Tree hugger

This tree is magnificent. It was planted in the wrong place and has grown far too big for the plot. Lumps have been chopped from the top as the branches overhang the road. Despite the butchery that has taken place it stands tall and proud.
Too big to get the whole thing on one photo.
Look at the size of the trunk, it reminds me of an elephants foot.
If three adults held hands they might be able to do a group hug around it's girth.
There is a preservation  order on it so hopefully it will be a landmark in the village for a long time.

Catch ya tomorrow. Toodle pip.   ilona

  1. Oh I am happy there is a preservation order on it, it is a grand old tree. Old trees could tell such tales and look wise to me.

    1. Someone said on our village page that it was already big when they moved here, 61 years ago. I reckon it could be almost 100.

    1. The bark has the texture of an elephants skin. It's wonderful.

  3. We are one of the last places to have lots of Elm trees. Dutch Elm disease has killed off most of the in other parts of the country. Recently though I have noticed lots of them being felled so obviously the disease is still going strong.
I hate to see any tree cut down after spending years and years standing there in all weathers.
As you may see, I love trees.

    1. I hate to see any trees cut down. When you think that the earth, and the elements have nurtured them for many years, they deserve a long life.

  4. I love trees, infact anything to do with nature. But last November ,a huge one that was in next doors garden was destroying my house.I had already had to have ridge tiles replaced, because it was growing over my roof. Then it started lifting my garden slabs up at a angle..plus taking my fence up at the same time.I was having dogs chasing my cats under the fence because the roots had lifted it up at least 18 inches from the ground. The slabs.were lifted so high you could just lift them up and took your life in your hands every time I tried to hang my washing out.As my house is our own, bought years ago and next door council,I had to spend a year trying to get the council down to see how dangerous the situation was.Eventually, they agreed that it was their responsibility and they took the tree down, removed the roots as well because every part of it was ruining my property with roots starting to grow under my house. It broke my heart to see it go because it used to be full of birds, singing every morning.Where I live it was farmland up until 1970 and the trees were left with the houses built around them. But trees growing right next to houses can do loads of damage with their roots.xx
