Saved from the tip, a new lease of life

Hello. I bet you are wondering if I got anything else out of the skip. I surely did. I had a chat with the owner of the house, they are downsizing and moving to a small bungalow. The skip has cost them £200, I think they could have saved that by getting a charity to come in and take the bulk of it, and then taking the rest to the tip in their car.
There is too much stuff for me to take, so I am pleased that other people are taking things as well. As long as it can be used by someone it doesn't matter who gets it. Here are some things which I had.
A nice coffee table, will keep it for a while and might find a use for it, but might give it away.

Fancy a game of footie. Charity shop for this I think.

Children's toys. Charity shop for the big ones, cat stall for the small ones.

Dyson, didn't know if this would work, plugged it in, and it does. Amazing. Needs cleaning, it's filthy. Will keep this as a spare, but will give it to a family member if anyone needs one.
Small items can be sold on our cat stall.

Two bags of plastic balls, too bulky to take to a show in the car, will give them away.

This can be folded up and sold on our stall. Child size.
A double sleeping bag, washed and in good condition. I don't need it so I will look for someone who does. It could be made into dog beds.
There was a mucky pair of boots in the skip, I didn't want them but I said to the man, I always wear boots because I have bunions. He went in the house and came out with three pairs of trainers, in my size, and they fit a treat, so I will keep them.

Puzzles and games for the cat stall.
Set of curtains with a pelmet, and matching double duvet cover and pillowcases. The curtains are new and now hang in my front window. The bedding is washed and will be sold on the cat stall.
Anything not sold will go to a charity shop. We don't sell at any events over the winter, except a Christmas Market in November. We don't like to keep stuff for too long and will pass it on. People always give us more stuff in the spring when we start again.

I've got to go to the dentist in the morning, but I will be checking the skip when I come back.

There is great excitement in the village, talk of the two Lancaster Bombers flying right over us on Saturday. It has been arranged because one of our residents played a big part in it's operations during the war. Oooh can't wait. I will be there with my camera.

Toodle pip.

  2. I'm a little lost on sine words, Ilona....a pelmet?, the cat stall? Those "trainers" (tennis shoes) look like they are great shape. Nice finds.

    1. Hello Linda, as others have said. A pelmet is like a very short curtain which goes across the top of the window to hide the hooks on the main curtain. Cat stall, we go to events and sell things. We sometimes take our own tables, or sometimes they are provided. Yes, trainers are sports shoes.

  3. How nice that you can use so much of your find! We have a nice little consignment shop and a charity shop, so there's no reason to throw much away here! Love it!

  4. I love your attitude, Ilona! Take it, find a good home for it, think about where's best, never just toss anything. I do this, too, and I love it. A pelmet, Linda, is a valance. I think the cat stall is the table they take at events to sell from to support their animal rescue. I grew up in the UK, and I'm still somewhat bilingual!

  5. Wow, so much good stuff you saved from the landfill. The coffee table is beautiful.

  6. Well, we couldn't believe all the great stuff you managed to save. I kept scrolling down through the pics and thought a lot of the items were super. Loved the coffee table and what about those trainers happening to be in your size!
Can't wait to see the Hurricane photos, lucky you getting to see them in the air.

  8. Linda Kay, a pelmet would be a valance, the cat stall is the booth Ilona and a friend run where they sell things to raise money for the cat rescue. Trainers are indeed tennis shoes. I'm American but watch so many Brit shows and read Brit books that I have become bilingual I think.

  10. What a fantastic haul! And I think one of the best sentences in your post is that other people are also raiding the skip. It's good to hear that more people are realising how daft it is for good stuff to go to landfill.

  11. Well done for rescuing so much! I suspect the skip was just easier than sorting stuff for charity. The new owners will love all your rescued stuff!

