New Steam Punk Assemblage.

I am mighty pleased with my first Steam Punk assemblage, it has turned out better than I thought it would. I kept adding bits until I thought there was enough. This layering lark confuses me sometimes, with any art that requires several layers to give it texture, I find it rather odd that the more you layer, things underneath get covered. I watch videos of making journals and want to yell at the screen, for goodness sake stop, you have enough.
See previous post to see how I started this. A flattish wooden box, not very deep. I painted it with a mixture of black acrylic and PVA glue. Added lace and fabric for texture. Arranged all the pieces, then used a hot glue gun to stick them down. Added more pieces twice more to fill the gaps. Then paint the whole lot again with black acrylic and PVA, watered down a bit so it would run into all the crevices.
Luckily I had some gold metallic paint, rescued from the tip when I helped clear out Aunties house. A waft over with an old brush, more like a light dusting. Now it looks like it's rusting metal which is the look I was after.
Have a closer look and see if you can recognise some of the components. The letter I is covered with tangled cotton thread.

There's plastic bits from children's toys and games. Tiny light bulb. Centre spool from a music tape.

Syringe used to measure cat's medication. Christmas cake decorations.

Butterfly was a broken plastic hair clip.

Circle is an upturned milk bottle top with a bead in the centre and small electrical parts.

Buttons and broken jewellery.

Tiny beads.

And there you have it. The mottled rusty look goes over the edges onto the sides as well. All there is left to do is cover the back and add a wire for hanging. I'm making a second one now. It's thanks to Ina's video on yooootooob for the idea.
The weather is still unpredictable today, Half an hour ago it went dark and started snowing, now it's sunshining, but still very windy. I will pop to the mobile library this afternoon in between showers.

  1. That looks amazing! I've always found Steam Punk "aficionados" to be very creative in recycling all kinds of bits & pieces to make something truly fascinating.

    1. Hi. The painting and gluing doesn't take that long, it's the placing of everything which is time consuming. Deciding on the layout, moving things around until it's right.

  10. Well done! I have seen large public statues made from life's flotsam and jetsam and it was them cast in metal, you could spend ages looking at all the everyday bits of your life.

    1. I'm not a big fan either. I like to look, some of the costumes are strange, but it's interesting.

I have been doing steam punk for awhile, and collect junk from the streets, I have made pot plant holders and jewelry boxes as gifts and the people involved loved them. I add colour to mine.using shimmer eye shadows.

  16. If you are getting into Steam Punk, did you go to their weekend in Whitby recently? There is also the Tomorrow's Ghosts Festival, which is predominantly Goth, but also welcomes Steam Punk people. You might enjoy the costumes people are wearing, and the Dark Market might also be of interest! It runs from 24th - 26th April, and I bet you would get some good photos over the weekend as well. I will be on the desk in the Pavilion (the woman with the unfeasibly pink/purple hair) if you'd like to meet me …..

    1. I didn't go to Whitby last weekend, but my friend Sue Hawkmoon did, with her needle felting stall. I have been to a Goth weekend, nearly five years ago. Here is the link to the write up. Copy and paste, can't put actual links in comments.

I will look out for you if I go again. Thanks for the reminder.

  17. Ilona, you did a fantastic job. I tried this last year and had great fun looking for bits and bobs. I used photos of my grandchildren in the background. I think using photos or old greeting cards makes a good base. I can't wait to see your next masterpiece.

    1. There are many ways to do this. They can be turned into family heirlooms and passed down the line.
