My doodling

I've still got this postcard I sent to my mum while I was on holiday in Majorca in 1972. The flamenco dancers pretty costume has been embroidered onto the printed picture on the card. I'm thinking it has been done by machine, but I'm not sure that they had the computerised equipment then. The design is far too intricate to have been stitched by hand, and if they were they would have needed hundreds of young girls to churn them out. They don't make them like this any more.

I quite like the idea of sewing directly onto card. You may remember this picture I posted a year ago from my visit to London. The artist has used a photograph of a young child, and very cleverly stitched over the top of it. I am fascinated by this.

This is my own attempt which I have been playing with today. I knew there had to be something I could do to alter the way I look, on those awfull passport type photo's. What do you think, maybe I'll do another one, different colours, different design. I like playing, ha ha.

Toodle pip.

  2. Loving the Hannibal Lecter look LOL

I remember those postcards, we had one with satin ruffles all down the dancers dress. That takes me back!

  3. Yikes Ilona, that is very scary! I suspect that the Flamenco postcard would have been stitched by a machine that had a punched card in it, just as they do in machine knitting and machine lacemaking.

I quite like the real Ilona. But, playing around with different media is fun.

  7. Blimey - your effort is a bit different from girly floral needlework! The one above looks a bit like that pin art that we did in the 1970s

  11. It reminds me of my Marjorie somebody or others' anatomy book, that shows the layers of muscle and tissues in the body LOL!
Good first attempt though! Don't go pickling any sheep or whales though, hate that 'Art' LOL!
Looks a bit like The silence of the lambs around the mouth too! LOL!

Thanks for making me smile on what has been a difficult day!

    Have a great weekend,

    Sandie xx

  12. My machine made in 1955 has cams in it that make designs. Yes, it was possible.

Your passport photo cannot be that bad. Disconcerting is exactly the word I would use. I hate that you sewed up your lips. You silenced yourself!

You have busted nose and damaged eye. That looks like what some guy in a wife-beater would have done. Wife-beater= sleeveless shirt, tshirt, the kind you see guys wearing when they are arrested for domestic abuse.
