Here is a good site for those who want to do long distance walking.
There is some good information here on the Ordnance Survey web site, about planning a route.
If you are walking in London, there is information on the London Transport site about where to walk.
I'm sorry, I don't have any sites for the rest of the world, try Gooogling 'walking in your area/town'
Now it's your turn to continue writing, the sun is shining and I'm off for a walk. Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

Hi there Ilona, Have completed 80.95 miles, not as much as usual, but more than I thought I had done. I use a fitness band to monitor, and have logged in 130.27 klm in measured steps for January. Trying to get back to doing my daily walk,as well as a 45 minute aqua aerobics class three times a week. Your walking group together with your daily blog is exactly the motivation I need. Thank you very much. Joy from Victoria Australia.
ReplyDeleteI am claiming 91 miles as I am doing this on a four weekly basis, it works better with my diary and gives me some spare to catch up if I fall behind. One 11 mike cycle ride, the rest were proper walks or jogs. It’s been horrendously wet and cold in Somerset, every time I go out I have to dry, clean and then polish my shoes/boots. I cannot walk in wellies, there is not enough support but they are great in the garden.
ReplyDeleteAll the best
Charles
Miles walked in January: 117. Most walks are between 3 and 5 miles, some days less.
ReplyDeleteI am delighted to have achieved that, given that the ground around here is so soggy and slippery. Without having a target to aim for I know I would have stayed indoors reading, sewing, crafting, anything but getting out there and walking. Toby, my rescue dog came with lots of problems - hates roads, cars, exercise, gunshots, tractors and getting his feet wet - walking him involved walking the same, safe, routes everyday and believe me, it is tedious trying to do 3 miles a day like that - so I began pushing him to extend his safe zones. Each day I pushed a little bit harder and now he walks five miles a day quite happily, comes exploring 'new'pathways and tracks, and has a brilliant time. We are both happy and a little bit fitter. We walk through fields, old railway tracks, bridle paths, woodland, plus a little road walking and we walk whatever the weather, even if it is only a mile. Sorry it has turned into such a long comment, but thank you for the challenge.
Hi Ilona. My total for this month is 155. Not quite as much as I would have liked due to quite a few snow days. Unusual but not unheard of here in Atlanta. Hopefully it will warm up soon and I can get out more this month. Take care. Amanda in Atlanta.
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona, I have walked 138 kilometres in January!
ReplyDeleteYou're a fantastic inspirator; thank you again for the enjoyable and healthy challenge!
Cheers,
Jeanneke.
Thank you for coming along. Enjoy your walk.
DeleteI walked 44.4 miles in January. This is pretty far short of where I want to be. I have struggled with painful foot problems, very cold weather, and some days just a lack of interest. Glad to have a fresh start with a new month.
ReplyDeleteMargaret in Maryland
Every day is a fresh new start, do your best.
DeleteI was hampered by the weather and time to get to indoor places, so my walking is a measly 39.4 miles. With each day closer to spring and not having to deal with ice, I should pick up steam. My goal is 600 for the year, plus other types of exercise.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to have a goal, Sam. Best of luck.
Delete74 miles for January ......my aim is to avoid injury and keep to a regular daily amount of mileage . I was a bit over enthusiastic at times last year and ended up with a knee problem . I will be delighted if I reach 1,000 miles by Dec 31st 2018 ,
ReplyDeleteCheers Shelly
I will be delighted for you as well. Good luck.
DeleteHi Ilona. I missed the original sign up for the walking challenge but I hope I can still join in. I've managed 81 miles for January. Thankfully the weather has been pretty good here so it's been a pleasure to get out. I'm looking forward to it becoming less muddy underfoot. X
ReplyDeleteYes, you are welcome to join in, the more the merrier.
DeleteHi Ilona and all the other happy walking group members,
ReplyDeleteI did 60 miles in January. I am just counting the actual separate walks I take, but have now added going to the gym each weekday (hopefully) so my walking miles may be less than last year. Ilona, thank you again for your blog and creating this group! I know there are other walking groups and sites, but your blog was the one that changed my life! I always feel supported here, versus getting competitive where I get depressed that I can’t do what others do. Thank you again,
For those in colder climates (I live in Arizona), congratulations to whatever miles over one mile that you did :). And for newcomers, even if you get out 10 minutes a day, it is hugely important and will turn into a great habit. I started walking a bit over three years ago, my first goal was 1 mile a day, and it was a big struggle. Last year I did over 1000 miles! And I have lost 30 pounds without any special diets...just adding walking slowly dropped a pound a month off of me!
