Hello and Good Morning. It is January the 1st 2018. I like the sound of that number, it has a nice ring to it. Now is the time to check in with your final walking miles for 2017. How did you do? Are you chuffed with yourself? Did you give it your best shot? Are you going to do better in 2018?
New members are invited to check in here, we like new starters. The format will be the same, please check in on the first of every month throughout the year to record your progress. If you miss the actual day, you can go back to the post at any time and add your comment.
I am having the day off today, good start eh! Ha ha. I am also reverting back to the 1000 miles target, so that gives me some days off throughout the year. So, 1000 divided by 12 is 83.3 miles per month. It helps to break it down, gives you a monthly target to aim for. Breaking it down further it's 2.74 miles per day.
You will have good months and bad months, depending on the weather, how you feel, your family circumstances, and the amount of free time you can give to the challenge. Don't forget, the more effort you put into it the better you will feel about yourself. There is nothing negative about walking, it's all positive, so no moaning about don't feel like it today. You know it makes sense to look after your body, and walking is a good way of doing that. I can't do it for you, so now it's up to you. Get up off your bum and do it.
I'm busy today, I shall be looking in later. Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

Happy New Year Ilona!
ReplyDeleteI'll walk on with you in 2018, aiming again for 1000 kilometres. And I can tell you I reached my goal for 2017, since I walked 1066 kilometres. I feel so very happy, healthy and strong. My pelvic troubles are history, tinnitus and balance became manageable, though are still here 24/7 but less debilitating, and seven years after my colorectal cancer surgery and trying to find out about the right diet and activities my digestive system finally is 'at ease' now. That's what this year's walking challenge has done for me.
Thank you so much for your inspiration Ilona!
With you as my wonderful inspirator I put up a walking challenge on my blog, especially for my fellow Dutch (wo)men who might be more able and comfortable reading, writing and walking in Dutch language and metric system.
Cheers!
By the way, I started 2018 with a 6 kilometre walk this morning.
Jeanneke.
Wow, what a fantastic result. Thanks for sharing your story, inspirational! And thank you to Ilona for keeping the results and tracking going. I’m going to try again this year. Happy New year. X
DeleteCount me in Rentintin from Croatia!
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona New Years Day is almost over here in Australia. It is 10.18 pm as I type this and I agree that 2018 has a nice ring to it. I would like to register my intent to join your walking club. I walk most mornings it's only usually heavy rain that prevents me from walking- plus all the things you mentioned. I look forward to registering my steps. I will use my Fitbit but it only records kilometres. I can easily convert them to miles though thanks to google. Lisa J. Tasmania, Australia.
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and all my fellow walkers.
My total for 2017 is 1180 miles which is a slight increase on the previous year.

Hi Ilona I'd like to join this year's challenge please! Thanks! x
ReplyDeleteWell, I said I would give it a go this year. I retired last year and it's taking a while to get a routine going. I've put weight on since I have all the time in the world to bake bread and cakes and of course eat them...so the walking challenge is on. I have calculated the distances between certain places so I'll be able to keep track also I will be interested to see my times from first day to the last. My dog is too old now to keep up to this pace but he will get his little walks. Today is -25 outside but hopefully it will warm up soon.
ReplyDeleteOk you've persuaded me... count me in as a new member of your walking group... time to stop being a sloth... As the neighbours had an all-nite party till 6.30am to celeb the NY, I may have to delay starting till tomorrow- 2.74 metres may be my limit of movement for today!!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Ilona. My total for last year was 1773. Looking forward to starting this years challenge.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration you give us its been a tough month this month a foot of snow meant I couldn't get out for a week not felt great for a few days but I have just about done my final 86 miles mostly made up of short walks round the block. May I say I have really enjoyed it and will be in again for next year .Thanks once again have a great year Kath K
ReplyDeleteHaving computer issues today...please make sure you don’t have multiple posts from me please :(.
ReplyDeleteFinal tally in 2017 was 1126! Yeah! Thank you again for this challenge and your wonderful blog. Happy New Year!
