International Walking Group check in.

With two months of the year already gone, it's time to report in with our walking progress, or even not very good progress. For many of us this is our fourth year of the Walk 1000 Miles in One Year Challenge. In the beginning I wondered how long we might go on for, but judging by past reports it seems some of you are just as keen now as when you started. This is a good thing, because it means you are taking your health very seriously, and I'm proud of you.

The target for two months is 166 miles. I had to make an extra effort due to the shorter month, but I got there. Taking a regular three day break has two advantages, I can walk in different places, and a change of routine re charges my batteries. I did 28 miles around Harrogate area, bringing my total to 180 yesterday.

So how have you all been doing. Many of you have set your own targets, that's fine, I think it's better to have a target, not just wander aimlessly. Everyone is responsible for checking their own distances by whatever means they find works for them. I use an Ordnance Survey paper map and check my miles on bikehike.co.uk. Some people count steps and convert to miles. Do what suits you best, the aim is to walk. It should be enjoyable, but to push yourself that little bit further will enhance your sense of achievement.

So over to you. This is the place where we all get together.  ilona

  1. So pleased you had a nice few days away. The weather has been great for the last few days and I am enjoying my garden for last I had only just moved and had 3 weeks in hospital so had lost seeing most of the spring flowers so I have enjoy being out side and seeing the gardens in the village. 2. I had a slow start to the month but have managed 72.75 miles, making a total of 153.5 approx to date so should be able to catch up now the days are getting longer. Can't remember the last time I went to Spofforth Castle, probably over 50 years ago! Thanks for the photos - would have been very different if you had gone this time last year when we were all struggling through the Beast from the East on our walks! Vicki

hi Ilona, this months total is 69.5 miles. yearly total 166.5 so well on target. The incredible weather has helped, I'm usually snowed in this time of year but it's more like summer.

    1. Yes, we have been lucky with the weather. It's scary though that all that snow was one year ago. Time is flying by.

  6. So glad you were able to enjoy the sunny weather walking round Harrogate Ilona.
It is amazing that some people are still walking for the 4th year isn't it. I find I get really fidgety if I can't go out for a walk now.
Well done everyone, especially Susie for going beyond your target!
We have walked 97 miles this month. We were on holiday last week which boosted the figures a bit. Sue

    2. Mary, glad to see you keeping on. Three or four years ago, I started trying for a walk a day, of hopefully 20 minutes. Didn’t always happen at the start but it gets easier! Congratulations on your walking and checking in! This is my third year with Ilona and this group and knowing that i am part of the group helps me.

February in S. W. Ontario, Canada was awful, snow, freezing rain, bitter cold temps, needless to say the miles this month are pathetic to say the least. Walking in -32*C weather on ice and snow is almost an impossibility, so only 36 miles. Roll on Spring so I can catch up. Well done for those that did a lot better than me.

  14. Hello Ilona,
I’m not sure if my miles total post has come through to you. I sent it twice but the verification things didn’t appear - it’s done it before and then I don’t see my post. But I wanted to add my miles which are 92 for February just incase you don’t see my posts.
    Kind regards,
    Jenette

  15. Hi Ilona,
I’ve been a bit slack walking and riding this month, the excuses? The main one was the heat, I’ve never experienced heat like it, I must be getting soft😩 anyway I still did what I could and the total for the month was 51.67 making it 139.20 for the year so far. I’m going to try and do some catch up over the weekends this month. Have a lovely day, Fi

  16. Hello Ilona and all the group. I managed 88 miles in total for February. I'm happy with that for such a short month. We have very mild weather and if anything I was too hot on some walks. Not often that happens at this time of year.
I'm looking forward to seeing lots of Daffodils during my walks this coming month.
    Happy walking everybody

  17. Hello Ilona,
This month, with fantastic weather here in the Arizona desert, I did 65 miles, bringing the year to date total to 148. A bit behind but am getting more inspired as it warms up :)

Congratulation to all the walkers checking in! It is fun to see people all over the world here. Ilona, your photos were beautiful too, thank you for posting them.

  18. Hi Ilona - I am loving the accountability of checking in each month (first time participant this year). Miles for Feb were 132.2, so total to date 283.7. We definitely had a much colder Feb than normal, but having a dog who needs walking every day forces me out there whatever the weather! Looking forward to warmer days and more walking.

  19. Hello, it's Katie from Australia!
I walked 30.7kms this month. It's been very hot here and it's made getting out of the house hard. I also started a new job and I've been very tired.
    But I'll get there!

    Happy walking everyone!

  20. Hi Ilona and walkers. Great to see you all doing well. I have done well this month. My total is 295 miles to date. I am walking twice a day - 25 minutes and 30 minutes each time. So hardly anything out of the time during the day and yet so good for me. I am really enjoying it. I can walk around my village easily and safely. I can see more people doing this too. Good luck everyone.

  25. It has been a brutal winter here in NH, so I'm afraid my results for the first two months of 2019 have been negligible. We've had blizzards, gale winds, blowing sleet, dangerously cold weather that had authorities warning people to stay indoors, and a memorable stomach virus that put me out of commission for ten days. I'm glad to see the beginning of March! Spring is coming, but I'll have to work hard to make up for lost time.

  32. Total miles for Feb was 27 miles. As Patricia in Canada mentioned, the entire month was not welcoming to walking outdoors in Ont. Cold, snow, ice, wind all contributed to indoor walking. Most of those 27 miles were accomplished via a treadmill. But, as you say, the aim is to move. Thx for your encouragement. :)
