Free booze

Hello. My friend was having a sort out in her garage, my has she got some stuff in there. She found a load of booze left over from a party yonks ago. It was in a box in a long forgotten dusty corner. Her hubby was all for pouring it down the sink and recycling the bottles, until my friend stopped him and said she would ask if I wanted it first.
There was some lager beer which I have given away, bottles and cans of cider, which I will keep, and three of these Bacardi Breezers. I've never had this before so I thought worth a try, and it is free.
Looks alright, it's fizzy, smells alright, like watermelon, and it tastes alright. Guess how much out of date it is.

Only eight years out of date, ha ha.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth. Strange saying that, I think it means accept whatever is given to you. I'll let you know if I am up half the night sitting on the lavvy, ha ha.

Would you have drunk it, or chucked it? Old wine is supposed to be good, I have never tried any. What is the oldest alcoholic beverage you have drunk?

Thanks for popping in, we'll catch up soon.

  1. I bet it's OK! Some friends in the U.K. made their own wine for the first time. It was horrible- they stashed it in the garage and forgot it. About five years later they found it and tried it again - it was lovely!!! JanF

  2. I'd not have thrown it away. I think you'd be able to taste if it was 'off', but it's been sealed in so should be fine. A nice gift.

  4. Never look a gift horse in the mouth has to do with looking at a horse's teeth which never stop growing. So if someone gave you a horse it was considered rude to look in it's mouth to see how old it was.
I'd drink the breezers, they look good!

  6. I think most alcohol is pretty well preserved, I'd taste a little first and smell it. Looking at a horses teeth tells you how old it is and what state of health it is in, so not looking a gift horse in the mouth means accepting a gift graciously and not criticising the quality of it. I'm still managing my frugal living and that includes buying the occasional bottle of wine, cider or port, whatever my stock needs.

  7. I had out of date beer once, and it tasted fusty. Yuck, and it was only about a month too old. I reckon your drink is OK, you'd taste it otherwise. Karen

  8. I thought wine and beer went off after awhile. I can't say I'm an authority on the subject though as no one in our household drinks. I was gifted a 40 year old bottle of Scotch (I'm guessing Scotch is supposed to age) last Christmas that I think may end up at the office. I have been catching up with my reading of your latest posts and was shocked to read that the "troll" has resurfaced. I am so sorry that anyone would try to leave negative feedback for you. I have been recounting some of your tips and adventures to my colleagues and we all think you're wonderful! Hugs from Barbara (Canada)

  9. I'd have definitely drank it, hate to throw anything away.

  10. I think that date is the date of manufacture - that's how I read it. Not sure how long you are supposed to keep it. If it tastes ok then probably is 😉

  11. Your title caught my eye lol. Nicely matured in my mind. My husbands whisky is 20 years old! As long as no air has got into it. Also he says 40% will be ok forever?? If we don't hear from you again we know what did it. The best way to go....haha.

  12. No, I don' think that I would drink it. Wine is one thing - but even that can be affected by a constant change of temp, vibration etc. And beer - no - it goes funky after a number of months. I doubt it would make anyone ill but I don't think it would taste very good. Good luck with it.

  13. Oldest alcohol drunk was 1953 bottle of port, made in the year of Queen's coronation, it was fine. Most alcohol 'keeps' if not opened to air I'm told. The saying is quite correct, it's to do with the animal's teeth and therefore age; so if offered something for free, don't be picky and determine it's age by counting the teeth and if 'it is worth it'. 15. I think it may be OK if it tastes alright-I expect the Bacardi being a spirit will preserve it.When I saw the bottle I thought-Ooo luverly, then I remembered I no longer drink alcohol-oh dear,8 years now x

  17. Probably kept in the best conditions in the cool dark garage. What a lovely find. If it is fizzy and smells good this is a good sign. Cheers!

  20. Im never lucky enough to keep a fizzy based drink that long mine are always flat and taste yuk. Threw out a couple of Radlers last week from December and they were horrible. I guess thd chemicals has kept it fresh but then if youve never tried it maybe you dont know what it should taste like. Rae x

  22. Not a drink but definitely liquid; my brother brought a tin of Diamond Back Rattlesnake soup back from the US in the sixties, dated 1948. It tasted fine and I'm still here!

  23. I would have tried it since I also make wine. There are some very expensive wines that are decades old. What a nice friend!

  24. There have been some very expensive Napolean-era wines and spirits fairly recently opened and THOROUGHLY ENJOYED. Open yours, taste -- and ENJOY if mouth says yes.
