Walking Group check in. Five month totals

Here we go then, post number two for today. It's check in time for the International Walking Group. Five months into the year, the target was 416 if you are doing the 1000 miles challenge. So how have you done?

I have gone past that, now on 445 miles, so well on the way to the half way point of 500 at the end of June. I did five x 5 mile walks, two x 6 miles, and one x 7 miles. All the rest was 2 and 3 mile walks around the village. It all mounts up.

It's been a bit too hot to walk any distance over the last two weeks, five miles and I'm jiggered, glad to get back to the cool indoors. I've not ventured further afield to walk yet, that will come soon now that the rules are changing.

So how has everyone else been doing? Let us know, are you keeping up with it? This is your place to check in.

A picture from the archives. Looks a tad chilly there on the North Yorkshire coast.

Your turn, let's hear it from you. Toodle pip.  ilona

    1. I might be brave and go to Yorkshire soon. Should be alright as long as I avoid the tourist spots.

  2. Hi Ilona, that looks a familiar picture - no doubt looking and feeling very different today! I have managed to keep motivated and mostly walked locally again this month with just over 106 miles in May and about 513 miles so far this year. Like you, hoping to go further afield in the coming weeks. Keep going, everyone! Vicki in the East Riding

  3. We had a few days of 98F, which I think is around 37C, which was tough. I got out in the morning, then went down to the river in the late evening. My total for May was 218 miles and to date it's 691 miles. Part of this month's total should have been our 8 day walking trip in Alsace, but those plans obviously changed.

  4. I'm back walking woohoo! Short distances and only every couple of days, but gradually building my strength & confidence again. Ongoing issues with wrist not healing well but on the whole, am enjoying being back on walks. Obs targets are irrelevant for this year but 26miles completed in June - quite a good start! Happy to see that you folks are sticking with it!! Gillian

Hello Ilona: Since this month there is not so much confinement, I have been able to walk more. 101 miles. I want to get back the two months we were almost not allowed to leave the house because of the covid. Since I live in a city, I had it pretty hard. Next year I'm retiring, I'm going to a little house we have in a village, and then the mountain walks are going to be delicious. A kiss.

    2. Hola. Mucha suerte.

  6. This was a good month for walking with perfect morning temps. I logged in 118.8 miles in May which brings my annual total to 459.43 miles.
I've always enjoyed walking but in these stressful times I find walking helps clear my head.
Looking forward to seeing how everyone is doing.

  7. 60 miles for May, total of 260 miles for the year. Not as much as I had wanted to do but, better than none at all.
Everyone is doing very well. Congrats.

  8. Hi Ilona and fellow walkers, May has been a month with the most beautiful weather. I am so pleased to say I walked 153 kilometres, making my total so far 535 kilometres. More than half way my 1000 kilometre goal and June has only just started :>))
    Cheers!

    1. Nick, that's fantastic. A bit every day and the numbers continue to rise. A bit like saving pennies and finding you have a good few £'s in the bank.

  12. I was going to say I've had an average month in May, with 143 miles done, for a total of 567 for the year. Turns out, 143 was my number for April as well!! I guess I really am a creature of habit. Ha ha.

  13. Hello Ilona and other walking group members,
It turns out I tore my left knee meniscus at the end of March so my walks have dropped to less than half a mile a day, but I still walk! I can’t imagine not getting out of the house, even for a few feet. The temperatures here in the Arizona desert are moving into the awful category, lows at night 80 (26 c) highs 110 (44c). So my dog and I walk before 8 am to avoid too much sun and heat.
May year to date mileage is : 252.
Thank you Ilona for posting my data,
    Hilogene in Az.

    1. Thanks for sending your report. Look after that knee, don't want to make the damage any worse. Short walks with your dog before it gets too hot, sounds like a good plan.

  16. Hi hun, Each year I set myself a goal to join your walking group and I don't :( I really need to do it and get motivated. What got you motivated to walk? Why did you start walking? How far did you go at first and where? Hope you don't mind the questions. *hugs* Goldensunflowerx

    1. Hi. Looking after my health motivates me, my physical and mental health. I have always walked when I have the time. Working got in the way for a long time, but now since retirement I can spend as much time as I like walking. My first long walk was from Blackpool to the Humber Bridge, 137 miles in 7 days. That gave me a taste for it, I have done many more long trips since.

If you are finding excuses not to start walking you probably don't want to do it. To do the walking challenge you need to be focussed. Setting targets is a good start.

  17. Although I am not taking part in the challenge, full time work, arthritic hips etc, I managed to walk 813 miles last year (just checked my app as it has awarded me a 3 million steps medal). Keep up the good work everyone and well done!
