Today I scoffed cake

Yes today I did scoff cake, and now I'm suffering. Can't face any dinner just yet, full up with cake. We have had a baking competition in the village, all money raised goes in the pot and is distributed to local charities. People have been busy in their kitchens, not me, I wouldn't know where to start to bake a cake. Besides I don't want to get into the habit of eating cake, and I would do if I took up baking as a hobby, so best not to go there.
Everybody taking part delivered their masterpiece to the Village Hall this morning, and at 2pm the doors were opened to the public and the winners were announced. As soon as people had received their prizes, some of the cakes were auctioned off. Here is the auction taking place, hands were going up and people were dipping into their pockets. However tempting it was, I managed to control myself.
Here are a sample of the scrumptious looking cakes. There was over 40 entries, so a good response from our residents. Be prepared to drool.

Is your mouth watering yet? The cupcakes were entered by our younger residents. Children under 16.

After the auction what was left was served up with a cup of tea. Plenty for everyone for a £2 entrance fee.

I was a pig and asked for two pieces. I had one chocolate, and one orange. It was so difficult to choose just one from the whole lot. You could say my eyes were bigger than my belly. I think I have had my sugar rations for the whole of November, in one mad frenzy this afternoon, ha ha.

I think I might just be able to manage a bowl of soup shortly  :o)
Toodle pip.

  1. Aren't they lovely? What a nice fund-raiser to engage a community. I would have been tempted by the mushroom one :)
The timing is funny, because as of this morning I couldn't remember the last time I had baked a cake - probably years and years ago! - but I have one in the oven right this minute because I saw a very simple recipe for a plum cake on a blog last week, and saw plums in the market the same day. Using a springform pan I bought at a thrift shop - never had one of those before, so the whole endeavor is an experiment - fingers crossed!

  2. I am drooling, the cakes look soooooo good, I have to be careful what I have as I have diabetes and inject insulin these days but those cakes are lovely, the Mushroom one especially. Thanks for sharing Ilona.

  3. What a great local event! Those cakes look very delicious. I am a big eater of cakes, biscuits and pastries. Or I should say was a great eater. I have given up eating them too often as I was getting a middle aged spread. Really a too much junk/treat food spread. I haven't had a biscuit for over a month, which is a big change from a handful a day habit. I am now only eating cakes for special occasions. And your village event would count as a special occasion. Think I would go for the one with berries on top!

  5. What wonderful creations these cakes were! I`m not surprised you couldn`t keep off them, lol.
There must be a tremendous community spirit in your village to have people join in on such a
fabulous competition and come up with so many different cakes. It`s lovely to see that.

  6. I love cake and bake at least once a week, my neighbours have some and I freeze some in 1 portion slices. I only eat a slice once or twice a week, time was I would eat more than that in a day. It looked a lovely show, some very attractive cakes there.

  9. Ilona, I had to come back and comment again, because my plum cake is done and I had one piece still warm from the oven, and it is so yummy I cannot believe it and am very tempted to have a second piece, just to be sure. But I am trying to resist, because I don't want my entire supper to be plum cake!

  10. I'll have a slice of each, please! They all look so tempting, but I wondered why you had included a mushroom in the photos. I had to go back and have another good look before realising it was also a cake. So realistic! Was one of these the winner?

  13. Yum! I like the cake with the red roses and mini champagne bottles best, but they are all wonderful. If I had to face that table of cakes, it would be so hard to choose. Ironically, last night I made a cake. I had some bananas going bad, so I went online and found a recipe using only ingredients I had on hand. After much searching I came up with a peanut butter banana cake. Turned out pretty good, but Quinn's plum cake sounds even better. Here I was trying not to think about the cake in the kitchen...hee hee.

  15. Wow what a great way to engage your community, raise money and have a good time. Liked the childrens entries too! Agree with other posters, hope the mushroom won, its so lifelike. Unfortunately, I too have had to reduce my cake intake, I love cake but now only bake one or two a month max and hardly ever buy one out as they are so expensive. Glad you enjoyed your day, all for £2 excellent value I say. Toodles...
