Teeth and chips and cars

Good evening. I went to the dentist today. I have a broken tooth which needs a repair. It was filled about a year go, or eighteen months ago, could have been two years ago, but the filling dropped out. I thought at the time that it might not last. The very young dentist who did the job took ages over it. I wondered if she was qualified because she looked so young, about twelve I thought.

I decided to call in at the dentist rather than ring up about it. They are in Brigg, it's a Bupa dentist. I have been going there for 20 years. They used to be privately owned, then they changed to Bupa. I thought they might have called me in for a checkup before now, or maybe I should have rung and asked for a checkup appointment.

I have always been an NHS patient. The lady on reception said they don't have any appointments because they are short of dentists. People have left and they haven't been able to replace them. She checked my details on the computer and said they will call me if they have an appointment.

They also do private work so I asked how much it would cost. I don't want to go on a monthly plan and would rather pay as and when I needed work doing. She said that is possible. So miraculously she found me an appointment for next month for a check up. Hopefully they can do the repair then. It will have to be done so I will have to pay whatever it costs.

It was market day in Brigg. Most of the stalls were packing away to leave, except for the cheese van. All he has to do is close the door and drive off when there are no more customers. I saw that he had truckles for sale. I couldn't resist buying one, even though I have some in my fridge. Can't resist the caramelised onion variety.

I was hungry so I had a portion of chips, wrapped up to take away and eat in my car. Only £3, chuffin heck. I only ate half, it was a big portion. Then I made a coffee, I still have some of the camping gear in the car.

There is a big Garden Centre on the outskirts of Brigg, so I went there for a look around. I was going to go for a walk but it was too cold. The Garden centre is massive. I didn't buy anything.

So that was my afternoon out. I put some of the chips in a bowl with some of the stew I made last night, and microwaved it. There is still some left for tomorrow. Not going to waste the chips at that price. Chips are my once a year treat.

I am browsing the internet looking at cars. I am quite taken by the Ford Tourneo. There are three of them in a local garage. They don't quite meet my specification though. Must be petrol, manual gear change, and privacy glass. I might go and look at them tomorrow, just to check the size. Can I fit a bed in it.

Thanks for popping in. Toodle pip.   ilona

  1. Hi ilona, sounds like another full day. The cost of purchasing food is quite expensive, I don’t know how people do it so often. Oh how amazing she miraculously found an appointment 🙄. Sorry you will have to pay the extra but glad you are able to afford it. Years of watching your money pays off again.
I was wanting to ask have you noticed a huge increase in the cost of eggs? Here in the US the cost for one dozen eggs is $4.59 I think that is £3.76. Supposedly due to bird flu causing a shortage along with heavy demand and new laws. No longer are eggs a frugal dietary staple.
Exciting about the new car search.

    1. I have noticed a slight increase in the price of eggs. Surprisingly I have started buying extra large eggs, rather than large. No point in me getting medium size because they are cheaper, I would end up eating two at a time, which then makes a box of six last for three meals. I expect it's only a matter of time before they start mass slaughtering of our birds here. There is no end to this evil.

  2. hello, Ford Tourneo is great, one of our driver has it, I went out to check and it's perfect for camping. Perfect. It'll be my and my partner next car, for sure. For us il will be diesel ( unlead? is correct in english?) or, if it does exist Hybrid with GPL (gas). it contains the costs and it's always a plus. anyway...good luck for your next car - federica

    1. Hello federica. I have mostly had diesel cars in the past, because they have needed less maintenance. Also good MPG. A diesel is better for long journeys because they need a blast down the motorway every so often. Since retiring I don't do as many miles, and a lot are local, so I changed to petrol. I like the higher roof and square back of the Tourneo.

  3. I’ve recently bought a Skoda Superb estate. Plenty of room in the back. I also looked at a VW caddy van as I felt this would be more practical for camping and sleeping in. Unfortunately I found reversing with no back window very difficult although maybe I should have persevered or sourced acan with windows in the back doors. I’ve bought a diesel because of the economy. Yes I know diesel is being phased out but I’d imagine with the current push to get older drivers off the roads I only have a few more driving years anyway. For anything about cars the YouTuber Geoff Buys Cars is a good one to watch - a very awake man as well. Good luck with the dental work.

    1. Hello. I checked out the Skoda estates when I last changed my car. They have come on leaps and bounds from the old days when they were regarded as a cheap budget car. Now they are smart and swish. I like the look of the Caddy, but I am not sure it is long enough for my needs. Also VW's are more expensive, but they seem to hold their value longer. Diesel fuel is more expensive than petrol now, but if you are doing the mileage it will be a better cost effective choice. I am happy with no back windows and always reverse on mirrors. You would get used to it with practice.

    2. We've recently changed from a Citroen C4 Picasso to a C5 Aircross, both diesel. The Aircross has all the now mandatory bells and whistles that make driving much more distracting than in the Picasso, and we are getting clobbered by much higher VED - the Picasso was just under the CO2 emissions level to be zero rated. despite the Aircross having a reversing camera, I find it easier to reverse with the mirrors, the camera gets really mucky in wet weather so the picture is pretty much useless. I guess that using mirrors will be second nature to you from truck driving.

    3. Thanks Will for your Citroen review. It's not a make I have considered. I know what you mean by bells and whistles. I have had several Fords and each time I get a newer model it comes with gadgets I will never use. My Focus has a screen and sat nav. I don't need that. I just leave the map on the screen so I can check I am going in the right direction and to confirm I am where I think I am. My radio is permanently set on Radio 4. If there is a boring programme on I switch it off. I have no idea what Blue Tooth is.

Debi from Leicester.Hello Ilona.Good luck with the dental work.I know its very expensive these days cause my Daughter went a few months back and it cost her a lot of money.Although I have noticed in your videos that you have lovely teeth!I hope you find a car that you are looking for.Its important to get exactly what suits your needs cause its a big investment when you need it for car camping as well.We wont have a car from the end of this month because of hubbys alzheimers disease they wont renew his licence. So its back to walking every where or using our bus pass.Never mind though cause the extra walking will do us good....Im trying to stay positive about it all!.xx

  5. Re dentist, I have a scale and clean by a dental therapist every six months. Ive been doing this for years and haven’t needed any dental work for a long time. Medicare in Australia doesn't cover dental, so some go to the dental hospital and let a learner work on them for free. Or you can join a health fund which will pay for major dental. I regard the cleans as insurance.. still have all my own teeth. Good luck with it Ilona!

  8. I would recomment a Toyota, I know it's totally unpatriotic, but I've been driving the same Corolla estate for 20 years and it keeps going. You can sleep in it and have so much storing space (skies etc.) and its not so expensive.
So sorry about those haters / mad hatters around, don't let them get to you!

    1. I will find out how much one checkup and one filling costs.
I was chatting to a woman in Aldi last week, she had a scarf over her face. When it slipped down I saw why. Her teeth, what there was left of them, were black and broken. I felt sorry for her, perhaps she can't afford to get some treatment.
