Hello.
I had a couple of hours litter picking this afternoon on the Industrial Estate. I was wearing too many layers, and it was hot hot hot. Had to take my jumper off. That's one bag filled. Time for a break, a banana and a drink of water.
I found a couple of carrier bags, so I filled them as well. This is one end of a long road which goes through the estate. It's quite busy with trucks going in and out of the factories and warehouses. There's still a lot more litter to pick. I'll go back when I have time to do it.
I dropped my pickings off at my usual spot next to the litter bin at the big pond. I see that the Council has picked up the bags I put there on Monday.
This job suits me. I can go when I like, where I like, and for how long I like. I can fill one bag, or several, depending how long I want to do it for. I can stop when I am fed up, and I don't have to pick at the same spot. I can move around doing a bit here and a bit there. Other people are happier to do it in groups. I am happier working alone. It's becoming a popular pastime now. I wonder if there will come a time when the volunteer pickers will pick up more litter than what is dropped. I think that's a long way off, but it would be good if at least people notice that more places are free of litter. Thanks for popping in. Toodle pip. ilona
Hopefully cleaner verges will mean less litter being deposited there in the future. Litter attracts litter.
ReplyDeleteIt's true, litter does attract litter. The grass on verges is growing at the moment which provides a screen to hide the litter tossed out of car windows. It's not worth walking a long way with my trolley just to pick up a few pieces. That will come later when the mowers have done their job. For now I will endeavour to tidy the worst grot spots I can find. Piles of litter concentrated in smaller spaces which I can pick with very little effort. I might not be able to clear it completely but as is my experience in anything I do, I chip away at it bit by bit.
DeleteIt would be wonderful if the volunteers out worked the litter bugs (that may be an American term lol). Sounds like your community is hard at work.
ReplyDeleteTo beat the litter bugs I reckon the pickers have to be consistent and dedicated. They have to be in it for the long haul. It's very disconcerting to find new litter in an area that has been cleared before. One has to adopt the mantra of, 'I will not be beaten'. I am good at that.
DeleteHow on earth can people drop so much litter? Can't they just take it home with them?
