until 8.30am, tell that to the children with 'less than adequate home lives' who arrive at school at 7.15 because they feel safer, it's warm and they can get free breakfast.

    1. You are the unsung heroes in my eyes. A teacher can make such an impact on a child's life, whether it be through the teaching they do or the safe adult presence they provide. Thank you xx

    1. Hi. Morning is not the best time to go. there won't be much and it will not have a big discount. Later in the day is best. The later you leave it the bigger the discount. Try different times.

    2. Thank you Ilona I might try and go later today. I think you're a real cool lady xx

  12. Not seen any of your telly interviews yet, just a thought but perhaps you could start joining Martin Lewis from money saving expert on his weekly spot on Good Morning Britain as a guest presenter? :-) Jo x

  13. Hope I get to see you on the telly at some point, I seem to keep missing it. Debbie

  14. That was great, Ilona - I have just watched in on the itv website. Thought it was much more positive than the newspapers, and it was lovely to see your creativity and art work getting such a feature! Well done x

  15. Just watched the piece you did for Good Morning Britain and I loved it. You should have your own show. Enjoy the rest of your day.

  17. Mum phoned to let me know you were on, unfortunately I was out with the dogs, I'll find it online later.

You seem to be coping with this full on week of fame very well :-)

  18. Great interview Ilona. You came across really well and hopefully this will dispel all the stuff the newspapers misrepresented. I loved seeing your artwork and especially liked the curtains. I think you have a lovely, creative and characterful home based on thrift and innovation. Kristel.

  19. I hope we can see links online of all your interviews, as I too am in Canada and can't watch it otherwise.

  21. Just watched you Ilona-how calm you were during the interview. It's a pity people can't understand the difference between thrifty and mean. For me, meaness is about a lack of empathy for others but thrifty is just plain common sense. I always read your blog each day and you always inform/entertain or just plain make me smile! Catriona

  23. Reading from across the pond - well done you are the famous neighbour.

I haven't heard anyone say "Crikey" for such a long day (means element of surprise) made me miss home.

Love the comment from someone who said the crew liked your breakfast - what a kind person you are.

  24. Will you send a link to your interviews for those of us in the U.S.?

    1. Plus 1 for that suggestion. I tried various ways to see the ITV broadcast but it won't let us US folks in...at least not that I could figure out. I was offered a chance to buy an iPad ITV app, but declined ;). So if you have a you tube video version, that would be grand.

    2. Sorry, but I don't have a yoootooob version, someone else might put them on. I don't know how to do it. I can only put my own videos on.

  26. Ilona, you were brilliant. I am chuffed to bits that you are spreading the word worldwide. I bet it makes a heck of a lot of people sit up and take notice. Iaspire to be much more like you. x

  27. I'd like a non residential address, so I can send you some tea bags!! ie no street address for privacy. I hope the tv studios give you some supermarket food vouchers-gift vouchers/tea boxes for all this! Make it a long used by date on the products, so it lasts all retirement! So, address please Ilona. Not residential of course.

    1. Hello Anon. Thank you for your kind offer, but I have no use for tea bags. Please give them to someone who might need them. I have a large box of PG Tips left by a journalist and I'm about to give them away to my friend.

  28. Just watched your clip on Good Morning Britain, which is not a programme I normally see. You were fab and excellent Ilona. Well done. Just your normal, happy, straightforward self, which the interviewers seemed to be quite thrown by. They should put more folk like yourself on the TV for everyone to see, instead of people who are doing it all for the impression they are going to make instead of just telling it like it is as you do. Let us know when the offers start rolling in! Good on you; a fabulous appearance from a fabulous lady. Ann x

  31. I am sure, you know this, Ilona but you have a lot of people who wish you the very best. Your tips, hints and suggestions are great. I think you would be a great person to have as a friend. You are one of the most balanced people around, very grounded. I feel very privileged that you share so much with us. I love your shed. Thank you.xx

  32. I followed the link given in an earlier comment and watched the interview. I too thought it was great and the interviewer really liked your stew. I thought your patchwork curtains were really pretty and I love the the bags with the cats, useful and pretty and a good use of recycling. I am meeting up with my retired friend (living on her pension) tomorrow and shall be introducing her to your blog.

  33. Watched you this morning and we thought you were great. Couldn't get over the stupid comment by Kate Garraway at the end about bags made from cat food would smell. How can anyone be so stupid as to think you wouldn't thoroughly scrub the pkts out!
I keep on visiting your blog to see what else you are doing and reading the comments.

  34. Ilona. I just watched the tv clip from Gill's link. I loved that artwork you had in your hallway and that part of it was from one of your cars :) Also I am a big sprout fan and I'm not bothered if I have to eat a meal 3 days on the trot, as long as it is tasty. You looked quite relaxed on the programme - shows you are getting used to working in front of the camera - hopefully it won't be too long before you are behind your camera again, sharing photo's of your daily life :)
