Domestic help wanted, must be cheap.

Hello. I do have some cleaning equipment in the cupboard under my kitchen sink, but every time I open the door a hot sweat comes over me and I go all fluttery. My brain starts to panic at the thought of actually reaching for a cloth and a bottle of whatever. I take a few deep breaths and try and focus. I say to myself, 'come on, you can do this'. I was not put on this earth to drag a Dyson around, or flick the dust off the picture rail. There's no fun in that, but today I made an effort. I have some people coming this week, so I need to tart the place up a bit.
First this mess on the table. There's allsorts of crafting bits and bobs here. I'm sure it can't be me leaving things lying around, I wonder who is doing it ;o)
The window is clean, inside and out. I have moved a lot of stuff upstairs, and put a clean cloth on the table. It's a bed sheet by the way, This is a work table which the cats jump up on to sit in the window sill, so no point in putting a posh table cloth on, it would get ruined, and I have plenty of bed sheets. The window sill cover is also a bed sheet, folded to fit.

Remember the four years of dust, well it's gone now. Imagine all the time I have saved by not dusting it every week. The mantlepiece has quite a shine on it. That will do nicely for another four years, or until I get some more visitors.

Tomorrow I have the bathroom and kitchen to clean, they won't take long as I am not quite so slovenly where food and washing is concerned. Housework does not turn me on one bit, if I could afford it I would employ a cleaner. Now that's an idea, I'll have a look at the budget to see if I could stretch to a fiver a week, ha ha. They don't cost much, do they?

Thanks for popping in. Catch you soon. Toodle pip.

  1. How about pretending that you are hiring yourself and pay yourself by the hour?
Or do a 15 min blitz, working like mad and then having the rest of the hour doing something fun before the next blitz?

  2. Life is too short to spend it doing unnecessary cleaning! Although I agree that you need to be fairly clean in the kitchen and the bathroom... Your fireplace looks lovely... the photo's and little ornaments all neat and bright. sadly I don't have much room for ornaments in this house... less to dust I guess.

  3. You should get one of those Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners from the C4 series to come round. They would probably do it for free for you xx

  4. I don't mind laundry, cooking etc but hate cleaning. I kind of keep the place tidy just so I don't have to clean if that makes sense. It looks clean but isn't :) Just don't look too close.

  5. The blitz idea is a good one. Surprising how few minutes some dreaded jobs actually take. But you have to pick up the cloth first...

  6. I set myself a time slot to do a number of jobs. It keeps me on my toes ad stops me obsessing about anything. I have OCD!

  7. You did a good job tidying and dusting. Bed sheets are very versatile, aren't they? I've used them as dust covers on sofas, curtains, etc.

  9. Every two weeks my daughter has a woman come in and clean. She charges $90 (US) but she really cleans everything! I've been there while she was cleaning and wished I could hire her even once in a while. You did a nice job with your mantle. I can see it shining in the photo. I hate to clean but I do it because I hate to have a dirty house even more. I force myself to clean. Treat yourself to something nice after you've done all that cleaning!! Go get an ice cream or a bottle of wine. You deserve it!

  12. Save the dust and spin it to make yarn, so you can knit a sweater.

  13. glad to see somebody else subscribes to the 'Quentin Crisp Theory' of household dust....what was it he said, it doesn't get any deeper after four years? That sounds about right!

  15. Glad it's not just me! Imo, people seem to be either fanatical cleaners or not at all. I'm somewhere in the middle .. like you. Trouble with cleaning is, when you think you've finished, you've got it all to do again. And there's always something more interesting you could be doing. I read a hint the other day to just do a few minutes every day: apparently, this will keep things ticking over to the point where they hardly need blitzing any more. Even as little as three to ten minutes a day will do it, so they say. Might give it a go ... !

    1. Yes, I will give it a try. The thing is, I see a job that needs doing then think about it, and think about it a bit more, then say, stuff it. I need to stop moaning and just do it.

  16. i make it a game, when I put the kettle on, whilst waiting for it to boil, I run around like a silly person to see how much I can get done. I do this throughout the day, when I need a break from the pc. If I go upstairs for something I have to have 10 mins up there making beds or something else, by the end of the day, I have completed rather a lot of stuff in very short amounts of time, it makes it less boring I find. then I go back to computing :) Julie t

  17. , I take 2 days Cleaning, grrrr I used to be so house proud having a day for doing everything especially when my children were small but years later when I found I had some illness problems I decided to get a "Lady who Does" I found what I thought was a treasure , paid her some over the odds then a few months down the line I caught her helping herself in my wallet, so now I try and do my own chores I take either Wednesdays or Fridays and whip through the bungalow with the vacuum and the steam cleaner, So far it is working for me. I say each to his own where house chores are concerned. Hope your visitors appreciate all your hard work getting the house ready for their visit Ilona ,

    1. Hello Danneka. I must make more effort to chip away at it, I leave jobs for far too long. Thanks for your comment, pity about your Lady who does, or did.
