Hello. I haven't said much about the referendum and the bloody aftermath which has been unfolding in this last week or so, but now's the time. Today is the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, commemorations are taking place throughout Britain and France. The bloodiest battle ever in Military history took place, almost 20,000 British soldiers were killed on the first day. These men gave their lives for their country, a country that is now torn apart by a bunch of nasty, self obsessed bullies that will do anything to claw their way to the top.
The way our political so called leaders are behaving is an embarrassment to the country. They should be ashamed. We had a referendum, the people voted, and since then all hell has broke loose. Tempers have been boiling over and the verbal punch up has been gathering momentum ever since. Our so called cabinet ministers who are supposed to be familiar with the democratic system have been scrapping among themselves, showing their true colours. The media has been delighting in all this mayhem and is guilty of whipping up hysteria resulting in vicious name calling which has descended into bitter arguments more reminiscent of pack animals ripping their prey to shreds.
It seems every politician is a target for name calling and derogatory remarks about their appearance. That is called bullying, which then permeates right down through the pecking order from top to bottom, and ends up gaining momentum littering social media. Shouldn't they be setting an example by acting in a civilized manner? They should be ashamed.
Pessimism, doom and gloom, and glass half empty is a sure recipe for failure. Pessimism cripples ambition. Bullying destroys confidence and creates a hierarchy of self obsessed individuals, who are blinded by their own personal ambitions, oblivious to the wider picture. There is no room for this behavior in politics. You were voted in by the people to serve the people. We look to you for guidance, you are erasing any respect we had for you.
The country has a window of opportunity to build a better Britain, but will it happen? I doubt it, they are too busy squabbling among themselves. I want to slap their stupid backsides. I want every politician to apologize to every colleague they have hurt with their condescending and patronizing remarks. For goodness sake get your acts together. How can we look up to our leaders when they are no better than a bunch of kids in a playground fighting over the football.. They should be ashamed.

Very well articulated Ilona, I totally agree with you. Luckily you have many hobbies to take your mind of these things. Can you please send your blog of today to all the relevant newspapers maybe them politicians will read and learn they need to be taking down a peg or two. People are not stupid. Someone from the Netherlands.

As a mother of an 8 & 10 yr old, in Australia, I find your comments insulting! From what we see on the news here children in playgrounds are far more civilized than your pollies (& ours for that matter)

DeleteYes I think the point of the post was missed. Which all goes to show that the voice of the people doesn't amount to much when it is ill informed, and doesn't understand information.

DeleteWell said Ilona, as always the voice of reason. I think it is terrible how they are behaving. I did vote as I always do but to be honest we try and live our lives as best we can without needing to rely on what they say or do. I know that may sound a bit daft but we are trying to be as self reliant, amongst other things, so that we are not too affected by the law making of politicians as far as we are able. If that makes much sense to you, yay!

I am fed up with all the squabbling - we had the referendum (which I thought he was wrong to call) but now let's get on with it and make our country great again! Isn't that the reason why we are remembering today all those who lost their lives 100 years ago?

ReplyDeleteWell said Ilona, I reached the "fed up to the back teeth" stage within 3 days of the referendum. All the hot air in the world will not change the result so why they don't put up or shut up is beyond me. Too busy worrying about feathering their nests maybe. As for the disgraceful remarks being hurled around, soap and water around a few tongues is in order I feel.
ReplyDeleteThere is no change in their behaviour, this is what the politicians were like all along. If you voted for those who now turn their backs on what apparently they wanted, well all I can say is that I am glad I did not. The 'win' was based on lies, deceit and stupidity. We now live with the devastating result.

DeleteI can't remember the UK being in such a mess - but what do I know, as if the media would have us believe I'm just an illiterate racist from the North and spend all my day in Wetherspoons drinking! I actually heard an idiot on Radio 2 the other day saying that a second referendum would basically end up with graduates voting against non-graduates. Well, I felt like telling him you don't need much to get to Uni these days - a couple of E's and clearing will find you a place somewhere on a useless course. (Nothing against good universities with worthwhile courses). They need to just get on now and accept matters.

DeleteThink we're all agreed then, the referendum campaigns were BOTH disgraceful; lying and scaremongering. And, as well as the Tory leadership punch-up, the Labour party are doing their utmost to stab each other in the back. It is said politics is a dirty business and I guess that if you wish to succeed in politics you generally have to have a) ambition and b) ruthlessness. Not for me. I am pleased that the tv channels are showing various programmes due to the anniversary of the Somme, it was a shocking episode in history and we need to be grateful to the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice: their lives. ReplyDeleteAbsolutely agree Ilona. We won the chance to move Britain forward again and are now fast becoming a laughing stock and proving the naysayers correct. Personally I would like to see Farage at the helm, whatever you think of the man at least he has the country's interests at heart and would get his finger out and DO something.

DeleteIt seems politicians on both sides of the pond have, in my grandmother's words, "lost their marbles". The news media then makes it into a three ring circus in order to generate more advertising revenue for profits. But all those men in WWI didn't sacrifice their lives for naught. Britons have a centuries old reputation for being stalwart, resourceful and resilient. The road may be bumpy in the immediate, but you will endure.

DeleteElise, guess you live in USA, we're all going to remain friends and trade etc with the world; the politicians here are at the moment in time, are power-mad and greedy for their own ambitions. This type of viciousness across both main parties - Tory and Labour - hasn't been seen before, it's getting very nasty and in some cases personal smears. The good news is that the pound has regained some strength and also the stock market. The nation voted and the result was clear so we all have to get on with it and stick together through inevitable choppy waters. Amanda
DeleteIt is worth remembering that the Prime Minister was advised not to call the referendum in the first place particularly so soon after an election. He chose to do so anyway.

I got cross with politicians, the media and members of the public saying that those people who voted 'leave' were working class - the inference was badly educated, ignorant and old. Well, I am none of those. And anyway, what's wrong with old? Natalie

Ilona, so very well said. I am a definite 'remainer' but now that this has happened we need to show spirit, gumption and enterprise. This is ALL disgraceful behaviour and I would be ashamed of my primary school children if they behaved likewise. What has happened to us all and no wonder people feel free to be attack others racially, they all need a jolly good talking to!
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be a world-wide trend. We have the same nonsense going on here in the USA. All the politicians do is argue and nothing gets accomplished. If you ask me, Putin is the only one that makes any sense. If you have watched any of his videos, he is not like all the other leaders. It is such a shame we cannot depend on our government for anything anymore.
ReplyDeleteI have watched so many discussions over a long period of time and Putin and Farage are the only two that seem to actually give an answer to the question that was put to them. This doesn't tend to make them popular at times, but it's far better than all that playing for time until they are off the hook.
DeleteI agree with you Ilona. It looks like there are several other countries that want to get out too and I can't say I blame them. Guess we will have to keep calm and carry on until this mess is all sorted out.

ReplyDeleteI'm American and i agree with Hilogene Oltman; despicable behavior all around! I couldn't watch the whole film; i don't want to see young men killed. My dad fought in Korea, the war that wasn't. I know how that affects people.
