Looking back at 20 years ago

For most of my life I have been writing letters to magazines and newspapers, about any subject I found interesting, and to put my point of view across. I enjoyed writing at school and wrote lots of stories for my own amusement. I remember the teacher telling us to write about a very important person. Most of my class mates wrote about someone famous, I wrote about my mum.

I have diaries dating back to 1963, and continued filling them out for many more years. I tried my hand at writing short stories and articles for women's magazines, some of which were published and I received a small payment, some were rejected for one reason or another. There are lots of people out there doing the same thing, so I think they were swamped with writings and only had room in their publication for a few of them.

In this video I am reading a letter I wrote to a local newspaper, over twenty years ago.

Wow, it's windy outside. I've just done a walk and litter pick while I was waiting for this to upload onto yoootooob. Now I'm going to get a late lunch. Toodle pip.  ilona

  1. As valid a statement as it was in the 90's!
I hope your kitty is ok :)

    1. Mayze kitty is fine. She spends a lot of time cleaning herself, it's inevitable that there will be a hairball appearing now and again. Puking it up is better than it getting stuck in her gullet.

  2. Well said then, and still relevant today.

    1. Yes, even though I wonder if a few individuals trying to live simply make any difference, we still have to carry on with it.

  3. Your letter makes interesting reading and as you say,it is just the same situation 20 odd years on.I think it all boils down to that quite a lot of people just cant be bothered!.Too much trouble to wash tins out...easier to throw them in the bin.Not using food up...easier to throw it in the bin.ect,ect.I could never go back to that way of life but it seems that alot are happy to do so without even trying to change one thing that could help!.I tell my grandchildren that at least I tried to make every effort to make this a better place for them...Hope that you managed to clean the cat sick up without heaving your self.Sometimes I have this happen maybe 3 or 4 times a day!.When I get up in the morning I walk downstairs very carefully because I never know what I could step on,lol. One of mt cats,Storm, will quite happily eat his food and puke it back up into the food bowl..so having 5 cats I have to keep a close eye on the situation!!.Its a good job that we love them to bits!.Ive just remembered that when I was about 12 I wrote a letter to Jackie magazine and it got published.I was well chuffed!,xx

    1. The cat sick was just a hairball, so not too bad. She is always grooming herself.

  4. You were ahead of your time Ilona! Recycling waste is just second nature now and really - they make it very easy for us here in Toronto. I live in a building with dumpsters out back - one for garbage, one for recycling (no need to sort) and one for organic waste (we get a separate container from the city for this waste). Even food courts & coffee shops have their garbage containers divide up by what you can add - it's quite amusing watching everyone studying the notes and diagrams to try and ensure they are using the correct one! Just takes a little bit of effort.

    1. I don't know why people find it so difficult.

  5. I recycle and get irritated in my city that not everyone does. Good grief, we have curbside recycling so there is no excuse. Hope kitty cat feels better. Slugger had a bad tummy for a few days so I was doing the cleanup also. Tried to convince him it was much better to throw up on the tile rather than the carpet. Today when I got the mail I couldn’t figure out what one package was. Why was I getting something from overseas? It was the bag from guessing the number of buttons. THANK YOU! I had forgotten about it so it was a very pleasant surprise.

    1. Wow, that parcel has taken a long time to find you.

  6. The other day I thought of you as I was diluting the whole new container of dishsoap with water (half-and-half)-- I learned that from you!
(Funny, but it's easier to dilute the whole batch than to squeeze just a tiny drop of soap into the dishwater... )

I've only been reading you a short time but I've read some of your old posts too.
Thanks for all your tips: I'm sure you've helped a lot of people figure out easier ways to recycle, etc.

    1. Hi, Good on you for working that out to suit yourself. Most cleaning liquids are very concentrated, they work just as well diluted.

  7. I get very irritated with yobs of all ages throwing takeaway containers of burgers and coleslaw and french fries from well known fast food "resturants" and takeaway cups of coffee outside my house.Smashed bottles of budweiser all over the pavement, fag packets, drug packets etc.I do pick up some but draw the line at mucky loo paper and snotty? tissue.I have collected drug packets and handed them to local police who aren't bothered.Another thing I've collected littered outside my house and local park are a vast amount of tiny silver coloured gas canisters which are used to get a high from by inhaling- my local police aren't interested and said I was to just put them in my bin unless they are in my garden x

    1. We get those gas cannisters littered around our playing field, and in the woods where the youngsters gather.
