Help for Patsy

Let's start the new week with a question, can anyone answer Patsy's query?

I want to do this next year, but have had problems with mileage trackers. What kind do you use?

I don't use a tracker so I have no idea of what is available on the market. I have two walks around my village which I have checked on a web site, a 2 and a 3 mile walk. I walk the same routes almost every day, but not in the rain. If I walk elsewhere I go back to bikehike to check. It's not working for me at the moment, may be a fault at my end, so I need to find another web site which will do the same job.

So, if any walkers can offer advice to Patsy please feel free to add a comment. By the way, Patsy, don't wait till next year to start, there's no time like the present. Make a start on December 1st. You need to aim for 84 miles a month.

  1. Just use a Pedometer - very cheap. You don't need anything fancy like Fitbit etc.,

  2. I use google maps, just plot your walking route and it calculates how far it is. Don't think it works for aross country but if you stick to roads, it's very good.

I don't seem to have set mine correctly and just walk quite quickly for a while and slow down and quicken up.I have to do this really to fit in with my dogs.I try to do a steeper route just to push myself a bit.For the last 2 days I've not been walking and I feel tired,sluggish and my hips and back muscles are uncomfortable.Walking does improve my physical health for sure and my brain x

  4. Do you have a mobile with data? There are numerous apps on there. The trouble is most monitors have to gave an app too. You could use Google maps on your computer to plot your walk and see what it says. There are 3 choices at the top of the screen, walking, train and car.

    1. Oh and I forgot to say that Leslie Sansone on YouTube has timed mile walks that you can play. I love those because I can walk in my pajamas and stay dry and warm.

  5. I use a Fit Bit and it can tell the miles, the time, the date, the steps and numerous other things if you know how to use it. There are instructions on line. I just use mine as a watch and for the steps. I have also used Map My Walk which is a google play store app. I am in Ca. USA so I don't know if either of these are called something else where you are.

  6. I have Google Fit on my phone. It's a free ap and has a journal page where you can add any other forms of exercise

  8. Had one, gave it away and just walked for briskly for 20 minutes in the morning and twenty minutes in the afternoon. Felt much better less driven by the numbers and have lost 13kgs in weight, bad back improved and enjoyed it. Reporting back on Ilona's group is just magic. xx

  9. On the iPhone there is an app called Health. It has a red heart against a white background. This measures walking as long as the phone is on your person, even going round the supermarket for example. It also calculates your daily average over the week. I previously used a Fitbit, but eventually they wear out or drop off your wrist!

  10. I use AA route planner. Type in route and it shows up on a map with total mileage.

  11. Basically - don't spend/waste money on a dedicated device just to measure mileage.
    On my phone I have Viewranger (it's free) which will record mileage and route. So no need to be a happy map reader. But............ being a bit forgetful (not's not an age thing, I was born that way) I often forget to set it before I start. So, I measure the mileage using Bing maps when I get home. Bing maps can be set to Ordnance survey maps so you can easily follow footpaths or across open country.
    I have checked Viewranger against Bing and they compare well. In fact closer than other people' GPSs do when I walk with a group. Often they can show half a mile or more difference over a ten mile walk.
