Shopping haul and a job to do.

Hello. It's looking like it might be a busy day, so I'll fire this one off super quick. Last minute decision last night, go for the yellow stickers at Tesco. A good haul, all with 75% off. The man with the ticket machine said not so many people come for them now, it used to be 90% off. This saving is fine by me. Other foodstuffs were bought as well. No need to go again for another couple or three weeks.
My friends in the next street are downsizing, moving up north, and they need to get the house cleared. There are four single bed bases to get rid of, no one wants them, not even charity shops. The council will take weeks to come and pick them up and they don't want them lying around in the front garden. The plan is that I  dismantle them and salvage any timber that might be useful for other projects and take the debris to the tip.

Must get on with the job. Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

  1. well done on the food that's brill, must go and have a look myself sometime soon. Re the beds have you tried freecycle, local homeless charities, streetlife free to good home, I know people are funny re mattresses but its shame for the carcasses. Regarding your post about the sponges, in homebargains I think you can get a pack of three sponges, just chop two different colours up perhaps. have a good day. Julie T

    1. My friends are elderly and want to get rid of them quickly, and wouldn't want the bother of freecycle etc, people coming to the house.

  2. Hope that dissecting the beds went ok; may do you a good turn and I'd expect the council to charge for removal - goodness how much. Your comment about the friends moving 'up north' made me think; I'm a Midlander so your neck of the woods and up to the Orkneys is 'up north' to us. Just a comment on our geography. Amanda

    1. Hi. Our council will do four items (free) collections in a year. My friends don't want four bed carcasses on their front garden for a week or more, waiting for collection.

The 'up north' they are moving to is Scotland.

  3. you are lucky to get such bargains in your supermarkets. My local co-op hardly reduces anything and it's not worth wearing out your shoes looking. Even bigger supermarkets in town have very little to offer and the bus fares to get there are nearly a fiver.

    1. Hi. Difficult to go yellow sticker shopping if you haven't a car.

  4. I would kill for some bed bases to make some new strawberry cages, but such is life...lol

  5. Bits of wood are always good to stash away. Hope they are not the sort of beds with thick yellow varnish as that can restrict re use sometimes.

  6. Amazing haul Ilona! Beds could become raised beds? Will look forward to seeing what you do with them.

  7. I wonder if there's a British Heart Foundation furniture shop or Emmaus charity shop in your area. Emmaus in particular take old furniture and refurb it to sell on or give to people who can't afford to furnish their homes. If not then I'm sure you'll make good use of the wood, Ilona.

    1. Hi. British Heart Foundation had a look at what they wanted to get rid of. They rejected most of it, and the times they specified for collection weren't convenient for my friends.

  8. I used to have a coop that used to massively reduce some of their stuff - salad and bread ie down to just pennies. I've moved now and when I am in the area, I mooch in to Tesco - yes, they have reduced areas but their prices are still exhorbitant and don't represent good value at all. It is cheaper to get food when my friend is working in Spalding and can go to the market and a little fruit and veg shop. I think it is up to individual managers at these supermarkets to settle on the prices - some are more mercenary than others. Natalie

  9. Round here where I live we have a company called Refurb. t's run bu volunteers and they also do training too. They take away your donated furniture fix it up and then sell it for a very small fee to people who have been referred by the social or council. Anything like that in your area?

  10. It's very kind of you to help your elderly friends with what sounds like a strenuous job. I can't picture the bed frame. I'm thinking it must be the slats that link the headboard and footboard. Most bed frames that I've seen here are metal and easily come apart.

  12. Hi there! Ive just discovered your blog through a news website. I wonder if you have any Christmas tips? I'm a 27yrs young mum of two boys aged 5 and 7. I usually go to the in laws for Xmas dinner but I'm thinking I should be cooking dinner for my own family now..

I'd love to hear back from you. Focusing on Christmas and saving money is helping me through a depressive time I'm going through at the moment.

    1. Hi Rebecca. Welcome to Tightwad Towers. I would love to help you with money saving tips for Christmas, but unfortunately I don't do Christmas at all. No presents, no cards, no extra food. I usually get invited out to relatives.

What I will do is put a call out to my readers in Sunday's blog post, asking for all their money saving tips. Maybe there will be some ideas for you there. My one idea is to buy your presents from charity shops, or if you are handy with knitting or sewing, hand made is quite popular.
