Welsh getaway part 8

On my way home. Just up the road from Lydney on the A48 is Westbury on Severn. I saw a church and a layby so best pull in for a look. That's a fine looking spire. Needs further investigation. I came across a lady who was doing some tidying up around the graves. Always a good idea to chat with a local to ask questions and find out more. She told me about the Water Gardens next door. Ooooh, sounds good, best go there first. I'll come back to the church.
As you go in through the gate at the Water Gardens there is a viewing tower. There are tables laid out with information of the history of it all. How it came about, who it belongs to, and who is looking after it.

The pond at the far end is full of massive fish. If you stand close to the edge they come forward with mouths open looking for food.

There is a secret walled garden with seating areas to relax.

Here is some information. If you are ever down that way it's worth a couple of hours to have a look around. Here is a link to the web site.
So, back to the church next door. I hadn't realised when I first saw it that it is two separate buildings. The steeple stands on it's own and has recently been re roofed. In this photo you can see the gap between the two. I went inside the church to have a look. Some people were tidying up after a christening. Here is some more information about the Church.

Take a stroll around the Water Gardens with me.

Best press on, still a long way to go.

  1. What a pretty garden. Didn't know that was there, but then I don't often go that way. Lydney and Westbury are in the Forest of Dean - ancient mining country for iron ore, and also known for the Wild Boars in the woodland. We used to drive back home that way after going to Wotton Auctions. Churches with separate belltowers are fairly unusual. There is one at Pembridge (on my blog last week) and one at Ledbury too.