Hilogene in Az
I did 57 miles this month. A yearly total of 1157 unbelievable and wonderful. Dropped a couple of dress sizes as well as I went vegetarian and have loved it. Will do this all over again. Feeling good. Happy New Year Ilona and thanks do much for your support. xx
ReplyDeletePlease check me in as a new starter. My name is Jenette.
ReplyDeleteI am going to check in as anonymous aswell as my google account has been playing up and doesn’t show my comments. If it shows under Jenette I’ll stop commenting as anonymous as I having been fiddling with it and hopefully fixed it . Thank you.
Please add me to your new starters. My name is Jenette.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Ilona and walkers. 95 miles for Dec with a grand total for 2017 of 1108 miles, which averaged out at just over 3 miles a day , despite the ups and downs thru the year, which was a pleasant surprise. Finding it a little daunting starting at zero again but did it once so can do it again, just take each month as it comes. My base target for 2018 will be again average 3 miles as this seems doable but really want to push on to 100 miles a month and maybe even 1500 miles for the year if I can fit in some longer walks to bump up my daily routes. So thanks Ilona and all the others for the inspiration and motivation. Odette
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year😁
ReplyDeleteHow do you check the miles?
Where can i sign up?
Greetings
Hi. I have put you on the list. Please read the next post, I have mentioned how you can check your miles.
DeleteHappy New year. I started the year with 6 miles this morning. I am hoping to do the 1000 this year
ReplyDeleteHi Ellie-g here.
ReplyDeleteI read your blog everyday and love it.
Please put me down for 1200 miles (100 per month). I’m left work 2 months ago and am loving the freedom to please myself.
Please can you advise how to comment when the settings are not open. Many thanks and happy new year to all. Xx
You can comment any time, I am leaving the settings open. Please include your name in your comment.
DeleteI would like to join the walking challenge this year. I do have multiple sclerosis and thought since this will be a new challenge for me to go 500. Does that sound ok? If not I completely understand and will just do it as a personal challenge. Thank you so much for your blog I just love it!!!
ReplyDeleteTammy
That sounds fine, Rosie. Do as much as you can. xxx
DeletePlease can I join you this year. I think I am doing it anyway but I don't keep track. If my calculations are correct it is about 45 minutes walk per day?? Does that sound about right? Also do you allow artificial walking like on a cross trainer?
ReplyDelete50 minutes of fast walking on flat level ground without stopping will give you three miles. You can count all walking, cross trainer is fine.
DeleteI have never left a comment but have been reading yr blog for awhile. You have motivated me to start the challenge. But first got to work out a 3 mile route. I shall start tomorrow. L
ReplyDeleteGood for you. When you next comment can you please give yourself a name.
DeleteI need to join your group-if only virtually. Today though, I need to find an indoor place to walk or exercise a different way as we have -16 F which in Celsius is -26.667!
ReplyDeleteSam, if you can’t walk outside due to weather conditions, try looking up the many indoor walking videos that you can trot along to on YouTube. There’s an American lady who posts them and they are 1 mile, 2 miles, 3 miles - all conveniently measured for you. Natalie
DeleteThanks, Natalie. Great idea. I have some space at my office-a few routes people use, and we have an indoor track in our high school open to the public but I like the indoor walking video idea for my own home.
DeleteI would like to join in on your challenge please.
ReplyDeleteI have started today, completing 3 miles.
Anne
My walking for December 2017 was 93 miles. My grand total for 2017 was 863 miles. Natalie
ReplyDeleteYes, Ilona, I would like to join the walking group for 2018! Thank you so much for hosting it and encouraging the members. I’ve really enjoyed reading about other’s journeys so much and the kind comments when things have got hard for me. Best wishes to all past and new walkers. Natalie
ReplyDeleteI was sick a week so I didn't do extra but still walk everyday my regular amount. So I ended December with 75 miles. that puts me at 1,146 for 2017. I'm in for 2018. June 1st marks the 5 year mark of walking.every. single. day....Cheers!
ReplyDeleteTotal 1175, Sonja in NC. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Ilona. Checking-in for husband Wences on a very windy wet cold day in the north of Spain, no walking for him today incase he gets blown away... He managed 213 miles this month bringing his total to 2519. He is pleased and will be continuing with your walking group in 2018. Congrats to everyone who has taken part and been more active during 2017 than the year before. Happy New Year to all walkers.
