Doggy bag

These plastic bags which the dog food came in are very strong, and quite colourful. Seems a shame to throw them in the bin. You could make holes in the bottom and use them as planters, could even grow veg in them, or put a nice conifer in it. I decided to make a bag with this one.

Make a lining, and make two handles, insert lining and handles into bag, and put a row of stitching around the top edge to hold it in place.

Bingo, a bag. Dead simple. I have to admit this one is not perfect. The fabric is a little bit puckered in one corner, due to not getting the measurements exactly right. Never mind, it is serviceable as a small shopping bag.

  1. Plat pots would be a good idea Ilona, My posh neighbours had plants in small food sacks last year, they probably paid and arm and a leg for them so they must be trendy, they wouldn't have them otherwise. lol

  2. what a neat idea and one thing less for the landfill.

I have more reusable bags than I know what to do with, as we have to use our own bags at the grocery stores, otherwise we have to pay for plastic bags here.

  7. Ilona, nothing to do with this post, but rather with your new 'favourite photos' page (I couldn't find a way to comment there).

Ilona, those photographs are beautiful! Really really amazing. Some have stunning colours. Makes me want to go out a lot more - beautiful countryside is just waiting to be walked in!

One question - on photo 16, there is a dog in a field of green leafy vegetables - I wondered if you knew what the vegetable was?

  8. Hello Maria. It is sugar beet, not a vegetable you can eat.

  10. I love your ingenuity in recycling stuff. I bet you get a few people asking where you got it when you take it out shopping.

  11. Maybe you can convert other bags of yours or bags belonging to other people and earn a bit of cash. At least have them give you an old skirt or fabric for the lining. Sell them to make money for pet food. Very ingenious. Now, the dog food maker should pay you to advertise!

  12. Maybe you should email the dog food company and attach a photo of your bag, if you tell them you make them to raise money for cat/dog rescue, they may send you some nice new ones to work with or vouchers to buy the food cheaper so you can feed the dogs and then use lots of the bags, and then you could sell them on your fund raising stalls.

That bag is brilliant and looks so professional.

  13. Wow! We get through loads of dog food bags. Will definitely try and reuse them - you have got my imagination running overtime now. I'm going to plant loads of salad this year so these would be perfect, and I suppose if someone wanted a plain design they could turn them inside out maybe.....thanks Ilona you're a genius!