Good luck to everyone this year, and welcome to any new people!
Well done. It is amazing how the weight sneaks up on us. Not so easy to shift it.
DeleteWe had so much rain and soggy grounds, I could mostly only walk on the road between our village and the next one. So I am quite happy to have managed 72 miles in January.
ReplyDeleteHilde in Germany
I managed 114.75 miles and lost 2.5 lbs.
ReplyDeleteI have walked 140 miles for january. Its been cold, snowy and icy. I walk everyday outdoors and some days it has been really tough. I have had to split my walks in half. I also went to my first spin class with my daughter, I am looking forward to spring!
ReplyDeleteI only managed 61 miles. I have had the flu and really been too poorly to walk this past fortnight... I will do much better next month
ReplyDeleteHi. Have only done about 20 miles. Had a nasty cold and cough. Hope to do better next month. Thank u for doing this. L
ReplyDeleteA great start!
ReplyDeleteI walked 191.01 miles as measured by my tracker.
I also lost 9lbs.
well done Donna!
DeleteHi can I join in too please Ilona?
ReplyDeleteThis is my 4th year of doing the 1000 mile challenge and I think it's such a great motivator. Last year I just made it to 1000 miles on the 31st of December. I only count outdoor "boots on" miles and usually do short walks between 1.5 and 4 miles locally every day that I'm not at work. Plus I go out with a walking group once a week. Their average distance is shorter in the winter...about 7 or 8 miles. In the summer it's 10 or 11 miles.
I managed 75 miles in January, which is short of target. I must try harder in February.
Only 54 this month due to snow don't do slippy walking and not feeling great. Done 7 miles today so a good start for Feb very windy today so blew me round good luck every one Kath K
ReplyDeleteHellfire Donna 😳
ReplyDeleteI don’t stand a chance.
I’ve done 43 miles - my goal is to do more than that next time.
Walking round the streets by my house - hopefully the weather will be better and I can get going more.
Regards
Jenette
Good morning Ilona from the USA :) I walked 104 miles in January so I'm feeling quite chuffed with that. I feel as though my daily walks are becoming a routine and think "What would Ilona say?" on those days when I'm making excuses not to do it so YOU are my inspiration - Thank You!
ReplyDeleteI am aiming for better health, better diet and weight loss. I started on the weight loss back in April 2017 after receiving dubious blood test results and have now lost 50 pounds. I am hoping that my health issues are directly related to my obesity and that said issues will disappear when I reach my goal weight of 140 pounds. I will let you all know! My starting weight was 235 pounds and is now 185 pounds as of today. I have 45 pounds to go.
I have a couple of good 6 mile walks that I do during the week, both in nature preserves. Tuesday and Thursday are with friends, the weekend with my husband and the rest of the time I use my treadmill, which I LOVE. I put on earbuds and listen to my favorite music or I drag the treadmill over to the TV and watch a movie while I walk 6 miles! We usually have nice sunny weather with blue skies here in the California desert so there's an incentive to get out and off my duff. Walking is making me feel so much better health wise plus I'm sleeping better at night too. So far so good!
Wow, I see some great results there in the comments from other participants - good job everyone.
Sandy/USA
Hi Ilona
ReplyDeleteI completed 110 miles in January.
Hazel Dxb
hi there! a pathetic 16.1 miles by me. not a tremendous start but better than nothing which has been my previous record! fingers crossed the snow stays away so we can all get out in feb.
ReplyDeletePrevious record 😂😂😂love it x
DeleteAlso liked the previous record comment :)! I hope the weather is kind to you this month.
DeleteBeen very icy and -25 here all month, so my miles reflect this situation but only 20 miles walked but does snow shovelling count...haha..when the weather warms up should get more in. I have consciously been eating better and moving more. Love the blog and keep up the good work, made some chicken soup, cookies and beef roulade today. ps: with the price of vegetables here ( ontario ) have bought more frozen ones, brussels sprouts today. Have a good day and love to the cats from my Ceasar.
