Check in time for the International Walking Group

Good morning. The year is whizzing along, half way through it already. Howz my walking been going for this month? We had a lot of rain, so it was a matter of going out and doing two miles instead of three, in between showers. When it rained all day I hoped I could find 35 minutes before bed time. Looking at the calendar I missed seven days completely, but as I had a few miles in hand from May, due to the holiday in Cornwall, I managed to keep on track. I couldn't let it slip back too far, so I did a couple of days of five miles to balance it out, and finished on 500 miles yesterday. That was close.

So how did you all do? Is anybody monitoring their progress daily like I do? Writing it down on a calendar, or in a book? I find having a calendar on my desk in front of me keeps me in check. Every square gets filled in, even if I don't do any walking. I try not to have too many 'X' s At a glance I can see if I am keeping up, or lagging behind.

The sun is shining this morning, but showers are predicted so I will find a slot of one hour to do the three miles. I spent most of the day in the garden yesterday, mowing the lawns and trimming the hedges, so that's looking tidy. Some re potting to do, and a bit more hedge trimming.

Now it's your turn, Let's have some reports from the International Walking Group members. Are you keeping up with it at the half year mark, or has your New Years Resolution died a death. If you have not yet joined the group now would be a good time to start. Why not give yourself a target for six months. Mine will be another 500 miles, yours could be anything you like. Members are responsible for monitoring their own progress, and counting their own distances. I use bikehike.co.uk. I have a two and a three mile walk around my village, and will add in any walking done in other areas. It's up to you what you do.

Breakfast for me now, then off to Crafty Club. I'll catch ya later.  ilona

  1. I cannot believe we are halfway through the year already.. Given the terrible weather and flash floods where I live, I am quite pleased that I managed to get out for more walks than I had anticipated being able to do. Total mileage for June was 39.1miles (a bit disappointed that I did not make the 40mile marker); total for year so far is 156.8miles. My target for the year is 300miles, so halfway there, yeh!! I am beginning to enjoy my walks now that I'm getting a bit fitter and it's been great to see the change in seasons in a nearby park that I have discovered - I have only been living in my current locale for 18 years, and cannot believe that I didn't realise the park paths existed - hey ho!!

    1. Well done, Gillian. I can see you are quite upbeat about your walking achievements. That's a sign it's doing some good.

    2. thanks! it's been a fantastic boost to be in your group; I doubt that i would have kept it up otherwise. I keep a note of my walks on a calendar which hangs in the kitchen; it's amazing to see the miles clock up just by walking an hour in the day.

  3. Hello Ilona and all fellow walkers! It's really fantastic I can tell you I managed to walk 97 kilometers in June, bringing my half-way total at 557 kilometers. Cycling went even better: 213 kilometers in June. The beautiful weather made me do some 60-70 kilometer tours in the fantastic countryside around my home town.
For me it's the perfect way to get and stay fit and in shape, physically as well as mentally, and experience joy, peace and patience in my daily life.
So happy I stepped in with your walking group in January 2017, still stepping on! In those two and a half years I have lost 18 kilos of weight. Another wonderful 'coincidence'.
Sending love from Dokkum in The Netherlands to you Ilona, and to everyone walking along.

  5. We had some terribly hot days, yesterday 38°C, and even in the morning it was too hot to walk. So I am quite content with my 39 miles, which bring me to a total of 519.

    1. That's a brilliant total for the first half of the year. I don't like the heat either. Must remember to take a drink with me.

Hello Ilona! I missed the check in for May, so here are my totals for May and June: May was 143 miles, and June was 132. Total now 704. My monthly totals have decreased a bit because my poor old senior dog has really started to slow down in the last couple of months so we are walking more slowly - taking more time to cover less ground! I really should try to get out for a longer walk on my own as I am missing the old routes, but it's hard to find the time to take her out and then get back out again by myself. Anyways, congrats to all who have continued with the challenge.

    1. I had that same problem with an older dog. I had to pick my times when I went for a walk without him.

  8. Hi Ilona and walkers I've done 58 this month, my personal target is 50 so I'm pleased to be over that this month. I did 13.5 miles in one day along the Thames Path, fantastic place to walk, really enjoyed it.

    1. Walking alongside water is so uplifting. Glad you are sticking with your targets, it's an extra incentive to get out there.

  9. Hello Ilona and fellow walkers,
Despite having a very busy month, I have managed 85 miles in June making a halfway total of 538 miles so on target for the year. Good luck to everyone with their personal targets, whatever they may be!

  10. Well done to everyone on reaching, or nearly reaching, personal targets!
We started out this year aiming for 1000miles in the year. However at the moment We’re just below 600 at 576 so far. In June we walked 92miles.
I record our miles in a small note book. Each page is divided into 7 sections for a week and I record the mileage and a short comment about the walk ( or why we didn’t walk).
I've just started a new book this year as I’ve kept a record since you started the challenge in January 2016.
I'm so grateful that you did as we've benefitted in many ways, being fitter, lighter and generally happier being but three of them.
    Forward into July.

    1. Well done, Sue. Fantastic miles. People drop out because they expect to see an immediate difference in their health and well being. You are reaping the benefits because you are still walking.

  11. June totals: 61,367 steps; days of walking 1000+ steps 21/30. Quite a few of the steps are the result of going up and down stairs. Much better than last month! In addition to getting outdoors more often, this walking intention is helping me be less wobbly on my pins. Hooray! Looks like everyone here is doing excellently. Sedgwick

  13. Hi Ilona,
As usual, I can’t seem to post to your blog (my problem, not yours).

Here are my June numbers. I am happy to say that I kept walking, even as the Arizona desert sun and heat came on strong. I should note that our highest temperatures were beaten by France last week so I probably should not claim any awards ;)

June total was 75 miles, bringing year to date to 473. Close to your 500 mile mark!

    Thank you,
    Hilogene in Az.

  14. Hi Ilona,
I’ve tried three days running now to post my miles to your blog but my message just disappears. So if it’s not showing today I will keep my miles and add them to next months and try then.
    Best wishes,
    Jenette

  18. Apologies I'm late checking in! So far I have clocked up just under 500 miles, in the past month I have started tackling a 1-5 hill on my way home from work three lunchtimes a week, instead of taking the longer route on the flat. I feel much better for it already! Keep going everyone!!