  12. Amazing finds. Love the coffee table, that would look nice sanded back and painted.

  13. Amazing what people throw away! That coffee table looks ripe for a makeover xx

  14. What a crime to be chucking all these things in a skip and how lucky that you were able to rescue them.

  15. What a haul! The problem of living out in the countryside is that there is never a skip anywhere

  16. What a shame all that was being thrown away to land fill. : ( And paying £200 for the priviledge!! Pleased you managed to rescue the items and can benefit, whether it's you or someone else, from them. : )

  17. I can't believe my eyes! That coffee table is beautiful, I had already shabby chic-ed it in my mind but looking again it is fine as it is. They must have an empty skip by now! Hope you make loads of money for the cats.

  18. Good grief...Pandora's box!! We need a national campaign about cutting waste...I thought most people were educated about recycling now but evidently not. Well done you and good luck at the dentist!

  19. I can't believe they were throwing so much stuff in the skip! What a waste. Well done you for rehoming things. I hope you manage to make a few pennies for the cats.

  21. I'm surprised they are throwing things away. My charity warehouse does home collections. You had some useful items there. :)

  23. Eagle eyed Ilona strikes again! Well done! Especially as you probably won't need to buy any new or second hand trainers for years! x

  24. Can't believe that all this and more was being thrown away, what a sad indictment of today's society, with a little effort it could have been rehomed via charity shops or freecycle. Good job you & others rescued much of the stuff. Nice earner for your charity & good value for the customers too, Best wishes, Vee x

  25. What a shame they didn't think in the first place to phone a local charity, so much stuff that could have been lost to landfill AND it's cost them money!! Well done to you and any other folks that are making use of all these lovely items.

  26. Wow so glad you rescued all that stuff, such useful things, would have been a terrible waste if it went to landfill. Also will help the cats out too. Well done hunny x

  27. Lots of good stuff in the tip.....so glad you can make use of it.
    Three pairs of trainers....lucky you!

  28. Eye opening really on what people throw away..A shame, especially like you say they paid £200 for a skip. So pleased you managed to rescue that stuff and that someone, whether you or others, will benefit : ) How fab to see the war planes. I'd well up as they went over Louise

  29. This is great for you, but honestly it makes me steam!! Why would anybody throw things like this away when there are charity shops a'plenty, Freecycle, etc. It is criminal. Well, actually it isn't, but it flipping well should be!! I recently found some fabulous crockery in a skip at Ipswich docks. A restaurant was closing and they had thrown a lot of very good quality white plates and bowls into a skip outside. We were on foot so chose 6 nice plates and 12 bowls, by which time a load of other people had realised the treasures and were helping themselves and even knocking on the restaurant door to see what else they were chucking out. This is so much better than dumping stuff when there are so many people in desperate need. It makes me want to cry.

  30. That is a beautiful coffee table! It's a little like Christmas !

  31. Good grief, Ilona, it must seem like Christmas! What wonderful finds, the cat stall should make loads of cash from the small stuff and well done for passing other stuff to the CS. If only the couple had known....you could have saved them the price of the skip! Do let us know what else you find please, it's very exciting!

  32. Wow, what great finds. Doesn't it give you a buzz when you get something for nothing. I am sure the things you decide not to keep will be gratefully received by someone in need.
Like you, I love cats and would love to join in your fund raising but I live on the other side of the world.
Friends of ours own and run a cat hostel (cattery) and as my husband and I have experience of running our own dog boarding kennels before we retired we babysit the cattery whenever our friends need a holiday or short break. Looking after cats is definitely easier than looking after dogs, so quiet for example.

  33. What finds! But how amazing they were just throwing away so much stuff! You don't see many skips like that here in France - but I am kicking myself over a skip I saw in Liverpool city centre...It was full of art equipment & I decided to go back and have a rummage once I'd had my lunch - and I FORGOT TO GO! Grr.

  34. Great skip dipping. The two lancasters flew over my house two Sundays ago!

  35. I hope you will post some pictures of the Lancasters! I live in Texas, but I "visited" the Canadian Lancaster at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in 2002. They had just started on the restoration when we were there and the crew that was working on it dragged us over for a cheering session because they got one wheel to raise. It's very exciting to know that she's out there flying again. :)

  37. Incredible stuff you found in that skip! The only ones I see are always full of ripped-out plasterboard and suchlike. Hope your dentist visit goes ok; it's amazing what they can do now when work is needed, just a shame it is also at amazing prices!
