I'm off to the big city

Not long now, I'm away to the big city tomorrow. Planning my trip has been a bit daunting, there are so many places to see, so much to do. I've made loads of notes, I only hope I can fit it all in. My walking boots are clean, all the mud scraped from them and polished, they are going to clock up a few miles walking round the capital.

I am travelling light, a rucksack and my cat face shoulder bag. I wont need any dressy clothes, just practical, warm, and comfortable clothes. A waterproof jacket, sweatshirts, wooly hat, gloves, scarf, and I've bought a pair of rugby trousers with a thermal lining and big pockets.

I've looked at the location of the hostel on the street map and I am delighted to see there is a Tesco at the end of the road, so that's my food taken care of then.

Here are some of the places I have on my list to visit.
Museum of Brands
South Bank Centre
Saatchi Gallery
Tate Modern
Tate Britain
National Gallery
Tower Bridge exhibition
The Barbican
National Portrait Gallery
Bermondsey Antique Market
Westminster Abbey Museum
Harrods
Lloyds building
Royal Festival Hall
Carnaby Street
The Monument
Kensington Palace
London Eye
Royal Albert Hall
Buckingham Palace
Houses of Parliament

I might take in a show if I can find a cheap ticket by turning up an hour before the curtain rises. Hope they let me in if I am not looking very posh. I have decided not to go to the Cenotaph on Sunday, I really don't want to be squashed in with thousands of people. I'll make a few notes as I go along, if I don't I'll forget half of it. Me poor old brain can't cope with a massive influx of information, it needs a bit of help, ha ha. The hostel has computer access so I might pop back when you least expect me, otherwise I'll catch you on Friday. Toodle pip.

  5. Buy something to eat in Harrods, its worth it for the carrier bag and the cheese selection is beautiful. Harrods is just down the road fron the V & A and the Natural History museum both well worth a visit. Hope you get a clear day for the London eye, its great. I've seen We Will Rock You and Phantom of the Opera and I would go and see either again they were brill. I'm sure you will have a great time. Some of the sandwich bars reduce their prices at about 3 in the afternoon so worth watching out for.

  6. It's been a while since I ate there but Stockpot used to offer decent wholesome meals at reasonable prices (for London). You need your victuals wandering around London.

  9. Hi Ilona!
I was thinking of you yesterday in all that sunshine:)
Thinking what lovely weather your having for your trip.
Then, I was thinking of you today being in London with all the 'hype' about.
Still, hope you're having a lovely time whatever your doing.
    Take care,

  11. Hi, loving your blog and reading it all from the beginning! I'd love to know which hostel you stayed at in London because my daughter lives there and has no room to put us up, so any recommendation would be gladly received, thank you Ilona!

  12. Hi Jayne, I hope you come back to this post for my reply. Well done you for ploughing through my blog.

London has seven Youth Hostels, I stayed at Central, on Bolsover Street. It was walking distance from Kings Cross Station. They have 290 beds, the smallest rooms have four beds in them. You can book an exclusive room, or you can elect to share a dorm and take a chance on how many room mates you will get. It's a busy hostel so early booking is advisable.

To check out the other hostels go to www.yha.org.uk click on London. You can check availability online. If you find one you want to book I always ring and book on the phone, giving a credit card number. I have never had any problems doing it this way, I am not keen on putting bank or card details into my computer.

One thing with the London hostels, you are likely to get a lot of foreign visitors there, this all adds to the fun of it. One thing I would say though is always take care of your valuables. Most of the hostels have lockers in the room, you need to take a small padlock with you to lock your stuff away. Always keep money and cards, on your person, I use a body belt for this under my clothes. My email address is on the side bar here, any questions just ask. Best wishes.
