Magic

A good crop of magic mushrooms in my garden. They have come up where the new grass joins the old. What do you suggest, grilled, stuffed, roasted, or a stir fry? 
They don't look like the ones you buy in a shop. These are pink underneath. I've done a risk assessment and I think I would be wise not to put them inside my body. You can't be too careful can you?   ;o) 

We've had a massive downpour, and it looks like there maybe more to come. I am due to do a dog walk about 4pm. Lets hope the clouds blow over.

  1. Well, if they were edible, I say 'all of the above'. Plus pickling them and freezing for later in the year. Free food is money towards the next trip.

    1. As I am not sure if they are edible I will pass on the free food. I might not be alive to go on another trip.

  2. *Looks* like a field mushroom, but you are wise to not try it unless 100% sure; the pink gills should turn brown as they mature. Nice photos - always interesting to see what nature presents us with! I used to buy huge bags of mushroom compost for the garden from a nearby mushroom farm for 50p; I'd leave them for a week, and was always rewarded with a big crop of free (and safe!) mushrooms :-)

  3. The mushrooms looked very nice but I know I would not have tried them. I love mushrooms normally. I did notice tonight although it has been sunny most of the day it certainly got darker earlier.

  4. I think that they are horse mushrooms. I pick them from a field near me. There are ways to identify them from their smell, colour when cut, etc by looking online. As you say though, best not to take a chance if you are not sure.

    2. I wouldn't eat (or even touch) an unknown mushroom, but if I thought they were horse mushrooms--which are supposed to be absolutely wonderful--I would take one to an expert to see if they could ID it for me. I can identify morels, and that's it. But I have a friend who knows 'em all!

  5. I agree with Mrs L - looks like a field mushroom. Why not contact Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and send a photo for ID? Seems a shame to lose out on a few free meals if it is totally edible. There's a phone number on their web site too.

  6. Not to sure about this..I dont think i would risk it.For me to enjoy a meal,I would have to be sure it is ok.xx

  7. I recently read that all mushrooms are edible, but some are only edible once. I think you have made the right call there.

  8. The thing is with fungi is that there is no middle ground - either it will be delicious or it will kill you! Oh dear me, aren't I a 'fun guy' to be with 😣

  9. I think it was Terry Pratchett who said you can eat any type of fungi once, but in some cases only once because you won't be here to repeat the experience! Arilx

  11. Lots of mushrooms this time of year where I live, both in the city and in the forests around. I would never take a chance myself on picking and eating as I don't have the knowledge and there are death caps around here (they can kill with one bite unfortunately; the most recent case was a toddler a few years ago who put one in his mouth that he found while playing in a local park before his parents could stop him). We do have a friend though who regularly brings us fresh picked wild chanterelles - so delicious!
