Cherry picking around the shops.

Hello. Thank you for your tales of decluttering. I went to town today and took a bag of clothes, an atlas,  and a pair of boots to the Age Uk shop. I also had a table lamp to get rid of but they can't take electricals so I had to traipse up the High Street to the British Heart Foundation shop. They are the only shop that takes them because they have the authority to test them to PAT (Portable Appliance Testing), standards.
I took trolley to town because I had a lot of shopping to do. I had almost run out of cat food so I did the rounds of the discount stores. I picked a few things up from the Cash and Carry on the way in, cream crackers 25p, Ribena squash 60p, linseeds 30p, and a 500grm block of cheddar cheese for £2.50. I called in Aldi on the way back. Baby potatoes 59p, broccoli 37p, butter 75p, eggs 79p, multigrain loaf 85p. quiche £1.19, walnuts £1.29p.
I got some Danish Blue cheese last week from a freezer shop called Fultons, I rarely go in there. Last week the cheese was 50p, this week it had gone down to 35p. A bargain. Wilco have got 12 Felix pouched for £2.50, that's about as cheap as you can get them. I got some Gourmet Mon Petit on offer at £1.25, for Heidi, she likes that. I have never tried Wilko's own brand cat and dog food in pouches so I bought some to see if they like it. Bugsy likes Felix As Good As It Looks so I got a box of that from B & M for £3.29. The tuna was only 39p a tin so I got some of that for the kids. I like to treat them once in a while. I got Rocky's doggy treats from Home Bargains, he loves chicken jerky fillets and chicken rice dumb bells.

The credit card statement came yesterday so I paid that into the bank today. There was only one item on it, I have been curbing my spending. On checking the bank balance it's creeping back up again after the large bills for the car, and a new fridge have been paid for. It's amazing how quickly it recovers after a hammering.
I got an hours digging in today, though the weather has not been as good as yesterday. I did my walk earlier so no need to go out tonight.

I'll sign off now and have an early night. Thanks for popping in. We'll catch up soon.
Toodle pip.

  1. I been wondering/pondering...how do you translate moving 500 bricks into your getting fitter idea of walking a 1000 miles? That's some serious work and you were tired after the fact. Did it feel like 3 miles or 20 miles walking after you got done moving the bricks? And how would you take credit for it if you wanted to?

    1. Hi Judy. I don't even try and translate my normal daily activities into walking miles. I prefer to set time aside for walking. I am only counting in the times when I leave home specifically to go for a walk. People who walk in their job can count that in if they like, because if you have done a ten hour day on your feet you won't have the time or inclination to get up and do more. People can decide for themselves how they work it out.

  2. You set me off chucking out. My crafting space looks so much more useable since my clear out. The charity shops will be sending us away if we take any more :-) I discovered that my step counter isn't playing properly so I may well have walked a lot further than I thought...

    1. Cherie, I find the hardest part is to go through my crafting supplies and chuck stuff out. I know I have to do it, because there just isn't enough hours in the day to do everything I want to do.

  3. Ilona, I've been reading recently about the many deaths and illness of dogs after eating chicken jerky fillets. I haven't time right now to write all the details but if you Google "chicken jerky fillets dog deaths" you'll see it.

    1. Hi. I read something about that, but I thought it was beef jerky. I will look into it. He will be gutted if I don't buy it any more.

    2. The chicken jerky treats were from China. The most common complaints are diarrhea and vomiting, Fanconi syndrome(a kidney problem), kidney failure and death. This also included duck treats, and some fruit and vegetable treats. I didn't find anything on beef treats only rawhide chews.

A lot of folks just buy boneless-skinless chicken breast, partially freeze it and then slice very thin. They then dehydrate until very dry. I haven't seen anyone say how they store their homemade jerky treats but if it were me I would put them in the fridge.

  4. You had a productive day of gathering bargains, and of giving things away too. A nice balance.

  6. I love how much you love your little family. It makes me smile every time I read about them.

We have adored all our pets and they have lived long lives so far...well except the love bird who tried to get a drink in the toilet and drowned. I had gone to the store and one of the kids let it out to fly around, got distracted and lost track of the bird. A very sad day and a hard lesson to learn.
Current baby is a 13yr old Skye terrier my son found out running in the street when he was a puppy. We looked and advertised for an owner but no one came forward. He was a holy terror when we brought him home (i.e. Chewed several holes in our walls...don't ask me how) but has turned out to be such a little love.

    I love rescued animals!

  7. I bought 4 bottles of Ribena on clearance a few weeks ago, about $1 each. Not a bad price for the U.S. I usually manage to get ham skins for 99 cents a pound (great for seasoning beans and in quiche. That's where the smoky flavor is.) Picked up some summer sausage for 50 cents tonight. That will make some nice cheese, sausage and cracker snacks. Finally we're getting a grocery salvage store in the area again. We haven't had one since 2005 and Hurricane Katrina. Can't wait.

Love your posts and well-seasoned life.

    1. Hi. Your grocery salvage store sounds a bit like the Cash and Carry that I use. They buy up food that is close to or just past it's sell by date. Nothing wrong with it, and a cheap price.

We have started getting there own brand cat food which is about 9.50 for 48 pouches but having signed up for one of there vip cards we get vouchers through every couple of months which makes it cheaper. Our cat loves them. Just van idea no good if not near you or somewhere you pass. Xx

    1. Hi Laura. We do have a Pets at Home on the other side of town near Morrisons. I don't go that way very often as the road goes past the steelworks and often gets clogged up with traffic. I will keep that in mind though and call in when I go that way. Thanks.

  9. You sound like us with the pet food, I haven't ever worked it out but I'm sure we must spend as much if not more on the pets than we do on ourselves, and every penny is worth it.
Loving the pics of little Rocky, so pleased he got a good home in the end.

  11. Just a thought about the pet food. I never buy the package stuff apart from some kibble but I do chop up chicken drumsticks with the kitchen scissors to include bone in my dogs food. He used to suffer badly with his anal glands and was costing me a fortune at the vets. Now that I do this, because of the roughage and hard stools, he hasn't been back. I don't cook them as that makes the bones brittle and nor do I include splinters. I decided to give him some sardines too for his coat and had a great buy in big Tesco when I found a big bag of fresh sprats for 30p. Cleaned them and froze them on a tray. It works out at about 3p per day for this good protein and oils.
