What a woppaaa.

Excitement in the village yesterday. This turned up at 8am. It had two escort vans with it. Total weight 80 tonnes. It was parked up on the road for over four hours while it waited for the police to come and assist at the end of it's  journey. It had been travelling from Devon for two days. The police eventually arrived to move some parked cars so that the load could be transported to it's delivery point.
I got this information from the driver of course. Me being nosey and wanting any excuse to talk trucks.
The area around here is covered by weight limits. Trucks must come and go along the designated routes. Most of the drivers have been forewarned of the legal route they must take. This one got it right and was in the right place.

I hung around waiting to see what happened next. The two police people were unable to clear the way of parked cars. They left to do another job elsewhere. The driver was informed that other police people would be along sometime during the afternoon. These types of delays are normal when doing heavy haulage. There are many hours of hanging around waiting for other people to get organised.
I sat outside the pub chatting to friends. It looked like nothing was going to move just yet. When I went round the corner to check on it I was amazed to see it had disappeared. Where to I do not know. It would have had to go back the same way it came. So my opportunity to take some more amazing photo's as it carefully inched it's way round some bends, was lost. How disappointing.
You have to agree it's a very photogenic outfit. Great paint job on the Scania tractor unit.
Excitement over. I wonder if it will come back and have another attempt at the final part of the journey. I doubt it. The paperwork for these types of loads takes a while to be processed. They have to move on the dates specified on the documents.
Have a good Bank Holiday weekend. Toodle pip.   ilona

  2. Love the photos Ilona. I've always liked big lorries. Years ago when I was about 11 years old, I belonged to a club called Scammell Spotters. You had a booklet and a metal badge! Don't think kids these days would be bothered. I also love Eddie Stobart trucks!

    1. I remember Scammell, beasts to drive they were. Thank goodness they were phasing them out when I started driving. I joined several trucking clubs, and still have the badges and membership cards. It was said that Eddie Stobart's spotters club was so popular that it earned him more money than the actual transport side of the business.

  3. The pictures you got are amazing!! I don’t think I have ever seen a tractor trailer (lorries) of that size on the interstates here in the US. I am sure when you were driving all the delays were aggravating. The hours you had to just sit and wait…………………My family is very impressed that you drove the huge trucks. And driving a double decker bus, I would have been a nervous wreck. What fantastic experiences you have had mother. You were and still are Queen of the road. πŸ‘‘πŸ˜Š

    1. Thank you for your interest, Tammy. People often asked me if the job of heavy hauling was boring because of all the waiting around. My reply, it takes a high level of concentration to navigate all the twists and turns, squeezing it through narrow gaps, sometimes missing buildings by inches. Then the amount of knowledge required to secure the load ready for travel is never ending. Every load is different, and this can only be learnt by starting at the bottom on more simpler jobs, and working your way up to the big ones. Not everybody likes driving, but I loved it.

  4. Some great pictures and I can imagine doing heavy haulage was really interesting and varied. Do you ever wish you could return to lorry driving if only occasionally.

    1. For a long time after I finished driving at 60 I wanted to do some part time work. But after a day at Truckfest today and talking to the drivers, I no longer desire to go back. People have to love it to do the job. The latest equipment makes the job a lot easier, but with that comes extra health and safety regulations. I always said, if they could get trained chimps to do the job they would.

    1. I am just back from a day at Truckfest. Glad I chose Sunday, because I believe it was a total nightmare yesterday. People couldn't get into the ground.

  6. Saturday 4th May, did I see you negotiating onto Shobnall Road at 5:30? If not then I waved to the wrong lady😱. Fab article about the Scania truck, as you say it is a monster of some beauty. Jan in Castle Gresley

    1. You probably did. I had been to the canal boaters market. Difficult to get out, view blocked by a parked van. Burton is a nightmare for traffic it seems.

  7. JST is from just outside Ayr, on the A77

    1. Is that where JST is based, or is that where this load is now? I suspect that it could have been driven to it's next destination after the delivery failed here.
