Last check in for the Walking Group.

Good morning. And a Happy New Year to everyone. I didn't manage to stay awake until midnight. Bed was calling me at 10.30pm. I was however woken up just after twelve by the fireworks in the next street. The loud bangs did not bother me too much as they were only distant cracks to my deaf ear. I soon dropped off to sleep again.

So, this is the last check in for the International Walking Group for 2022. I hope you are all feeling fit and well after your year long slog around your area. Be proud of yourselves that you have completed your challenge.
I have already revealed that I finished my challenge on Thursday. Now it's your turn. Leave a comment with an update of your final mileage. How did you fare, was it easy peasy or a struggle to keep motivated? Have you had enough or are you raring to go again in 2023? This will be the last check in ever. I don't need to hold your hand any longer. You are capable of deciding for yourself whether you will go for the full Monty again or not. I have badgered you, and I have kicked your arse. The benefits of exercise are well known. All I am going to say is do it for yourself.
I am still considering what I am going to do next. I will not stop walking, that's a fact. I will be recording my mileage on my brand spanking new calendar. I want to leave time for other adventures so I might not go for the full 1000. It depends on what other ideas I come up with. I like to be flexible, and not stick to a rigid timetable. One must grab opportunities when they arrive.
I saw this hippy campervan on Thursday, it was parked near the Marina. I think with a paint job like that it is highly unlikely that it will be stolen.
Anyway, I must crack on. Thanks for popping in. Toodle pip.   ilona

  1. Hi Ilona, Happy new year! I did 35 miles in December, so was at 494 for the year. I wasn’t aiming for 1,000, rather I did as much walking as I could with my senior dog and various health issues. I am happy with the total, and was so happy to be part of this walking challenge. Thank you for the past few years, it was lovely to be a part of a group…some days as I was trudging along, I thought of the various folks in different parts of the world, and it made me smile. All the best for a good year, Hilogene in Az

    2. Happy New Year Hilogene. It made me happy too thinking of us all trudging along trying to get the miles in.

  2. Happy New Year! I did 80 miles in December making a grand total of 934. Disappointed to not reach 1000 miles this year but having Covid twice put me out of action for 6 or 7 weeks so couldn't be helped. Thanks for motivating and inspiring us and running the walking club the last few years. I shall miss it.

    1. Hello Nick. Don't be disappointed, you did amazingly well. A good reason for carrying on. Don't forget, you are doing it for your own health and well being. I might set up a separate page for this so people can check in at anytime. That would spread the workload out for me over the whole year. Watch this space.

    1. Hello Vix. Glad you like it. What prompted me to send you the link was the cost of the B & B they stayed in. I remember you saying how cheap it was there. Best wishes.

  4. A combination of bad weather and surgery limited my December total to 58 miles. However, I was hoping to hit 1,500 miles for the year, and I ended up surpassing that for a total of 1,505 miles. Thank you for the past several years. It was always fun to see other walkers from around the world.

  8. Ilona, I've enjoyed being part of the walking group for the past two years. Your post on 28 December was just the motivation and inspiration I need to set a goal for the coming year and continue tracking my walking miles.
For December, I clocked 66 miles for a total of 876 for the year.
    Happy New Year!

  9. Happy New Year…came in 1,665 kms. I have started to listen to audio books as I walk which is wonderful. For 2023 my target is 1,800 km and 180 books. Day 1 and I didn’t go for a walk today but did read 2 books.

    1. Hello Anonymous. Audio books are fab. I used to listen to them while driving. That's a high target you have set yourself, go for it. It's good to have something to aim for. The sense of achievement at the end will be exciting. Best wishes.

  10. Happy New Year Ilona! It was great fun to belong to a group, but you are right, we should be able to motivate us on our own. I didn´t quite reach 1000 miles, but as we use kilometers here, I am far over 1000. I surely will continue walking, it has really benefitted my health, and of course I will continue reading your blog every day.

    1. Hello Hilde. Well done. You are still part of our group here, even if there is no requirement to check in monthly with your numbers. I want to hear of any walking achievements as we go through 2023. You can become a mentor to others. Let us know how you get on. Best wishes.

  11. Happy New Year Ilona and fellow walkers. I managed 2111 kilometers , I didn't have a target really, just wanted to see how much I did with daily walks and incidental walking like parking the car away from where I was going and just walking to do everything. I also, have enjoyed being part of this walking group and fully intend to keep going on the same, love it. Joy Central Victoria Australia

  12. Good morning, Ilona and fellow walkers. 2022 was a great year for walking. Unfortunately, the cold snap mid-December didn't allow for several days of walking. When I don't get my daily walk, I feel sluggish. I logged in 95 miles for December bringing my yearly total to 995 miles. I didn't have a yearly goal and am pleased with my accomplishment. I help friends at the local quilt shop so spent at least 30 days on the road last year setting up for quilt shows. During shows I didn't get my long-distance walks in. This year they have decided to cut back significantly so I anticipate many more days at home which translates to many more walking days.

  13. Happy New Year Ilona.
Thank you for inspiring us all to have a goat regular walking for the last seven years.
I started with the first group and have just drawn up our diary for this year;Year 8.
Last year’s total was 750 miles so well down on most years for a variety of reasons.
Now we have a fresh start so hope to improve on that total but we are now 77 so I suppose we should expect to do a little less!
Take care. I shall be interested to read how your own walking programme develops.

    1. Hello Sue. Wonderful news that you are going to carry on. I can't imagine not walking now. If you have done it all this time, and are now 77 years old, then I have to do a few more years. Come the end of January there is a chance I won't have cut back by very much, ha ha.

  14. Hi Ilona, I read your blog but don't comment... partially because I disagree with some of your views. But I don't feel I have to tell you that! I do enjoy other parts though, so that's good. 😃 I would like to say that for those who want to try to do 1000 miles, but need extra support or encouragement, there is the Country Walking Facebook group. You don't have to subscribe to the magazine, or pay to join the group ( although you can pay for a medal if you want to) You can just join the FB group and post what you have done. You probably don't need it, being the independent woman you are, but you might want to check it out to see if it's something you want to recommend to your " walking group"
