A little bit more work on the bespoke summer house

Hello. I'll get on with this while I'm feeding my face, multitasking, I can chew while I type, ha ha. As you can see the roof is on. I have used the panels exactly as they were, didn't need to cut any off. There is a good overhang which is what I wanted. I had to move four of the support boards, I spaced them evenly across the top but they needed to be two for each panel with the outer ones being right on the edge. Each panel has two screws at each end holding it in place. Although it is pretty solid I might add some more. We have had a bit of wind, but I wouldn't want them to take off across the neighbours garden if it gets very blustery.
Front left corner.
I need to seal the joins with tape, that will be a job and a half, my step ladder is not high enough and my arms are not long enough. It rained this morning and I went out to inspect it. I couldn't see any leaks, but I think it still needs the tape. The rain ran off it, it has a slope.

Front right corner.

The side against the back hedge.
The floor is next. I don't have enough slabs, and the ground is not level, so a bit of jiggery pokery going on here. I need to shuffle them around. I stopped at this point, needed to eat.

And this is my no cook dinner. All gone now, scoffed the lot. Iceberg lettuce, pickled onions, grated carrot, beetroot, Wensleydale cheese with apricots, and I opened one of the big tins of mixed bean salad. I thought I might make a bean curry but then I couldn't be bothered, I might make it tomorrow.

I'll sign off now, the dawg wants a walk. We are still meeting at the crafty club tomorrow, even though it is Bank Holiday. Enjoy your day off.

  1. Great job! You will need to tape the ends of the roofing panels though - We didn't realise the tape had peeled on one of our roof panels - it's now home to a couple of mummified spiders!

  6. Would it be possible to tape from the underside, on the ceiling as it where? Just a thought...and no idea if it would be effective. Liz

    1. Hi Liz. Yes, I will do that. Another reason why I moved the support boards, they were directly underneath where two panels met.

  15. I knew you'd make a brill job of the roof and I bet with your keen powers of observation when you're out and about you'll find your missing paving slabs.

  16. I'm sure you've already thought of this but in case you haven't, for the taping, what you'll have to do is take off a couple of panels again so that you can reach the first bit of taping from the inside (is your step ladder high enough to reach the top from the inside?) and then do them one by one, replacing the two others as you go (I'm presuming that it's the inside panels you can't reach from the edge of the roof). But it's looking absolutely fabulous, what a brilliant bit of DIY!

    1. Hi Sue, I think you misunderstand what I mean by taping. I mean joining two panels together with tape to seal the join between them. I can't do them one by one, all three need to be made into one large panel.

  20. Those panels worked out so well for the roof. Great idea! I was going to suggest taping from the inside but I see someone already suggested that. Soon you will be able to enjoy the summerhouse once it's completely finished. Where did you get the idea to use the doors?

  21. We watched the tv prog recently showing Grayson Perry designing a holiday home in Essex. With all your brilliant ideas I'm sure you could do something better than him and earn thousands of pounds!!

  22. Your summer house looks better and better !
But how did you manage to put those panels on top of it? Aren't they heavy?

    1. Hi. No, not heavy, they are plastic 9 feet by 3 feet. Just cumbersome. Stand them on end close to the structure with the step ladder nearby. Lift from the ground upwards and slide them onto the roof. Climb the ladder while still lifting. Eventually the halfway point is on the edge of the roof like a see saw, push a bit more and it tips the balance.
