Are you perfect?

Well are you? So perfect that you know the answers to everything. So perfect that everything you do and everything you say is just perfect. So perfect that you feel you have the authority to lecture and criticize other people on how they should be running their life.

If you are that perfect person, go and write about your perfect life on your own perfect blog, because you 'aint coming on here to pull my not so perfect life to pieces. In fact why are you bothering to even read my blog if what I do doesn't fit in with your view of what a perfect life should be.

  1. Well said! having been blogging for over ten years now, I have found there are a lot of 'perfect' blogs out there with their houses and garden and lives that wouldn't look out of place in a glossy magazines, just like fakebook! People don't like it when you don't conform to how society expects you to live your life! You and the cats enjoy the sunny weather, Jo

  2. I love people watching, even in blog land, I always pass on the fake ones, they irrate me. I love your blog and lifestyle, we try and be green as we can at home and save money as well. I don't match your lifestyle completely, but thats what makes us human, we are all different and our imperfections define us.

  8. Ilona, I'm not perfect, either, and the fact that you are, uh, a bit eccentric (as I am myself) and willing to try anything is what has been bringing me to your blog every day for 4-5 years (when I miss, I catch up). I don't mind plastic produce bags because I reuse them for freezing. The inside of my freezer looks like a recycling dump, but it works for me.

  9. Ilona, you are so interesting, vital, resourceful and creative. I love reading your blog. I think you're about as perfect as you could be.

What a shame that people don't seem to think of the big picture. From what I read on your blog, you recycle so many things, and in any case, it's hardly your fault if the supermarket sells things in plastic bags! I'm guessing you, like lots of us even reuse those!

    1. Yes, I reuse plastic bags wherever I can. It's not my fault that a lot of things are wrapped in plastic. What am I supposed to do, leave them on the shelf, they will get sold anyway.

    2. Funny you should mention leaving it on the shelf. I read a blog post yesterday about zero waste and the Canadian poster wrote, "It's apparently a THING right now to have a tantrum in the store and hand all the packaging to the cashier. I would NEVER do that. They have no control over the packaging and are just trying to make it through their minimum wage day."

I live in the western US, where most produce is sold loose. A head of lettuce might have plastic on it, and mushrooms sometimes come in plastic containers (which I reuse for seed starting), but customers generally pick the produce they want and it's up to them how they package it...if at all. I never package bell peppers, nor an onion (unless they are cheap enough that I'm buying a lot), nor a bunch of bananas, nor anything that is dry enough it isn't going to get the rest of the groceries wet.

Just yesterday, I saw someone who was packaging her produce in reusable mesh bags. I might try that.

  12. Love reading your blog and getting ideas on how to save. The 2 'perfect' people are out of touch with this world.....life isn't perfect and neither are people. They must have a very sad life and drive everyone around them crazy. You gave me advice about not snacking. Very good advice. I look forward to each meal and it does satisfy me. Have a lovely day. 14. I have got some mesh bags for veg but the supermarkets have a very limited selection that are not wrapped and we do need to eat and being veggie I like a good variety, we went to Aldi today and the potatoes were 29 p a bag so we bought 2 bags, caulis were the same so we bought 2 of them but they were of course in plastic, we have just the one pension so try to budget, needs must and people should not judge, most of us do our best and maybe that PERFECT, person would like to volunteer in a food bank for a while and then think about her comments, we may be on a budget but we donate several bags on a regular basis. Keep doing what you do, you are an inspiration and thank you for sharing, Chrissie

  16. Hi. There are alternatives to plastic packaging if you're able to manage without buying yellow stickered goods (you mentioned in a previous post that you could afford normal priced food.) We get our groceries at a farm shop a few miles away (we're in a rural area) and they don't use plastic anything. Paper bags are freely available instead. For the meat buyers (not us) they use a sort of greaseproof paper. There is very little we can't get there. They do have some unseasonal produce and we have to think do we want this despite the air miles etc. But the plastic free thing even for the unseasonal stuff is great. In the supermarkets I also didn't like the hard plastic containers that are used for ready made salads, hummous, coleslaw etc. Our beautiful earth is being treated so badly.