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona. Can I join in please? Had a terrible year last year when I lost my husband. I have now retired and need to get myself fitter and look after myself. I have 2 young collies and have been for a four mile walk with them today. Like you would like to aim for 1000 miles this year. Things can only get better. Looking forward to the challenge.
ReplyDeleteWe’ll all walk with you Carole. Sending love. Bet two collies will love it-all those walks. X
DeleteYour collie dogs will keep you busy this year Carole, they are such fun & lively dogs aren't they-you will be so fit x
DeleteHi Illona. Can I join in please? Had a terrible year last year when I lost my husband and have decided I need to spend time this year looking after myself and getting fitter. ReplyDeleteHi Ilona, 99 miles in december bringing my total to 1089...did it..thank you and lets hope we all have a good 2018.xx
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Ilona. I started your challenge last spring but due to my husband's ill health combined with hospital visits I wasn't able to keep up. However as you say, new year and new start. Please can I join in? What do you recommend to keep track of the miles I walk? Many thanks x
ReplyDeleteHello Linda. I talked about checking miles on the next post, you have probably read it by now.

Having to report in every month encourage us to keep walking! Sue
Well done, Sue. Fantastic result.
DeleteHi Ilona. My miles for December was 31 and my total for the year 731. Not where I want to be but, I'm glad I stuck with it. Please sign me up for this new year. Thanks for providing a place to keep track. I enjoy reading your blog everyday. You are a great example to me.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Margaret in Maryland
Happy New Year, Ilona!! I'd like to join the walking fun. Thanks for your inpsiration!!! And "pep talks"
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona! All the best to you for 2018 :)

Sandy in the USA
Hi Ilona, I would like to join you if i can; not sure how I'll fit it in each day but going to try. Broke my leg three months ago so looking forward to regular walking again. Thanks for the incentive and the company...Camino here I come (I hope!). Happy 2018 to you and all the readers. Mary NZ
ReplyDeleteJust 27 miles, but I´m over 1000, which makes me very happy.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course I will continue walking in 2018!
Hilde
Let's all have a healthy, happy New Year, full of new dreams and new hopes, new experiences and lots of joys!
ReplyDeleteWith 70km in December, my total being 1103km, have successfully and proudly completed this year's challenge.Thank you Ilona.
Cheers to a new beginning!
Best wishes for 2018.
ReplyDeleteI guess you have a new member in your walking group :) . I started today with a 5,2 km walk. I usually walk once a week, between 15 and 25 km, but I intend do go walking on a more regular base. In Belgium we don't have as much nice places as you have in the UK, but I am sure I'll discove more of them by walking.
ReplyDeleteMarie-Paule (
Hi. If I am walking in an uninspiring area I switch off. My body goes into automatic pilot, and I take my brain off elsewhere with nice thoughts. Maybe planning a holiday or my next art project.
DeleteCongratulations everyone on your amazing totals. I am bottom of the class with only 608 but I did the best I could with the time I have available. Enjoyed it, stuck with it and am starting all over again for this year. Thanks for keeping this idea going Ilona.
ReplyDeleteJoining in this year......will get in as much as I can!
ReplyDeleteI am a newbie here, but I would love to join in the walking challenge. I hope to manage 3 miles a day, if my dog is agreeable, he doesn't like to walk in the rain or through puddles... Just as well I am made of sterner stuff.
ReplyDeleteMeant to say I want to join the 2018 challenge, please. Sonja NC
ReplyDeleteRegistering an embarrassing 13 miles for December and with an annual total of 792 miles, I have decided not to take part publicly this year but will record my mileages in my son's old exercise book as usual. I will also keep in touch with everyone's progress and continue to read your blog, Ilona, for inspiration! Thanks again for writing such a varied and interesting blog which I look forward to every day. Happy New Year! Vicki
ReplyDeleteStill a good total, Vickey.
DeleteI have been enjoying reading your blog the past several years. I would like to participate in your challenge.
ReplyDeleteMary G
Angela from Gloucestershire - I would love to join the challenge please. I used to walk and jog a lot but in recent years seem to have lost my mojo. Would very much appreciate the group's company to keep my motivation up.... thank you.
