Messing about by the river

It's been a busy couple of days. Yesterday morning I was on Radio Humberside, they rang and asked if I could talk about money saving and frugal living. No problem I said. However, they kept me hanging on, and by the time they started the interview it was almost time for the news, so my time was cut short.
Ten minutes later they rang back and apologised for not giving me much air time and asked if I could go on again, they offered me a slot for tomorrow morning (Thursday), at 10.30am. I am going on the bus to the studio in Hull to do it this time, I much prefer it that way. David Burns is easy to chat with. You should be able to listen live by going to the BBC iplayer site. Sorry but I don't think it is available if you are outside the UK.Try this link
My fresh food stocks have been shrinking as I haven't done a big shop for two weeks, so now it's 'use up whatever is in the fridge' time. I had a pot of Value potato salad which needed to be eaten, but I have no salad to go with it. Not to worry, I have plenty of bread and half a cucumber, so why not toast the bread and microwave the potato salad and cucumber. Sorted. So this was my lunch yesterday. I must say it was a bit different, warm potato salad. I ate it but I probably won't do it again, ha ha.
Me and Rocky were walking along the riverbank yesterday, and in the space of five minutes, five different boats passed us by, either heading towards the Humber to go out to sea, or coming inland to go to a port further up the river. It is quite difficult to navigate this section as it has a lot of sandbanks. You can see the boats zigzaging along from one side to the other. One of the boats was too far past for me to get a photo, but I got the other four. I love to see a lot of activity on the river. I think they mostly carry aggregate and scrap steel.
Rocky waiting patiently, he is such a good boy.
I was talking to Rocky's owner, yesterday she said she might not come home, she didn't. I said I would have him if her car wasn't in the drive. So here he stayed. He slept on the bed with me and two cats, it was a bit of a tight squeeze as they all wanted to be up at the top end. A lot of shuffling took place. This is his favourite chair, next to me while I am on the computer. He's still here now, when the car appears I will take him back. At least he is getting out a bit more now. He is starting to learn how to socialise with people and other dogs, which is a good thing.
Right, time to make my dinner, what will it be? Potatoes, carrots, and a tin of tuna fish I think. I will try and hold off on the shopping a bit longer, after all I have got loads of tins in stock, and bread in the freezer. Toodle pip.

  4. I have been to Humberside only once. I couldn't believe how flat it was. The riverside looks lovely, and there seem to be plenty of places to walk, which is nice. Poor Rocky, he deserves better from his owner.

  8. Rocky is like the neighbor's cat who moved in with me. He was here a bit, then a little longer stay and then...our cat! Rocky looks pretty content to me. You are very good good to him and you will be rewarded.

  9. What is the name of that river, please?

Give Mr. David Burns a message for me, if you will: Ilona has an international audience that would very much like to listen to her. How?

I just could not heat potato salad and eat it. I like it hot when first made. There are probably things that I eat that would turn your stomach!

Do you ever forage for food and bring home things like dandelion leaves for a salad or t cook? When I learn how, I will.

  10. I think if you carry on with Rocky the way you have been he will end up yours in time.....a happy thought.

He does always look slightly bewildered, but he's a lovely little thing.

  11. I loved your photos of the river. I was brought up in Hull and as a young adult loved to sit at the Victoria dock and watch the Humber. I loved the way it changed colour depending on the weather. I've lived in Lincoln for 25 years and it's something I still miss very much.

  12. Poor Rocky dog. He has such a beautiful face. :) Good thing you are there to look after him, or he'd be trapped inside forever by the sounds of things!

Think I'll tune in to the radio later on! Have a nice time!

  13. I just finished listening to your interview. Hope you had a nice day out! I think what you said about going shopping without a list is a very good idea. A lot of frugal people advocate going WITH a list to avoid impulse buys, but if you are very disciplined I can see how your way would be even cheaper. I would have to learn a bit more discipline first!

  14. I tuned in to Radio Humberside (online as I am in Ireland)and enjoyed your interview very much. You are proof that the most valuable things in life are already free and apart from meeting our basic needs, the rest is just a waste of precious time and effort.I read your blog every day and am inspired by it. Thank you for having the courage to stand out from the crowd!

  16. Love the look of your potato salad, Ilona, but not so sure about it warm. :-/ Rocky looks right at home on his chair. It brings a tear to my eye looking at him, he's got such a cheeky but loveable little face, it's a pity you couldn't have him permanently. He certainly looks like he enjoys his jaunts out with you. Will your Radio clips be on for long? Having quite a few problems with my computer just now, shuts down constantly, would love to have a listen though. If I go near Youtube or music clips etc, computer says, No. Got a lovely day here today, very warm, hope you have too. Cheers for now, Christy.

  18. Lovely shots of the ships on the river. My geography is so bad that I wasn't aware of how close Hull is to your area.

Trying to listen to you on the radio but so far all I've had is news, weather and the Bangles. Hope you start soon.

  19. Ilona, have you any idea what time you went on air please? That way I might be able to find you without having to listen to all the rest of it.

  20. So happy for you and Rocky that he got to spend the night. How did you initially approach Rocky's owner about his situation...I have a dog in my neighborhood that seems to be in the yard all the time. I hope I'm wrong but it just seems like she doesn't get much human contact...and I'd be willing to spend time with her...thanks

  21. Ilona, what a star you are! Have just finished listening to you on BBC iplayer (Toffeeapple: approx 1hr 46mins into programme). You came across very well and I'm sure your message got through to many people. Loved the 'swearing'.

I'm saving at the moment for a fancy new sewing machine. It costs a lot but it certainly won't be the subject of a finance agreement. Every spare penny I get goes into the savings account I opened for it and when I get it I know I'll value it more than something bought on credit.

  23. I'm at the using up stage with the fridge, too! Still have to chuck some leftovers that never made it back to the table. Spring is a busy time. Love the beauty of your soul and approach to life! Keeping my fingers crossed that Rocky has found a home, at last.
