There was a notice come up on our village page about a Boot Sale in a neighbouring village, so I went to have a look today. More out of curiosity than to buy something. It was like what you would call a garage sale. The sellers set tables up outside their own house and the browsers either walked around or drove their car to each location in turn.
There was a map but I didn't need one. I know the village well, I used to deliver the Parish Newsletters there. It started at 10am but I didn't notice the advert until gone 12 o clock, so I was a little bit late arriving.
Everyone was very friendly, nice to have a chat with a few people. It was due to finish at 4pm, but I noticed that some were packing up early. I bought a few small items for a grand total of £1.40. Some of them were charity stalls. The notices said everything is free, a donation would be welcome.
This is a fairly new thing round here, a bigger village is doing one in a couple of weeks time. It's a good way to pass things on which are no longer wanted. A good opportunity of getting some walking in as well. A quick look at the church while I was there.
Billy was waiting with his harness on when I got back. He really looks forward to his walks. I bought him a teddy to add to his collection, only 10p.

The municipality where I live prohibits "garage sales" (someone years ago decided the area was too posh for them, sadly), except once a year there is a Saturday set aside in late spring where they are permitted. It's quite the community event and it attracts thousands of bargain hunters and curiosty seekers from neighbouring areas as well. There can be dozens and dozens of individual sales, many raising money for charity also. It was cancelled last year and I believe has been cancelled again for this year. Perhaps next year it will be back.

DeleteMy area has just started table top Tuesday where residents can put a table outside with things they no longer want all Free to collected.

DeleteA village local to me,has done this for quite a few years now.The maps they supplied were to pin point in the village,where the houses were who were joining in.I have bagged my self a few bargains in the past.But last year,of course it wasnt on and the previous year it rained hard all day,so people were having to rush all their stuff back in doors to save it getting ruined.Im not sure if it will happen this year because it does attract alot of folk.I do hope so though,because it is a lovely afternoon out!xx
ReplyDeleteWe really need these sales to happen. All part of the green revolution being planned. Recycle second hand, don't buy new unless there is no other option.
DeleteIt is like history repeating its self!.All these young uns telling us what we should do yet our parents and grandparents lived like this with no waste.Every thing mended,re used,no plastic bags then..even when I was a kid!.We passed down our clothes,shoes,toys to be used again and again.xx
DeleteWhen we lived in Hull the children used to set up tables or sometimes a blanket at the end of the streets on Holderness rd. ( no through traffic ones) in the school holidays and sell their toys and ornaments.Bit of pocket money.Very popular with all of the shoppers on that main road.And of course there were quite a few charity shops too.
ReplyDeleteI remember doing something similar as a kid growing up on a council estate. I used to set up shop in the garden.
DeleteOur area is considered quite 'posh' but the people here are great, loads of 'arty' types there's lots of creativity around. Last year one of the streets had a doorstep sale, most of the residents joined in and there were some fabulous things on offer as well as the usual bits and bobs. There's a lot of interest here in recycling and up cycling and echo-friendly projects. It's a nice place to live. I do miss the big car boot sales, though. Hopefully they'll be back soon as the situation in Wales is looking fairly good. Fingers crossed! 🙂
