Cut, colour, and blow dry for £1.

Hello. It had to be done, this birds nest of a hairstyle had to go. Hanging down in my face, irritating in my neck, and constantly having to be brushed and clipped back. It always seems to get greasy more quickly when it's long, straggly, and unruly. Only one thing to do, chop it off. How to do it? Two mirrors set at an angle, facing each other so I can see the back of my head. Here is a post explaining how I do it. I usually do this twice a year.
Good grief, what a mess.

Quite a lot chopped off.

I already had a £1 colour, bought a few weeks ago in readiness for this. They work a treat, no need to pay any more. It lightens it a couple of shades, getting rid of the darker roots. I also find that it makes my hair soft and shiny, using the conditioner in the box. I never use conditioner any other time.

Looks good to me, and all for the bargain price of £1, and heating the water. I have saved a good bit of money since I started cutting my own hair. Long may it last.

Dinner tonight was a plate of lovely, mostly green, vegetables.

Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

  1. Meanqueen - would you please share the Brand of hair dye that you used please? There are so many different ones I don't know which one is best, and I really need to start colouring my hair myself too. Thank you very much.

    1. Hello. It was derma V10, tech solutions. Here is a link to the page on their web site. I used extra light natural blonde. I always get a colour a bit lighter than I think I need, then check it every ten minutes. I left it on for 30 minutes.

  2. We all shave/clip our heads in our house, I enjoy not spending money on that. Even the clippers were given to us.

    1. That's fine if a short cut suits you. I have some clippers, bought them 20 years ago to cut a boyfriends hair. We parted company, but I would never use them on my own hair. I would look like a man, my face is sort of masculine, not pretty, I want to keep some of my female attributes.

  3. I coloured my own and waxed my face yesterday for cost of about $12. Felt really pleased with myself. I have to get it cut though as I keep it very short ($25 x 5/year). I'm thinking that my daughter could do light trim every now and again and reduce that cost for me. I shall see. I always cut my husbands and have done so for a long time. We have saved heaps on this alone.

  5. You always do a great job. I have recently learned how to cut my hair with clippers (even though it is relatively long). It is far easier than using scissors and I don't get any scissors marks - nice beveled finish to the short layers. I also bought a clip to cut my fringe. I think it was only 2-3 pounds from ebay. Comb the fringe clip it and pull it down - its curved so gives a really nice shape. My only indulgence is Olia hair dye because I get the perfect colour of red/brown and it leaves my hair very shiny and takes ages to fade. I always buy 3 for 2.

  6. Hi Ilona, looks fabulous, good on you, I keep my hair super short but I don’t think I could cut it as intricately as my hair dresser, unless I be brave and just clipper it, maybe one day. Have a lovely day. Fi

  7. Hi Ilona,
I really admire your hair cut and colour; and savings! Good on you!
This is one of those areas where I am struggling to make the transition. i used to get my hair dyed and cut, then to save money I just get it cut. Now I've stretched the time between the cuts by 2 weeks. However, over the years I have developed a personal relationship with my hairdresser and I am aware that by not using her services reduces her income....any ideas on how to "break free" when you have a relationship like this. Tried saying i was growing my hair and then there were all sorts of reasons why you still need to get regular trims. oh dear i can see it's my problem and it's probably her marketing ploy....but still any ideas on this one. It's like lots of these wonderful tricks you have, sometimes I need to find a way to transition into it. Cheers Marigold

    1. Hi. Yes it is her marketing ploy, she needs the business so if it means she can keep you as a customer she will be nice to you. You could stretch the time between cuts longer and longer, and steer clear of her salon, take another route so you don't bump into her.

You could get a cut somewhere else which is cheaper and if you see her and she mentions it, lie. Say your aunt, cousin, sister, daughter, cut it for you. If she is as pushy as you say, that would be a turn off for me, I don't like being questioned about my motives, I make decisions on what suits me, not to please other people. You might have to be firm. If you have other friends, losing one is not going to matter too much.

  9. I've not been to the hairdressers since last April.I cut the ends off myself & have let the layers grow out.I will go soon I think as he layers it better than I can & mines quite fine now.If it's a mess I wear a wig. Most of the time it's scraped back anyway. You have done a good job again.Perhaps you could do mobile hairdressing x

    1. Do you know, I probably could, just simple cutting and blow drying though. I'll take my scissors to Crafty Club this morning to see if anyone wants a trim.

  11. It looks really good Ilona. I wish I could cut my own as the price they charge is awful, but my hair is very difficult as it is extremely fine and static and has no curl or bounce. If it had more natural body to it I would give it a go. I buy hair colour in Wilko's - their prices aren't bad and there's no way I could ever afford to get it coloured in a salon now.

