1000 miles - finished.

Hello, This is me on my last three mile walk which takes me to the magical number of 1000 miles. Yes, I've done it, and boy does it feel good.
I was a year younger when I started, and felt pretty much ok then, and now I feel even better. It's right what they say, exercise is good for the body and the brain. 67 is just a number, I don't feel any different to when I was forty something. I want to continue feeling good so I will be carrying this on and starting again on Jan 1st 2017. I can feel the benefits, and I want to stay mobile. It would be such a shame to stop now, I will keep going.
This was my lunch yesterday, potatoes, watercress, and mushrooms. All yellow stickers.
I cooked a pan of veggie stew yesterday, ate one portion for my dinner and froze three and a small portion. It was bloomin lovely, my secret ingredient is Danish Blue Cheese.

Tonight I have cooked another pan, eaten one, and there is some to freeze.

Bugsy update. A week ago I thought he was ready to keel over and die. He was scrawny and didn't have any interest in anything. He refused all the food I offered him. He had three injections from two vet visits, they didn't seem to make any difference. A day before I was due to take him back for blood tests he suddenly became interested in food. I had removed most of it as it became dry having been out for 24 hours, and replaced it with fresh out of the pouch. He was in it like a shot scoffing like he was starving, he almost was starving. Since then he has been eating small amounts regularly. When I come down in the morning he is sitting up asking for food. It seems his appetite has returned. Sometime he is picky and refuses what I am offering, but if I poke it around the bowl with a knife, tell him how lovely it is, and hold it under his nose he usually decides he will eat it. I'm completely baffled. So it seems we have a reprieve, how long for I don't know.

Thanks for popping in. Enjoy your Sunday. We'll catch up soon.

  7. How old is Bugsy? Our 13 year old often has me tearing my hair out. Turns his nose up and then eats like there is no tomorrow and from sleeping most of 24 hours decides to fly round the house chase a ball of foil - I despair. But then I am happy he is still enjoying life. After I have decided thats it. Cats. !

  8. You are so right Ilona. Keeping mobile is the key to everything. When I was a nurse I always used to ask people in their late 90s what their secret was and without fail they said I walk every day. Good old Bugsy he's obviously got your determination! Jane xx

  9. Congrats on the 1000 miles! It's a commitment, that's for sure! We're in blizzard weather this week, so i'm not doing much other than walking the dog a bit. We've been having to carry her when her feet freeze.
    Happy news about Bugsy!

  11. Congratulations on an awesome achievement although I always knew you'd succeed. I think the NHS would be under a lot less strain if people followed your example. I can't believe how unhelthybsome people are through sheer over indulgence and not getting enough exercise. So,pleased that Bugsy has picked up and I hope his recovery continues. Kristel

  14. We had a cat that got pancreatitis at 17 years old. Vet did everything but then advised we had him "put to sleep" We asked was he in pain and he replied no, just weak and has given up. We decided to take him home and give him a few days in his own surroundings. I did him some beef tea and just syringed it in to his mouth every few hours only a few ml at a time. I was going to take him back to the vets when he ate a mouthful of tuna off a teaspoon and then great rejoicing - he peed.
He had a further 2 and a half years with us enjoying lying in the sun in summer and curling up in front of the fire with our dog in the winter.
Cats are tenacious things, so lets hope Bugsy keeps going, he reminds me so much of my cat xx

    1. Bless you for looking after your cat. I think they respond to loving care and attention. I think Bugsy felt sorry for me when I was crying in his face.

I am so happy to hear about Bugsy. Be sure he is drinking water, too. (I'm sure you are doing that.)

  16. Well done on your thousand miles Ilona, and so pleased to read about Bugsy.

Can I ask, did you fry your potatoes, they look delicious? Susan (wife of Edward)

    1. Hi. They are Tesco Crispy Potato Slices, coated in a tasty batter. Quick and easy side dish it says on the packet. I would normally not buy these at £1.50, but as they were 38p I thought it would make a nice change. A bag of potatoes is very cheap at the moment, but I am not going to slice and batter them.

  20. Congratulations on achieving 1000 miles this year! I have kept going since getting there in November, albeit at a rather pathetic rate this month! However, come 1st January 2017 and I will be more focussed and keen to get to a 1000 again. Glad to hear that Bugsy has rallied again. I agree with Susan (wife of Edward) the potatoes look delicious! 21. Yes, definitely do the challenge next year. You will feel a lot better for it.

  22. I'm glad you are feeling the benefit of regular exercise. I started regular walking after my heart attack in January as part of the cardio rehab they offered me. Nearly a year later I feel great, have lost over a stone (without dieting at all) and wouldn't think of stopping. Walking is free, full of interesting sights and easy to fit in even if you work full time like me. I think I'll join you next year and see if I can do 1000 miles in one year!

Delighted your Bugsy is picking up xx

  23. Well done Ilona, a real achievement. I can't do the walking challenge due to a bad back but, trying to be resourceful, have dusted the exercise bike in the spare room to begin on January 1st. The machine was made in Spain so I expect it is in kilometres (I think 4km equals 2.5 miles so my reckoning is to cycle 5km a day). Lovely food - thanks for the tip about Danish Blue cheese, yum. Best wishes to Bugsy. Amanda

  25. Maybe Bugsy had a stuffed up nose along with whatever else was wrong. Cats won't eat if they can't smell the food. It's always worth trying warming some wet food up very slightly for a cat that's off their food, this makes it smell stronger. Or mash it with a little warm water.

  26. I think I might fall short of my target Ilona but I am cranking up the miles this coming week with a few extra walks. Well done to you for getting there.

  28. Hi ilona, man here, ok if i join the walking challenge next year?,thank you.

  29. Glad to hear Bugsy is rallying! Will you be running the walking challenge next year? (That sounds very dodgy, but hopefully you know what I mean). I've just bought one of those cheaper versions of fitbit thingies and am horrified to find that even on my busy days I haven't got much over 5000 steps (though I think it doesn't register gently taken steps). I suppose if 10,000 steps is the target for people in the prime of life I can get away with a bit less being 65, but hope I can get more motivated if I join you - I know I'm not as fit as you to start with, so just hope to build up my exercise a bit.

  30. Wow congratulations Ilona, that's a mighty achievement. I wonder what 1000 miles would be in kilometres, will have to check and hope to join the challenge in 2017.

  31. Hello Ilona. Well done on your 1000 miles. We should be there next week which we are very proud of. We started on 25th January because it took me that long to decide I could commit to it. I'm so glad I did and that my husband joined me. As you say about yourself we are far fitter now mentally as well as physically.
Am I wrong in thinking you said you weren't recording our efforts next year?
Reading the comments here it sounds as though people are hoping you will.
I would be delighted if you did. Your blog feels like a family and you encourage everyone to meet their own targets. One thing I love about it is that you emphasise that it's not about beating anyone else but about improving our own fitness. Please do it again next year. In the meantime enjoy the holiday time. I'm sure it will be a celebration that Bugsy has perked up. Sue

  33. Congrats Ilona! That is a wonderful accomplishment. Have you plotted on a map where that 1,000 miles could've taken you? I would love to start that goal next year though it's hard to find a place to walk in winter where I live because of the lack of sidewalks and the amount of snow we usually get.

BTW, how old is Bugsy? My Ernie, who is fifteen this coming March often regurgitates his food, especially the dry kibble. He tends to eat very fast (he was also a rescue found on the streets).