ReplyDeleteHi All....Just 48 miles for me but that doesn't include a day in Manchester where I walked everywhere...so I'll include walks like that from this month. I was aiming for more, but sickness and cold weather/snow put pay to that. I try and walk a mile to and a mile from work each day; pavements, fairly flat, and then top this up with 9+ miles walked with a friend after work (3 x 3 or 4 miles per week mostly paved and very hilly ) plus extra on Saturday and Sunday (either city walking, canals, or local hills/farmland (mud permitting). I work in a contact centre so once I've sat down, aside from comfort breaks, I don't move out of my chair for around 6 hours so this 1000 miles is really important for me. Thank you Ilona for organising and thank you fellow walkers for the shared motivation x
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona, I walked 153 km, that must be something like 95 miles. The challenge really works for me. It made me go out on rainy days ;) . Thank you for inspiring us.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice evening
Marie-Paule
100 miles for January. Odette
ReplyDeleteHello Ilona and Fellow Walkers!! I'm reporting only 52 km for January. I'm in Canada and have had some very cold temperatures (-20's) plus lots of snow and ice to contend with but it's typical for winter here. I would like to do 1000 km by the end of 2018 as I expect to be able to get a lot more km's done once the weather improves. That's the plan, anyway. Cheers, Nanny Anny in Canada
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona and everyone!!! I have completed 34 miles. I did set my yearly goal to 500. In the next few weeks we should hopefully be seeing a break in the weather in our neck of the woods in US.
ReplyDeleteHello Ilona. I hope you have a wonderful year!
ReplyDeleteWe have walked 103 miles this month. Thanks for all your encouragement.
Hope you had a lovely walk in the sunshine today. Sue
45 miles for me this month Ilona. It isn't much but I can't seem to increase it .Some days I do walk a bit further but I've mislayed my pedometer.I did measure my route once & it is 1 & a half miles each day & it takes approx 40 minutes if I don't stop or talk to anyone. It is very muddy & deep puddles for lovely Lily to charge through splashing in & to lay in.Mop is half dipped in mud by the end of the walk & even top dog has a quick swill down later. It is great though & the snowdrops are out & catkins, busy squirrels & birds singing.Thouroughly enjoy it but can't seem to do more as my legs go wibbly wobbly & I look drunk staggering x
ReplyDeleteHello, I managed 42 miles in January. Life got in the way, Mother in hospital and the weather was not very co-operative, which is par for the course for a Canadian Winter. Excuses...I know. Hopefully February will show a big improvement.
ReplyDeletePatricia in Canada.
Hello Ilona, my target was 80 miles and I managed 80.5 - so did it just by the skin of my teeth! i thought I would prefer to jog my miles, but actually finding it is the walking I am enjoying most. Just love stretching out the ol'legs and swinging the arms and feeling the weather hit me....and wow! January has had its challenges😀
ReplyDeletehello walkers :)
ReplyDeleteI walked 112 kms/ 69.6 miles in January. Hubby and I walk for an hour at 5.30am a few days a week. When we leave its dark and the sun comes up just before we get home. I love mornings and have really enjoyed it. Its a great start to the day and we get time to just chat and catch up while we are out. I'm gradually working up to walking every day, just have to juggle a few injuries and hoping to walk 1000 miles this year.
109miles this month. Thanks for the inspiration
ReplyDeleteHello. I have managed 40 miles this month. Hope to do better, as hopefully the weather improves. Also used the cross trainer when the weather was to awful to walk outdoors.
ReplyDeleteFrom Joanne (Cumbria)
Hello, this month is 162km or 100 miles which i am really happy with as I was laid up for two weeks after an operation. It did help that I had 10 days holidays by the beach in Northern NSW with world heritage listed natinal parks. Great to see how well everyone is doing. Lisa NSW Australia.
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona and fellow walkers. I have done 276 kilometres or 171.697 miles. My Westie Jock and I walk for an hour and 20 minutes most days before I head off to work. I find if I do my morning walk I reach my goal of 10 000 steps a day by about 8.15 am as I walk from where I park my car to my place of work. Well done absolutely every one! Lisa, Tasmania, Australia.
ReplyDeleteHello, Ilona and fellow walkers! I have started this year off with 58 miles. I've had a really light battle with the flu recently. I'm glad to say that is behind me. Thank you for the inspiration, Ilona!!! You're the bomb!;)
ReplyDeleteHello Ilona & walkers..90 miles for Jan 2018, Sonja from North Carolina.
ReplyDeleteHello Ilona and all the other Walkers.
ReplyDeleteMy tally for the month of January is 103.4 Miles. Keep up the motivation, it is greatly appreciated.
Thank You, Andrew.
Hello from New Hampshire, USA. I think I'm setting the record low this month with 15.25 miles. Snow, ice, and a bad cold that kept me on the sofa. Still, it's a start towards my goal of 5oo miles. Well done to all! Here's to good health and stamina in 2018!