  17. Just carry on the way you are Ilona - most of us think you are amazing. I don't always agree with you but I always find you interesting, your artwork amazing, and you make me smile!

I was just having the discussion about plastic with a friend last night - and while each of us does the best we can - it is very difficult to avoid these days. As for those who are having a go at you - bet they aren't the ones out picking up all that litter on their daily walks that you do!

People just seem to want to complain about everything these days - it's as though they just want everyone to be as miserable as they must be. Carrying on the way you are and just hit delete when one of these "perfect people" show up!

  18. I like reading your blog, Ilona. I don't watch videos (too short attention span for that, reading is so much faster to me), I just skip those and that's it. This is your blog and you write and show just what you want. This is yours, not mine.

I read your blog for several reasons, but one very important reason is that I think you are content with your life. You do what you want to do, what you feel good and right.

I know I'm in minority because I don't feel I have the right to publicly judge someone's blogs (I might think oh dear, I wouldn't never do that - but if something I have learnt in my life it's that I can't never tell what is going to happen in my life and how I will be dealing with it).

I sort my rubbish (plastics, metals, other packakings, glass, paper, batteries, electronics etc), compost most organic waste, try to buy locally produced, try to produce as little waste as possible. I still keep my bread in plastic, because it protects the bread best. I wrap my cucumbers in plastic, because that's what keeps them edible longer than few days (I don't live near shops, so often I shop groceries once a week), I store and freeze my food in plastic containers because I'm very clumsy and glass containers don't have a long lifespan in our house.

I hope you will continue your blog and your life just like you have done before: no compromises.

  19. I am fairly new to your blog & always look forward to reading it. I have learned a lot from you & am in awe of your building your "garden house." You are wise to share your money saving ideas with your readers, & some folks are just busy bodies & have nasty opinions!! Please continue as you are doing - all of your money saving hints, cooking, art work, gardening, positive attitude, etc. are helpful to most of us. Mary Ann (GA in USA)

  21. Hi Ilon, just doing what I do every day, check your blog first, then breakfast on the verandah, its sunny and freezing this morning so it's porridge and my beanie and scarf in the sun for me. Love your blog, keep on keeping on, loved your video also, never wondered what you did with the plastic, always thought you would have some use for it. Best of wishes from Oz.

  22. It has been my experience, that folks who criticize/want to correct/think they are "better"/etc., usually are not happy folks. I try to stay away. Regardless, it does hurt when I hear/see/experience these folks. They do seem to be everywhere. Out in public,/on blogs/etc etc.. Truly, they usually are miserable sad folks. ------

I haven't been reading your posts for a few days, so have no idea what was said on your blog, but totally agree with what you posted above.

Have much appreciated your blog/information/community, and very glad to consider myself part of your "blog community". Glad you are here.

  23. Ilona, I love your authenticity. You are a wonder of optimism and energy. As so many others, I've been following you for 6 years and I look forward to your adventures. You're real and you're you. Keep on keeping on, Ilona. Haters are gonna hate. 5 words come to mind- "mind your own business, lady." Like momma used to say, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Blessings to you, Ilona!

  24. Dearest Ilona, To me you are a voice of reason and a trusted teacher of how to navigate important parts of life. I especially appreciate your ideas of recycling and the art of buying reduced items in this world of consumerism. I always learn something from your postings. Thank you for your efforts.

  25. I really enjoy reading your blog, meanqueen, and the tips that you give to people. If someone thinks that they are perfect.....they are not. Keep your head up, and just tell the one's who are trying to hate on you. " I know who I am, who are you?" I have had to use that line on a few people in my life in the past and it shuts them up fast.
