How awful ;-( (edited)

The Church of England decided this week to cover the interior of the oldest cathedral in England in graffiti in order to represent the voices of “marginalised communities.” The Very Rev David Monteith, Dean of Canterbury, said: “There is a rawness which is magnified by the graffiti style, which is disruptive. It is unfiltered and not sanitised.” “This exhibition intentionally builds bridges between cultures, styles and genres and allows us to receive the gifts of younger people who have much to say.”

Here is a link to the Canterbury Cathedral web site.

Our church in Scunthorpe town centre is an art gallery. It is no longer a church for worshiping. Even so, our exhibitions are not daubed all over the walls graffiti style.
This is something I do not want to see inside a sacred building. Who thought this is a good idea? Article and comments in The Daily Mail.

'Sacrilegious' graffiti exhibition makes Canterbury cathedral 'look like an underground car park in Peckham' say appalled worshippers'

Makes you wonder what comes next.

Thanks for popping in. Toodle pip.   ilona

EDIT

The oldest cathedral in England, Canterbury Cathedral, established in 597 AD by St. Augustine. It was founded to reintroduce Christianity to the Anglo-Saxons. Now, done up like this by a "Modern artist" who doesn't know what gender they are. Nothing is sacred!

These Cathedrals are sacred places to pray. We should honor the decades if not generations of work and dedication to make these beautiful peaceful places to worship. These Churche are a reminder of our place in time. They are part of our history and future. allowing anyone to deface any church or Cathedral is sickening and disrespectful to to our past and the future.

They're stickers you idiot and the questions they ask are what congregants want to know the answers to. Obviously they're trying to appeal to a certain group of youngsters that traditionally vandalise everything.

  1. It's not just a local church, it's a site that is internationally known.

To me it's a desecration. People need to get involved in their local churches. Craft groups, social mornings, they don't demand you attend services.

    1. Churches can be used for a lots of other activities aimed at bringing communities together. Our church, as with most churches, have amazing acoustics. They have a weekly coffee and chat morning.

  2. I am glad you posted about this, I have been posting about this disgusting installation on X and Truth Social. The Dean is morally bankrupt. Seeing this will not lead me to worship. Awful. I understand it will be removed in a few months (hope before Christmas). The damage is done though.

    1. Well if they did it to garner publicity for the building, it certainly worked. I can't see many comments in favour of it though. I think it looks ghastly.

  3. It seems to me that the Christian communites do all they can to loose their faithful members.
Can you imagine this kind of "art" in a mosque?

    1. I'm all for moving with the times, but churches are places of deep rooted religion and shouldn't be vandalised like this.

  4. This, like so many other actions of the C of E hierarchy, speaks volumes about the capture of what should be a strong moral and Christian body by woke, "progressive" irreligious nonenities totally devoid of any respect for the past teachings of the church. Captured by and in thrall to the latest passing idiotic nonsense (like their £100million slavery reparations fund). I am not religious, but I despair of the C of E abandoning what should be it's primary, even only, mission - Christian teaching.

    1. The rot is creeping in from the top, Will. I don't follow any particular religion, but I remember assembly every morning at school. We said the Lords Prayer, we sang the hymns, and recited a few simple words before every meal. For what we are about to receive may the Lord make us truly thankful. It is very upsetting to watch the destruction of Christianity.

  5. I think it is awful. It is a house of God. What on earth were they thinking? this is typical leftist wokeism at its very worst. I have no idea what has happened to the Church of England - they ordained women priests, let them become bishops and have even appointed a female Archbishop of Canterbury. You just wait, the next thing is they will be allowing same sex marriage, which is clearly against the teachings in the bible.

Good for you for posting about this.

    1. I will continue to speak up against the wanton destruction of Christianity and our places of worship. To destroy our history and heritage is all happening by design.

    2. It is awful. We are being invaded. In some areas there are more mosques than churches. I don’t understand why people can’t see it - these woke lefties are pushing an agenda to annihilate decent law abiding traditional Britain. You can’t even fly the flag of St George without being called a racist. I am not a racist I just want my country back.

Farage is right it is going to take decades to bring things back. And don’t get be going about teachers - when I was a kid girls were girls and boys were boys - none of this pick whatever gender you fancy nonsense.

  6. They are temporary stickers...which will be gone in a couple of months...but they look to be voicing questions that many don't wish to hear or answer. Perhaps those that protest most are the ones that should be listening and thinking about the lives of other people more...in a christian manner

  7. Hi Ilona, thanks for highlighting this allowed vandalism of a beautiful and historically important church, what on heaven and earth were they thinking…foolish behaviour that proves what? That they are in touch with the younger generation? I feel they have missed the mark, if that was their intention. I was bought up a catholic (However I don’t align myself with any religion now) and truly believe there must be something bigger than us. I don’t feel this is a way to encourage faith.

    1. The 'something bigger than us', are those who wish to destroy all human life as we know it. The artist is a person who doesn't align with either male of female. Someone must have paid them, and I think some of us can guess who that is.

  8. This is shocking! Temporary or not, this is a holy place and should be treated as such. This is just more of the things going on around the world.