ReplyDeleteMy total for December was 53 (a very busy month!) and my years total is 1247, which I am very pleased with and wouldn't have done it without the support of you, Ilona, and the other walkers. I would certainly like to do the 2018 challenge
ReplyDeleteI have been following you for a couple of years and would love to join you and all the other walkers this year as you are all inspirational. Lisa - New South Wales Australia
ReplyDeleteJust like to add Ilona i would love to do the 2018 walking challenge again..thank you.
ReplyDelete2.74 miles per day makes it sound so much more do able Ilona, I think 1000 sounds a lot!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone
ReplyDeleteI rang up 926 miles for the year , not quite hit target , but had another chest infection in December that has taken some time to recover from . However it has been a really fun target to have and count me in for 2018 !
Thanks Ilona for your encouragement and support .
You did amazingly well.
DeleteJust realised I didn't actually ask to sign up for 2018.
ReplyDeletePlease may I join your list.
Sue
Hi, I'm late to the party, but I'd like to join too. Have pronounced couch-potato tendencies, so this will be a challenge!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year,
Susan from New Jersey, US
Hi Ilona..... I'm up for this :)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try it again, now that I've recovered from my foot injuries. Glad to be back!
ReplyDeleteGlad to have you back. Never give up.
DeleteI ended the year with around 730 miles, which wasn't too bad, as I only joined at the end of June. My goal for this year will be 1200 miles around 100 miles per month.
ReplyDeleteYou did very well. Go Gill.
DeleteI am so impressed with the international movement you have got going here Ilona. So, in December I actually started counting my occasional walking miles and realized that I really need to up my standard. I am a slow walker and too long gets a bit painful in the joints but I will resolve for 30 miles a month at least which will be more than I usually do. I do a bit of swimming and biking as well.
ReplyDeleteI would like to try the challenge -- I'm Jean from Winnipeg, My goal will be 1,000 for the year. How do we let you know the miles each month? jeanread@shaw.ca thank you. I always read your blog each morning.
ReplyDeleteHi. You send in a comment on the first of every month with the total of that month, then add it to the overall total. The last one being 1st January 2019, with the final total for the year.
DeleteAlthough mentioned in my comment, I can´t see husband Wences from Spain included in your 2018 walkers list. Please add him... he is on the look out in the Sales for some new trainers - maybe he thinks they will take him further :-)
ReplyDeleteOoops sorry. I will update the list before I go to bed. The new trainers will give him an extra boost ;o)
DeleteI am late with this, been away a lot and travelling during the holidays. So, here it is.. I managed 52.5 miles in december so my yearly total is 1019 miles. I think it is fantastic that I met the target. I will try to do more in 2018 but haven't decided on a figure yet.
ReplyDeleteWell done, you made it. It depends on how much time you can give it.
DeleteFinally got my Dec total from fitbit = 105 miles. Total for year = 1429. Pleased with that and will aim for more this year. Thanks for motivating us Ilona.
ReplyDeleteI'm late on the joining and late on the starting. Spent this whole first week down with the flu. Count me in though. 1000 miles in 2018
ReplyDeleteSorry to be late (again) with my checkin, but I was away for the Christmas break. I had a bit of a slower month in December, but still achieved my goal. I only joined the group for the last 4 months of the year, so my amended goal was 535km for the 4 months. With my December total of 84.36km I walked 602.66 km in 4 months. I'm very happy with this result. Thanks so much for the motivation, I see that your 2018 post is already up (as it should be of course) I'm planning to continue, the monthly checkin (even if late) is very motivating to get out there and keep walking. Of course it's summer in Australia and now I have to figure it in for a time when the dogs, and I, won't expire due to heat. Best wishes to all for their walking year.
ReplyDeleteHi, Sorry to be so late checking in. December was a bad month for walking in New Hampshire, with several snow and ice storms and wind chills below zero Farenheit. My total since March 5 is 330 miles, so I didn't make my goal of 500 miles. I am going to set the same goal again for 2018 and hope to beat it as I will have twelve months instead of ten. Thanks again for doing this, Ilona!
ReplyDelete