ReplyDeleteThis month I walked 108 miles. My husband says that total is cheating, because I am wearing a fitness tracker and that counts walking in the home, and at work. I am a nurse, and leave the house at 6, return about 8:30 14hr later; sometimes am and sometimes pm. It seems like I need to sleep to perform well at work, so I don't walk for the purpose of exercise on the days I work. Today, I walked 3.4 miles at work. But I counted them.
ReplyDeleteHello Ilona and fellow walkers. I managed to walk 132 miles in January. My miles are mostly from my job but I do go for walks around my neighborhood occasionally. I hope to do better in February. Sendee in Colorado
ReplyDeleteHi everyone!
ReplyDeleteIn January I walked 34.65 kms (21.5 miles). A very slow start but I do most of my walking to/from work and I was on holidays for the first 2 weeks -- relaxing was a higher priority!
My goal is to walk 500 kms, so I just need to increase slightly to 43kms per month from now on, and I'll get there!
Happy walking from Katie (apartmentcat) in Melbourne, Australia.
xx
Just checking in again I tried yesterday with google but it never got posted. I did 52 mikes which I was pleased with for this time last year I was not sure whether I would still be here but here I am in a new home and getting a lot better. Thank you Ilona for the inspiration of going for a short walk each day. Hope to do a bit more next month. Have a good weekend everyone sun is shining where I am. Hazel c uk
ReplyDeleteWe had a beautiful weather at the end of January here in Greece. It is actually the time of the year we call "alkyonides" days during which there's a period of sunny days with clear blue skies and warm temperatures.
ReplyDeleteWould you be interested in reading a little something about them and the myth behind them?
According to the Greek Mythology, Alcyone was daughter of Aeolus, god of the winds. She was living on the coast with her husband Ceyx. They were so in love and so happy that sometimes they used to think of them as Zeus and Hera. For their profanity, Zeus transformed Ceyx into a vulture. Alcyone who didn’t have any idea what had happened to her husband, was running in panic trying to find him. The gods of Olympus when they realized how badly Alcyone was feeling, they transformed her into a sea bird, known as halkyon (kingfisher).
But the distress of Alcyone had no end. In contrary with the other birds which give birth in spring, Alcyone has to do it during the winter. One more time the gods felt sorry and Zeus allowed the sun to shine brightly to warm up the kingfishers to incubate their eggs. That’s why we still call these warm, sunny days of January, Alcyonides days.
So in January I managed to walk my regular 90 km. My goal this year is to make it 100km every month.
Have a nice month everyone!
Greeting from cold wet north of Spain. I´m checking in for husband Wences who enjoys a short walk in the morning and a long one in the afternoon. Very inhospitable weather here this month but he has managed 231 miles. He takes note of the kilometres before setting out and on his return - he doesn´t count distances walked around the house or to the corner shop etc. Great distances walked by all. roll on spring.
ReplyDelete65 miles for me. Natalie
ReplyDeleteI try to do three miles a day so more or less 21 miles per week. I try to do more at the weekend so average 25 miles per week.I find it less daunting to break it into small chunks!!
ReplyDeleteChecking in Ilona, 99 miles in January and well done to everyone.
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona. Managed 88 miles this month. Usually walk round the local country park with the dogs but it has been so muddy. I have spent half the month mopping the floor after them. Can’t wait for a bit of good weather.
ReplyDeleteI've only managed 45 miles this month. The weather here has been atrocious on occasions and also due to an accident at home I have concussion, so I couldn't make the total I wanted to. I am committed to carrying on though and will do what I can.
ReplyDeleteOnly 12 miles this month, due to having bronchitis, but at least I got started. No looking back!
ReplyDelete75 miles for january 2018, I think that is a healthy start to the year. It's great to see people commenting from all over the world. We are part of a movement to move!
ReplyDeleteHi Ilona 33 miles for me this month. Hoping to get out more when the weather is warmer but am trying to incorporate walking into my routine - walking to places to make appointments rather than using the phone etc. Might sign up to a sponsored walk to keep me motivated! Xx
ReplyDeleteWell done everyone. Our World Wide Walking Group is growing. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. Don't forget February is a short month, so lets give it some more welly.
ReplyDeleteHello, Ilona and all, a late check in from me, I did pretty well in January walking 151 km. February seems to be slipping away already! I do enjoy the group motivation.
ReplyDelete
