Another successful shopping trip last night. It was three weeks ago when I last went. I am getting the hang of this now, get everything I need in one big shop. No going here there and everywhere, picking up a few items at each place. I'm afraid there are some shops which have lost my custom.
My £60 spend might seem a lot for one person, but there is cat food in there. My cats don't like Aldi's own food but they have offers of other makes, Whiskas and Sheba, so I get these when they are in stock.
You will see that I went through the checkout at 20.56, four minutes before they close. When I arrived there was no one in the shop, then two or three people arrived. We all spaced ourselves out. Some didn't buy very much and were soon gone. I held back and was the last one to leave.
It's nice to come down in the morning and see a full fridge. Making the sweet treats last two weeks or more by cutting things in half worked well last time. A four pack of muffins lasts eight days. I had half of one last night with a drink. I have bought a six pack of cheese and onion crisps this time. Crisps are my downfall. I could scoff the lot in one sitting, so this is going to be a hard test to make them last.I am trying to limit my cheese intake because that can run away with me. I do like the West Country Vintage Cheddar, it's so moreish. I will move it into the treat category to make it last.
I am partial to the Caramelised Onion Houmous. Dollops of it are a nice addition to a salad. To list some of the main things I bought this time. Watercress and rocket, green lentils, large eggs, bananas, spaghetti hoops, baked beans, baby beetroot, bran flakes, almond milk, seeded bread, apple juice, orange juice, rice pudding, mushrooms, broccoli, iceberg lettuce, cheese crackers, fig rolls, pasta salad, cucumber, brie cheese, Quorn nuggets, yoghurt, veggie burgers, banana milk shake.
I bought a fourpack of pear cider, but didn't need to. I have enough now to last until Christmas. I have noticed how much alcohol dehydrates me, gives me a fuzzy head, so I will be drinking a lot less of it from now on. Maybe one can every ten days or so. It's moved into the treat category, along with a cheap bottle of chardonnay. It's nice but I don't really need it.
Now for breakfast. I will have spaghetti on toast, I have a half tin I opened yesterday to have with a microwaved spud. I will put an egg on it as well.
Going shopping once every three weeks can be a bit of a challenge. It is very tempting to pop back to the shops when supplies are low on the third week, open the fridge door and there isn't a lot left. That's the time to use the tins and packets and dip into the freezer.
Not sure what I am going to do with the rest of the day, we'll see how the weather pans out. Thanks for popping in. Toodle pip. ilona
You have a great haul there Ilona!.For the last, about 10 years I have shopped like this, only I did the 8am run because my Hubby eats meat and at that time the sell that day meat was all half price.I dont even know if they still do that now since the C...d word happened upon us!.Its great to know that you are all set up with food for the next few weeks!.Im lucky that all my cats eat Aldis home brand.Well, its a chilly day here in Leicester so the winter jumpers have been pulled out, even the one I have had since I was 14!xx
ReplyDeleteI know several people who like to do an early shop. If I did that I would be constantly looking behind me to see if anyone else had arrived. Then I would feel pressure to keep up with the flow. Going later like I do is much easier, no need to hurry, I just need to be leaving at closing time. I'm sure they wouldn't hassle me to leave if I dillydallied a bit. The staff are very nice.
DeleteI find even one alcoholic drink means I don't sleep as deeply or as well. It's nice to wake up refreshed, not full of regret.
ReplyDeleteI love a good shop that you know will last a while. I too am a lover of caramelized hummus.
ReplyDeleteMy dad was a devil for Cheese the stronger the better. It stood him in good stead as he had multiple falls when elderly but never broke a bone. The Consultant put this down to the amount of cheese he had consumed over the years.
ReplyDeleteThe stronger the cheese, the less you need of it! I think £60 for 3 weeks' worth of shopping is very frugal.
ReplyDeleteHowever, NO WAY could I run my storecupboard right down like that - we currently live 10 miles from the town for shopping, and I have learned down the years that the Welsh weather takes no prisoners, soon occasion we can't get out or really don't WANT to go out if there is a yellow or amber weather warning.
Quite apart from that, I like to keep a really good storecupboard for you never know what is around the corner - look at the state of the shops when Lockdown started. Nothing to buy. A few people I know were totally caught out. Another Lockdown and then Brexit happening will put a strain on the grocery system as supermarkets no longer have big storage areas - they go from delivery to delivery.
Please could we have another coffee chat Ilona xx
ReplyDeleteOff topic Illona but I am a fan of Lady C Campbell on U-tube. Today she is alerting her followers to a report which is named the Barrington Report. It is concerning COVID and the governments' reponses to it. You would have to read it but I thought you would be interested since you expressed your opinion on COVID. I decided to append my virtual signature. Great post on shopping -- I am in the habit of making the grocery rounds once a week and gathering up or (cherry picking) all the best deals
ReplyDeleteHi Mona. I watch Lady C, she is interesting.
DeleteMorning Ilona and every one here.Well Saturday morning has come around again.Does anyone else think that the weeks just fly by?.I was given 2 small nets of tangerines and a bag of pasta yesterday.Only 2 of the tangerines were starting to go so they fed my compost.I have used the netting on them to wrap around my well worn scourers so they will make them last for another week!.Hope that you have a lovely weekend.xx
ReplyDeleteYes, time appears to go very quickly these days.
DeleteWe had Aldi when I lived in Georgia. I really liked the quality of the food I bought there and I loved the price. They are about 10% cheaper than other grocers in the area. There aren't any in the town that I'm living in right now. I do think they'd do well here.
