Looking up at Caernarfon Castle

Hello and Good Morning. A quickie before breakfast. I took a few snaps yesterday of Caernarfon Castle. I have never been here before and was surprised to see that it is so close to the shops, bars, and eateries. I always imagine that a castle stands high above the surrounding area, on a pedestal, but here it mingles in with every thing else.
It's impossible to get a photo of the whole thing, so here are bits of it.

Time for brekkie, see ya later.

  2. Here in Wales lots of our castles were built with their town encompassing walls to defend the townsfolk from an attack from boats at sea. Caernarfon castle is lovely, as is Beaumaris on Anglesey and Conwy Castle with the country's smallest house built against it's protective walls.

  3. We loved Caernarfon Castle when we visited a few years ago, it was one of the 'ring of steel' castles built by Edward 1st to try to make the Welsh accept his authority in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. Just a quick true story about castles: at a banquet years ago at Windsor castle (oldest lived in castle in the world and close to the runways at London airport), Prince Philip recounted a tale of someone who met him saying 'why did they build a castle so close to Heathrow airport?' Gasp. Uhmm, the castle is hundreds of years old, the airport isn't, doh! Amanda
