Hippy patchwork bag made with scraps
I started this patchwork a few weeks ago, and now at last it has become a bag. It is lined, hand and machine stitched, and has long handles to hook over the shoulder.
I made the two sides separately and joined them together with blanket stitch.
Some of the pictures were taken with flash, as the light was fading.

What a gorgeous bag! I like anything out of the ordinary and a bit quirky - there definitely won't be another quite like that one!

DeleteI love your patchwork bag a brilliant idea to see and do in a rainy day. After I done just a little bit of cleaning, wrote a few cards and then worked on my baby blanket I am crocheting for my daughter who wants it for a present.

ReplyDeleteHi Tania, I was just thinking the same thing. I wondered if Ilona had hand stitched the blanket stitch or done it on the machine. Very even - and a lovely bag Ilona!
DeleteThe blanket stitch is all done by hand. I wanted to use something thicker and stronger than ordinary cotton because it has to survive being thrown and pulled about. The layers were that thick I had to use pliers to pull the needle through.

ReplyDeleteJust my sort of thing!I love bags like this,so different and no body has one identical to it.Ive got a crochet one,that i bought from a Christmas fair a few years ago and the handles were stitched on the inside on just the lining.Sadly, this year the handles are starting to rip away from the lining,,so its great that you have stitched your handles on the outside.Much more sturdy.Although,its my own fault for cramming too much in it!.Yours really is a beautiful and unique bag!,xx

I price things reasonably, probably too cheap according to my friends. I like to see people smile when they find something lovely that they can afford.
DeleteWell, that is a good "attitude", and it is very nice of you. I suspect it does give you a lift to see the joy in their faces, too. Just for an example, would it be okay for me to ask, what would you price the above patchwork/lined bag at? (just curious)
DeleteI sold this bag for £10 to one of our Crafty Club members. She is giving it to her daughter for Christmas. I'm happy with the. It would probably be on sale at a craft fair for £20 - £25.
DeleteHave you heard of 'scrap quilts' ? beautiful items can be made by piecing the tiniest of fabric scrap leftovers, much smaller than the ones you have there, it makes yours seem large ha ha,
ReplyDeleteThe technique is usually done by stitching the fabric scraps onto a backing, although not always, and the results are stunning.
Check out some Youtube channels and you'll see what I mean.

ReplyDeleteIm sure that Ilona posted some photos,quite a while back now of some quilts that were on display made with tiny pieces of material and they were stunning.I do know that one of my favourite craft pictures that Ilona made...the Beach Huts one..has tiny little flags and flowers that are sewed on to it.I would love to have the time and patience to do these things!,xx

ReplyDeleteI've made several patchwork bags and they always seem to garner the most commentary (all positive) from staff and customers at the markets I patronize. They are so colorful and fun, what's to not like?
ReplyDeleteLovely bag! I suppose if you wanted a closure ... you could put a fabric tab on the top with a button and buttonhole. That would be totally “free” given all the fabric you have along with a button.
ReplyDeleteYour video made me giggle ... as a person from across the pond, I’ve sung a song since I was a child containing the words, “sling it over your shoulder, like a continental soldier.” Every time you said you could sling your bag over your shoulder, I had to finish with, “like a continental soldier.”
Yes, there are ways of closing the top. A fabric tab with button as you say, or velcro. I just wanted it finished so I can move onto the next project.
DeleteThis is definitely an 'up-marekt' bag. Can I ask, when selecting your bits of scrap did you choose all cottons or have you got a mix of everything in the pattern?
