Good evening.
My delicious and filling lunch was a vegetable omelette. Mushrooms, cauliflower, broccoli and carrots, with grated cheese. Then I set off for a walk, taking my litter picking stick and a bag with me.
Off I went again along the road and by the time I got to the park I had another full bag. There are bins behind the cafe so I emptied the litter into one.
Along the road, behind a hedge, I found this massive fly tip. They have used this spot before. it is mostly cannabis plants and root balls. They come along under the cover of darkness. Those black bags are heavy, so I suspect they use a small tipper truck. The farmer will have to get rid of it because it is on private land.
I filled my bag a third time from the grass verges and had to leave some of it behind. I need to make another walk along there.
Fly tipping and littering are endemic. People have no social conscious, they don't care. We are turning into a third world country. Very sad.
Now I'm going to cuddle Mayze. Enjoy your Sunday. Toodle pip. ilona
Hi Ilona, I still read your blog every day, keep it up. I have recently got my pick-up stick, hi-vis jacket and bags and am looking forward to joining the ranks of litter pickers. Best wishes, Colin in Kent
ReplyDeleteWell done Colin. This is an activity that you can do alone, or part of a group. Either way it's getting outside in the fresh air that is the bonus. When you first start you will notice that people's reactions to seeing you will vary. Some will ignore you and carry on with their daily tasks. Some will stop and thank you, which is nice to be appreciated. Sometimes they want to chat. I don't always wear my yellow vest, I should do. On a busy roadside always wear it, so you don't get killed by crazy drivers, and it makes you look kind of official. Go out when you have time, but don't feel you have it. It is voluntary so you decide. Put a smile on your face and you will meet some positive people.
DeleteHi Ilona ... despite the fact that we are promoted as a "clean green country" here in New Zealand, there is still fly tipping here. There is a bad spot at the side of my road where the town meets the country. The Council came & took bags of rubbish away, went through them & found envelopes with addresses on it & some people were prosecuted, according to our local newspaper. Of course, it would be easy to Not put envelopes in it & have nothing to trace back to.
ReplyDeleteI just love your new Header picture Ilona - it reminds me that not far from where I live a man has built a tree church in his back yard. If you googled Tree Church, Ohaupo, New Zealand I am sure you could see it - I have featured it on my blog in the past. It is such a wonderful peaceful place to visit. Have a great weekend Ilona. (sorry to prattle on there a bit)
Hello Julie. You can prattle here, I give you permission. I took the header picture a few years ago while walking in Lincolnshire. I immediately felt at home there. The opening in the distance should be in the centre of the picture. I have had to crop it a bit to fit it into the blog.
DeleteIt does seem like litter picking is a constant job. I wonder if people have ever been taught that it’s wrong and disrespectful?!?! I would hate to see the places they live.
ReplyDeleteI too love your new header. It looks very calming and soothing. I will have to look up the place Julie mentioned, it sounds lovely.
Good thing you had that delicious meal before going out. Sounds like you worked it off. Take care. In the middle of snow/sleet storm here in the US. Supposed to last all weekend and into Monday morning. So glad to be retired and not have to worry about getting into work on Monday. Ahhh freedom is wonderful.
It is never ending, Tammy. I'm afraid standards are dropping as far as attractive places to visit are concerned. Laziness, entitlement, I can do whatever I like, has diminished a lot of pride in the outdoors, even around their own doorsteps. Wrap up warm in your snowy US. We have escaped that up to now in North Lincolnshire.