    1. I don't know how people can afford to get their hair coloured in a salon, the prices are extortionate. I suppose it's the cost of overheads and insurance.

  12. Well I’ve parked myself up on my pillows in bed ready for part 2 of the ring covering and what do I see ........a haircut ☹️.... looks very nice though .
It reminds me about the time I went to Malta last September I went out on the balcony with my husband fired up the laptop to see what Miss Meanqueen was discussing only to find you trying on all your pants ( with photograph) 😳 but we did have a giggle over that. Xxxxx

  13. I stopped dying mine altogether, couldn't be bothered anymore. I always use conditioner though, I have that firmly in my "needs". Karen

    1. Thank you. I almost trained as a hairdresser when I left school, my Aunt worked in a salon and could get me a place. I decided not to, and got a job in a shop instead.

  18. You always do a nice job! The first time I cut mine I was about 15. I had no money so what do you do? I cut it a few more times through school then stopped. Lately, i’ve been using the clippers on my husband and figured why can’t he cut a straight line for me? I have curly hair so no-one can tell if it’s a bit off. He’s been doing a fabulous job and i’ve Gotten compliments on it. I won’t color my hair, though. As you say, I don’t have time (or patience) to faff around with it.

  19. That looks GREAT! I gave not paid for a haircut in two years. I am going to have exbf cut it on bottom on Wednesday or Thursday. I cut the bangs and sides today and will put color on tomorrow, okay maybe tonight. I never find hair color that cheap.

  23. Absolutely brilliant! I am fortunate in having a local hairdresser and get a dry cut for £10 - but yours is even better!!! SueM

  24. Looking good Ilona! I'm 28 and I have been cutting my own hair for ten years now - I made a right mess of it at first but practice makes perfect! I have also stopped dying my hair and have quite a lot of grey now,but it doesn't bother me - I've been told it looks good and like I have deliberately highlighted it! Maybe people are just being polite but it doesn't bother me so why should I care what anyone thinks :) the cost of going to the hairdresser for a cut and colour is outrageous now. I used to get mine done by a mobile hairdresser which was cheaper but at least when you cut your own you can have it exactly how you want. Also not to sound horrible but I hate how long it takes a hairdresser to cut it - only takes me about ten minutes max. I also don't like being asked questions every five minutes - she would stop cutting to chat and I swear they do this to deliberately drag it out so they can charge more! I'm an introvert aswell which makes it even more uncomfortable when they start asking personal questions, I want them to cut my hair and then leave as quickly as possible! ha ha.

  26. That looks great Ilona! Last year my regular hairdresser did such a rushed shoddy job and was so rude to me as well, while fawning over the next customer that came in the salon, that I decided to do it myself. One watch of a video online and out came the scissors. Five minutes later I was very proud of my lovely layered hair. Both myself and my husband think I do a better job than she ever did, so now the money stops in my pocket and I cut my own hair whenever the fancy takes me! Tracy

  27. Btw, meant to mention - Poundland sells hair dyes at £1 each. My last visit to hairdresser for cut&colour was £110, not excessive for my area; that was 6 years ago. I'm not colouring at mo but I cut my own; like you I have wavy hair so can get away with the odd squint bit at the back - brilliant instructions on Youtube.

  28. My neighbour cut my daughter's hair yesterday for free. We all help each other out- dog walking etc. Yours looks great! I've stopped dying mine- all grey and get plenty of compliments! Sarah

  29. I like your hair style. I dyed mine too yesterday (Sunday). I buy my dye from African hair shops (the dye is suitable for African or Asian hair). I normally buy Blasol but there wasn’t any the last time I went so I plumped for Sta Sof-Fro in brown black. It did a lovely job for £1.99. All my dyes are this price. I have long straight hair and can’t cut mine so I go for a cut (I always negotiate the price). I will make my own conditioning mask from time to time - just a bit of olive oil left on the head for about 30 mins. Natalie

  31. I have cut my hair several times in the past and it looked ok. However, I find it to be a treat to myself to go to the salon twice a year for a cut, shampoo and blow dry. It feels so good and my hair has gotten thinner and harder to work with, I would not be able to do a good job of cutting it any more. I enjoy someone washing my hair, it is a real luxurious treat for me and I always look forward to it. I economize in other ways.

  32. But I must say you did a wonderful job on your hair.

  33. Your hair looks amazing! Well done on cutting your own hair!!

  34. I think my haircare is the only area where I may'out frugal' you. No dye or hot water heating, no electricity for drying it and I use the same soap to wash it with as I use for my rest of my body. Oh there is a little bit of gel every now and then. I forgot that. Maybe we're tying for the thrifty hair award then! xx
