That's another one finished

Nearly there, cushion cover number four. The stripey squares are pale blue, the colour hasn't come out very well with the flash.

Not sure which one is my favourite now. Heidi loves her new bed.
I've had a sort out of my quilting fabrics, got rid of the tiny odd shaped pieces which has left me with this little lot. All sizes of squares and rectangles. I have an idea for a throw for the back of the sofa. I will make a start when I have finished the last cushion cover. The squares are already cut for that.
Who said this was going to be addictive, ha ha.

  1. You have been industrious! I save my scraps of fabric (along with worn out socks, undies, stockings, too thin rags etc) and cut them down into strips, using them to stuff draft dodgers, I think you Brits call them snakes.

    1. We call them draft excluders, actually. But, draft dodger is a brilliant way to call them, too.

    1. Yes Carol. I used a template and cut the squares exactly how I want them. The floral squares I'm not bothered about.

    2. What size did you make the squares? I`m thinking of making new cushion covers for our living room and wondered what a good size for those squares would be.

    3. Hi Sarina. The template I used is cut from thick cardboard, an old cat food box. It is just under four inches square. Take off the seam allowance and you end up with a three inch square. So, 6 x 6 squares gives you a piece of patchwork 18 inches square. When I stitched the cover together it reduced it to 17 inches square taking into account the seam all the way around.

  6. Your cushions look great. I must admit I have loved sewing, never thought I would as I haven't done it since school days.

  7. These are beautiful, well done. Do you use a sewing machine? I don't have one but would love to quilt. I spend a lot of time sewing but it always seems to be repairing clothes etc. Recently a friend gave me two pairs of new trousers but they were too big for me. I've spent a long time taking them in on the leg width and up on the hem. However, they are still too big on the waist, so I'll see if I can get any ideas from Youtube etc on how I can take in the waist of jeans without a sewing machine. Then I need to get started on my home made rugs. Not much time for quilting really!

    1. Hi Sue. the squares are all hand sewn, as in the quilt. The cover is machined, though you could hand sew the lot if you don't have a machine. Just takes a bit longer.

You need to put darts in a waist that is too big. Make them wider at the top narrowing down to nothing at the bottom, 5 or 6 inches long. Start at the back with two darts equal distance from the centre seam. Pin them first and try on. You might need to put two darts on each side if they are very baggy. If there are pockets at the back you will have to make the darts shorter, just to the top of the pocket, or remove the pockets altogether. If they are still baggy when you have done this put a couple of darts on the front as well. You will need a sturdy needle and some strong thread.

    2. Thanks Ilona, I will do this. They're lovely jeans and as I usually wear my sister's hand-me-downs, I'm not chucking out a brand new pair of trousers. This sounds easy enough to do. Or I could just eat more and put on weight ha ha! That wouldn't be very frugal and I hate being flabby, so the darts it is! The other pair of trousers are lined walking trousers, ideal for walking the dogs in our northern winters. Lucky me getting some new clothes.
