Check in time for the Walking Group.

 Good morning. It's that time again, the months are whizzing by, only two left until the end of the year. It's check in time for the International Walking Group. How are you all doing? Are you sticking with it all the way? 

The target for ten months is 833 miles, I managed to get there despite missing the end of September target. I put my boots on and pulled my socks up and got out there. I am now on 847 miles, which gives me a good start for November. 

It's the walking which is getting me through the uncertainty of the current situation at the moment. If there is one thing which gives me hope, gives me strength, and adds some meaning to everything, it's being out in the open fields, down lanes and tracks, and taking in the changing seasons. 

Let's hear it from you. Are you using walking as a therapy as I do? What are the benefits you have noticed in yourselves? Clearer heads, alone with your thoughts, relaxation maybe? Answers below in a comment.

I must get out in the car and have some more days out. It's not good for car camping at the moment, the days are short and the nights are long, but hopefully next year the camping will start again. Something to look forward to.

  1. Hello Ilona and fellow walkers,
    Three weeks ago I bought myself a 'senior's stroller' :>)) to hopefully become a walker again. It's of great support to go steadily whilst pain decreases for about two kilometres at a time. I am so happy to be on the move again.
    Cycling is no problem so far until the streets get wet and slippery. Then my bike won't be pulled out.
    It is fantastic and I am so happy I can enjoy these two different kinds of excercise in the fresh air of my year round beautiful town and its surroundings.
    I will not be counting kilometres anymore. Hope you don't mind.

  2. My total for 10 months is 1,031. Because of my foot issue and environmental factors, I've had to readjust my goal for the year. Now I will be happy with 1,150 for the year and ecstatic if I can exceed that.

    The Oxford photo brings back memories, and now I want to walk through Yorkshire. I love those pastoral scenes.

  3. Hello All - I missed the last check in so have two months' worth to add on. In September I did 130 miles and in October 145, so my total is now at 1404 for the year - yippee! My goal is 1500, but I'll see how far over that I can get in the next two months. Hopefully the weather is kind. Just missed my goal last year due to a sudden early December surgery - certainly hope that doesn't happen again ;-). Have a great day!

  5. Hello fellow walkers! I clocked 86 miles this month, for a total of 722 so far this year. Ilona, your words are very encouraging regarding the benefits of walking and is why I joined the walking group. The benefit for me has been an improvement with my chronic hip pain; it's not gone but is greatly relieved and most days I don't even think about it.

  6. I noticed that walking gives me the opportunity to think things over and get my head free. The beauty of nature helps me to put everything into perspective. I also realized that when I don´t do at least a short walk in the morning, I am crabby all day until I can do a walk.
    I am now at 805 miles and hope to reach my goal of 1000, if my knee is not going to act up again.

    1. Hello Hilde. Short walks can give you such a boost. Maybe try using a knee support bandage, just to remind yourself to be careful when you put your foot down.

  7. All 4 of these photos bring back happy memories. Thank you for that ilona. A couple of years ago, my daughter showed me that I had a step counter on my phone. Without realising it, I'd already been walking 1,000 miles per year. At present, I usually walk for 40 minutes before breakfast with my daughter in the Australian bush. On average we see about 20 kangaroos, some only a few yards away.

  8. Good morning Ilona and fellow walkers. A much better day in prospect today after a run of wet and very windy weather. Passed 1000miles at the start of October and walked 109 during the month and have now reached 1100 so hope to exceed last year's total of 1166 for the year. Most people seem to benefit from walking both mentally and physically although if you don't, I suppose you wouldn't be part of this group! However, if in doubt, give it a go! I think little and often is a good way to start and the discipline of a routine is beneficial if you no longer go out to work. Good luck to all with your targets for the rest of the year! Vicki

  9. Good morning all. I envy those being able to walk in nature, city streets are not the same! Only 41m this month but still trying.

    1. Hello Sansthing. Don't give up trying. What about snapping a few photo's and putting them on your blog. You might see something that you haven't noticed before. Yesterday I saw a yard full of red tower cranes. They would make some very interesting photo's.

  10. Good morning
    I have enjoyed catching up on everyone's progress. I walked 89 miles in October for a total year to date of 950 miles. I love walking not only for the physical aspect but also for the mental aspect. Just being outside helps clear my mind. I don't see kangaroos on my walk but was very pleased to see three coyotes the other day. Two were approximately 20' from us and the other one was in a field playing with the bales of hay. We routinely see deer and enjoy watching as their coloration changes season to season.

  11. Hi Ilona and everyone,
    Great photos,nostalgic memories. Sherwood Forest I have never been to.
    I liked Oxford and the Ashmolean.
    The Yorkshire Dales one of my favourite places in the UK.
    We used to live near Wells next to the sea. The Pancakeship (het Pannekoekenschip) used to be in Alkmaar in the Netherlands. Thats where we are living now (nearby).
    I have done 103 miles in october, so now a total of 964 miles.

    1. Hello guusje. I have been to Alkmaar, many years ago, on the back of my boyfriends motorbike. He had a friend there and we stayed in his apartment. Well done on the miles.

  12. Done 86 miles in October (849 total). I love getting outside to clear my mind and stretch my legs after sitting at a desk seizing up.

  13. Hello fellow walkers, 177 klms for me this month,for a total of 1888 klms of my years target of 1931 (1200 miles - I hope :D) I may even surpass that, you never know! I absolutely love walking, it is definitely therapy for me - I can just concentrate on enjoying the exercise, fresh air and surroundings, and forget about lifes stresses for awhile.

  14. I'm still walking every morning but haven't been logging my miles. Next year I'll be a bit more organised. Tony and I are already looking forward to car camping next year as we have really enjoyed the experience.

    1. I am looking forward to car camping as well. The days are short at the moment so it won't be much fun sitting in a car for 12 - 14 hours a night.
